So, to shed some light on this for you guys in case you didn't know: plastic surgery is a big deal in Korea. Like HUGE. People get surgery all the time for small and large things- they get their cheeks done, chin, nose, forehead (double-eyelid surgery is especially popular for people who want to get rid of their monolid if they have it over there too). The big thing for people is finding the right doctor over there, finding someone who is good. The complaint that you get though, is that since so many people want the same look, a lot of people come out looking very similar, and lose what some might consider their unique qualities. Some people who maybe can't afford a better surgeon will go to someone who is not as reputable, and their face will look to plastic, or just look odd, which is sad. It's a huge market over there, I love the underlying message about everyone conforming in a way in this movie, feeling the need to get surgery. It's an issue young people over there also struggle with, so it's pretty on point in the film.

Someone, I believe it was Buzzfeed, did a video where they submitted pictures of themselves to some top Korean plastic surgeons to see what they would change about them in terms of the "Korean Look" and the results were pretty crazy. They have a general aesthetic over there that they prefer with surgery for both men and women, and some of the standards are VERY different from ours in the states. You should check it out

So the ending actually demonstrates the reality of life in korea right now. You saw that the girl was actually dead on the table. I'll reveal what actually happened in a second to help everyone have a better understanding of what the ending actually meant. In Korea, it is as if everyone is starting to look identical to each other because once they get their face done, it's mostly a dramatic difference. Everyone wanting the same big eyes, small nose, etc. So with that idea in mind, the girl's life ended on that table and because everyone looks the same with their mannequin structured faces, the research administrators sent in a replacement and none of her family notices that she has been replaced.

I've always wondered how people feel afterwords? There is a new creation, but also a present death of that familiar face they've known all their life. There is a certain suffocation done...to what they don't like, but also to what is natural. Do they just callous themselves to losing the natural and in doing so, is there more damage done to the person they are inside? Although more beautiful, it must be strange to see another face in the mirror---> I say that of course via your comment "it's mostly a dramatic difference". Her doing the surgery early on in youth, that resulted in her death, rather than doing it later in life as was suggested by family, also seems to highlight the level of peer pressure.

I was just thinking how people who have missing limbs always feel for awhile that the limb is still there. In time that phantom sensation is finally gone. Perhaps the phantom sensation of the original face likewise dissipates.

This is just like that classic episode with the lady in the hospital with the bandages on who had a botched surgery, she looks in the mirror and is normal while everyone around her, their face is all distorted and twisted. The vibe i get from this is that everyone else has a "normal" face, and the two girls didn't, and they felt out of place, so they get surgery to do it. self-esteem thing. also kind of a conformity thing, I guess. The movie is trying to say something.
