Awww, I loved the end. :) Most sellers would have taken the higher offer, but I love how whomever you bought the cabin from wanted it to be more about handing it on to someone who they perhaps felt would appreciate it as they did than about the money. That makes the purchase all the more special, IMO.

Cabin 10 had a leaky roof. How would she repair that? Would a roofer come to that remote place and how would she fit in a heating pump for hot water? I would love a remote cabin or isolated cottage, but I would worry about leaks and other problems, which would be harder to repair in those remote places.

Hey! The most important thing to look at is the roof and windows. You can not cope with a winter with windows with only one glass. In old houses here in Sweden, there are often extra windows to put on the regular window so you get two glasses. The joints that arose when winter windows were installed were sealed with a special tape made of paper. It is still available for purchase. In between the summer window and the winter window, they used to lay in between the windows than decorated cardboard roll filled with a special batting. When the windows were screwed together, the roller was pressed between the windows so that it would be tight. Some old houses have high thresholds inside the house. It was to counteract floor drafts between the rooms. 17:05 Living in that house in the winter is not easy. You have probably already experienced that. It is difficult to maintain a temperature with electric elements without being ruined by the price of electricity. The house is built for heating with wood. Old houses are often rebuilt. What is now a living room was probably the kitchen once upon a time. One lived in the kitchen in the winter time. It was hot with heat from a wood-burning iron stove. Having water in the house on old cottages can sometimes be a problem in the winter. The water freezes to ice under the house. Often now more so you have a heating loop in the pipe from the well to the house. The pipes are usually at a depth of two meters so that the water does not should freeze when there is deep frost. In the 1980s, in some places in Sweden there was frost down to a depth of three meters. Hope the information did not scare you. When I have followed your journey when you have searched for a house, I wish I had been with you and been able to talk about what is good and bad. You are an admirable fighter and I hope you get the house in order. Ask the locals for advice. I do not know where in Sweden you are but most of them speak fairly good English.

Thanks for all the info!! I have survived the colder temperatures so far, so that is good :). Definitely learning a lot of things now that you could've told me before! But that's okay, all part of the journey. Using the fireplaces would indeed be much better but they are still in an awful state and need lots more fixing. I do have a second pair of windows but still need to put them in front of the others... I have actually been looking for that tape. Do you know what it is called (in Swedish?) I've been looking in Biltema but couldn't recognise what I need!

My grandmother(Sweden) put "cotton wool"= ( "Fetvadd") (Importent not cotton=bomull) between the windows and on top of that she put white moss (dried), and then taped the window inside the house around the window so it became tight. Wow, Rosie, your story leads like a journey of the soul. The universe showed you everything that you could or might want to have but ultimately consolidated your decision of what your soul really wanted. The universe was making sure you were making the right call for yourself and like a beautiful cliff hanger in a movie, just when you thought all was lost - another soul decided for some reason that you needed to have their beloved summer home. Something speaks of divine intervention. And now the previous owners are probably getting a kick out of watching you on YT renovating and add your own touches to a place that meant a lot to them. So glad the universe stepped in . Nothing is by chance in this world - That which meant for you - will never pass by you. It may take a while to come to you but it will never pass you. I just stumbled upon your channel. I laughed as you found the perfect property in the south, not where you were looking for initially. I bought a house in Blekinge, also in the south, in October 2023. I am originally from Germany. I took a different route from you, I bought a house that was recently renovated and in a little town of 7.500 people that still seemed small to me, as I live in a town of 400k people currently. I knew I wouldn't be able to live there immediately, as I have my job, family and friends in Germany, but I wanted to use it as a vacation house and then later, at whatever point I felt comfortable to do it, end up moving there. My place isn't remote, I have neighbours, a garden, a supermarket just a few hundred meters away. But I also have the forest in reach and a huge lake, perfect for swimming and kayaking, just a few minutes from my house. I love it. It's expensive to keep up with the costs for two homes atm, but it's been absolutely worth it. In Germany I just wouldn't have been able to afford such a nice house and property. I was also someone that prefered the north initially, but I find it's easier to commute between the two countries living in the south and it's also kind of in the middle between traveling further up to Norway or westwards to Finland. A great adventure. I think prices will keep rising in the area as more and more people will discover the beauty and affordability of southern Sweden. But seeing you still live there almost three years later, seems like it was the right thing to do at that time. :) Best regards from a fellow house buyer!

Welcome to Sweden having the wood stove and fire place sorted out and fixed is a really good thing to do because in winter there is quite often power outages depending on where in Sweden you are and having a fireplace or wood stove to heat the house may be crucial in case that happens and also making shore the road to your house is free from snow so you can get wood and groceries delivered in case you run out some supermarkets here in Sweden like Coop and ICA have online shopping with home delivery and that may be useful to you since you don't have a car if your house is not to far away that is

Lucky for me, the other bidder had found another property, and so i got the house at a lower bid. Life in the forest is good for the soul, do not expect to grow much up there (where are you?), poly tunnels are good for veggies and try to start early in the spring. I have an hot air pump that works to around -20,-25. and when i say works. it pumps some warm air at those cold temperatures. But i also have a boiler for burning wood in the kitchen that is hooked up to all the radiators in the house, so that's pretty much whats keeping us alive during those cold days. You're gonna think i'm joking or exaggerating but a property like that where I'm looking (massachusetts) would cost like 200k or more depending on how much acres is included. getting something for 40k would be an absolute dream. location, location, location i guess...
