STRUGGLING for OVER A WEEK to clean my house... and failing

DO THE 1 PLATE EACH THING!! Dishes have always been the biggest hurdle in my marriage, because no one wants to wash dish mountain, so we recently downgraded to 1 set of dishes per person, which includes 1 plate, 1 soup plate, 1 cereal bowl, 1 cup and 1 set of cutlery. Our lives are SO much easier now!! We end up having to wash our things before the next meal (instead of just getting another clean plate from the cupboard) and, even when the dishes pile up, there’s not that much to wash! 100% would recommend.

Eh, that's what the dishwasher is for. I only have enough plates etc for 4, but it's just me at home, but I do cook most nights and just did the dishes, and a few things that can't go in the dishwasher, and cleaned out my drip tray for the drain basket. Just waiting for the stove to cool down (drying the cast iron pan) before I clean that.

You have such a beautiful home! And I commend you on trying to figure out ways in which you and your family can maintain/clean it. Baby steps, y’all got this! I can handle having a sink full of dishes overnight but everything else has to be in its place when I go to bed for the most part anyway. For some reason when I clean and keep my house clean it feels like it lightens my cluttered mind, if that makes sense. Just a recommendation, but have you thought of maybe a kitchen rotation that includes everyone else. An overwhelming task is overwhelming because your not including everyone that contributes to the mess plus it helps them to be more mindful of keeping areas clean. I have one child but he does the kitchen 3 days a week including sweeping. He mops once a week. My husband and i do about 2 days each a week. It just makes it soooo much better when the entire family wants the house clean. Laundry too. My son washes, and dries his laundry he has set days and puts it up himself. But all this works well when you have decluttered really well my friend.

Another thing that helps me…. Making my bed and getting the dishes done are the two things that make me feel that I’ve accomplished something. If there’s dishes in the sink or my bed isn’t made the whole space feels out of sorts.. but you do what works for you and helps you. My children are grown so I don’t have the littles to pick up after anymore.

I try to clean the dishes as I make the meal. It makes the chore so much less after the meal that there is only a few dishes and utensils to wash. Not to mention getting up the next morning to a clean sink is fantastic!

i'm like you.. dishes are the bane of my existance.. busy family etc.. and i have started this.. if its a quiet night... I'm actually home for the evening not running kids.. I do do the dishes after supper... put on a pod cast and go... AND if its a busy crazy night i give myself grace and do it in the morning.. and yes even the nights i am home sometimes the pans sit and soak every night... i started this habbit in early 2024.. and can say unless i am sick- which i have been for a week... they get done at night or the next morning... 3 teens, and i understand the hording of dishes they do. I to am an at home mom.. in the trenches too.. you got this.. laundry i love doing but dishes arghh.. a sinkful doesnt bother me.. but i am trying to change.. one day at a time!!

Great video! Love, love your housecleaning videos! By the way, I try to wash dishes as I cook. But, when the food is ready, then I stop and eat. Always, all dishes not washed when I sit down to eat are washed the next morning or later. I think I should do better, but honestly, I’m not going to put any energy into changing that. You demand too much from yourself. Your house is open concept and if one area seems overwhelming then it’s all an anxiety. I have made a comment on a video I saw earlier and I apologize for it. I didn’t know your story. Just take an area of three feet and do that. You are right, don’t bite off a big piece of, just a nibble. At 67, I have had my now 21 year old grandson for the last 4 years and change, and dishes here are three times a day, bathroom is every second day, laundry every day plus the cleaning. Definitely agree with this. I do the dishes after dinner. Soak the pans in boiling hot water and soap for five minutes while I sort the others. The other thing I do is use a spatula to get all the food out of the pans while it’s still warm. Virtually no residue left. My motivation for doing the dishes is I put a pot of coffee on and while that’s doing its job I sort the pots. My reward is an after dinner coffee and treat.😊. I hate dishes 😂

P.N.N. So weird you brought up panic attacks because i have had three in the past 10 days requiring hospitalization. Never had one in my 75 years until now. Absolutely terrifying! Couldn't breathe. It took a while for the drs to figure out. I am now on anti depression drug that is working great so far. Go to the doctor Beth. Dont wait or tey to strong armyour way through like i did. Hello, I cannot go to bed without putting things away and tidying up. Each person has a responsibility to take care of before bed. Takes 5 minutes. It is so satisfying to wake up to a clean and tidy place. (I am not a clean freak, LOL but cannot stand the anxiety) Laundry gets done once a day if need be while dinner is cooking. I have a large laundry basket in the laundry room to house the dirty things and are not strewn all of the room. And, if we drop something on the floor, we pick it up right away. Just my way of living stress and anxiety free. 🥰

I understand the color for each person! BUT let me offer you another idea to no brake your no spend; don't buy new plates or a new tote just store all your regular dishes except a 4 set of everything and every day have someone in charge of keeping them clean for everyone's meals. It'll give the kids a more realistic perception of how much time and effort it takes to do the dishes and will set them up with the habit they need once they live on their own. (I also like to set timers because I always overestimate how long a task will take me and you can play the game of trying to be more efficient every time!)

Why do you hate dishes? I like the warm water, and the smell of the washing up liquid, and the satisfaction of it being done. Is there something you could change that would make it easier for you? Maybe swap your domestic dishwasher for an industrial one with the trays you can swap in etc?

In addition to limited dishes, my mother in law had a dish rack in one side of the sink for everyone to put their dirty dishes throughout the day ( hopefully rinsed but maybe not 😂). It was their only job so they did it. She kept pots and pans separate.

Our favorite thing and most routine way, is to go to alllllll the trouble of loading the dishwasher (and we do it how you do it) and then never start it and then have to pick dishes out of the dishwasher, re hand wash them and use them then at lunch, we reload and ACTUALLY wash them. Put ALL of your dirty dishes to the right of your cooker, soak the dirty things in the first sink and put the small things in the dishwasher, tidy kitchen whilst dirty big things are soaking, then do the big items, turn dishwasher on, tidy living room and dining room, empty bins then wipe down and Hoover right through, mop if needed. 💐❤
