This video is very helpful! What if one wants to lower the toe to lower the walkway , would underpinning help to install a new toe at a lower level?

This 10-minute video explained the important concepts of retaining walls better than my college professor did. Because of that, I don't have a choice but to subscribe to your channel.

Yea that’s what always makes me question college for jobs like this. A contractor building good sized retaining walls can make in a month what a professor makes in a year plus! Lol

00:05 Retaining walls are structures used to hold earth or any other material, allowing the area above and below it to be usable. 01:30 Different Types of Retaining Walls 02:52 Different types of retaining walls and their failure modes 04:15 The resistance against sliding is mainly provided by the friction between the base slab and the soil below it. 05:31 Active pressure is the pressure actively trying to push the wall along it. 06:51 Design calculations for a granular soil wall are conservative due to the exclusion of certain pressures 08:04 The pressure diagrams for walls under soil and water loads. 09:16 Reinforcement in a cantilever retaining wall Crafted by S_FARH_N

I was really having a hard time understanding the passive pressure (and when there is a shear key). I'm always questioning why it is not included in the problems we are solving. That's the problem we are just solving without understanding the principle behind it. Found this video and can't believe that the answer was just to be conservative in the design, that's it. I can't find my courage and time to ask my professor, and I always find videos to understand the concept much deeper but had a hard time finding one. I am really thankful that I found this video. The voice over is clear (but improvements can be made), content is simple and concise. Focuses on principles first to further understand the formulas(it is really helpful for us students) and the figures/animation really solidifies it. You're still 12k+ subscribers but the value you provide is already at a higher level. Please keep making this high quality videos. This "aha" moment just filled me with so much dopamine that I wrote this much. I can't believe it. Peace out.

Hi - I summarized your video - a remarkable work. But after New Zealand 7 Richter and 2500 Retaining Walls Collapse - It is important to reinforce a Retaining Wall with Earthquake Resistivity
@StructuresExplained2 жыл бұрын
Hi Zvika, you are correct about considering earthquake forces in design of retaining walls. Many codes around the world now recommend adding the dynamic forces with the static ones.

real life on the job illustrations more understood than just a technical approach , nice but really basic without seeing the actual build & placement , passive pressure side of wall is a given & or also deadman or vertical interior wall side placement , looked through but nothing here with that , would change some of the overall material calculations & force formulas obviously...I've worked with retaining wall implemtation as an operator/laborer , loved the concpets & field applications using an engineered study for same

Hi, quick question. How do we calculate the shear on the virtual front (excluding base) and shear on front of the base? I believe this is the horizonal component of soil pressure * tan(delta) however, I am unsure how this is then calculated for an undrained case where delta/phi = 0 (as friction is not mobilised) and instead undrained cohesion is used. What would the shear on the front/back be in this case? I assume we would use the cw/c ratio, but is there a part of the formula I am missing? Thanks!
