WHY I MOVED TO SWEDEN | Q&A and Mini Updated Cabin Tour (Story 12)

The story behind my solo move from busy London to a cabin in the Swedish forest. I'm answering some of the questions I've been asked a lot these past months, about my reasons for moving here and my plans for the property and the land. You can jump to the questions that interest you most.

At 63 years old with no remodeling experience I remodeled a little cottage style house watching KZbin tutorials. I put up drywall, trim , refinished the floors ,cut out a small doorway, installed a door all on my own. It gave me confidence in myself . The word 'can't ' was not in my vocabulary. After the house was finished I worked on the garden making concrete statues . I learned this from watching KZbin. I'm so happy you as a young woman can inspire other young people to just go for it ! If I was a young woman again I'd definitely move to Sweden ! What a beautiful country !

I was twenty-two when my husband bought me a sledgehammer and a house in London to use it on. I loved that renovation (with builders) so much that we sold that house as soon as it was complete and bought an old fort in Provence while we renovated office buildings in Soho, travelling backwards and forwards. Several houses later we ended up in an old duck-hunting cabin on San Francisco Bay. I renovated most of it myself, my husband was not at all hands-on, but he was always encouraging, even when he woke one morning to find my foot coming through the ceiling; I had decided to expose the vaulting. I have lived here since 2002 and transformed it, reconfiguring the flow, and removing hideous popcorn ceilings, textured walls and condo carpets. I fell in love with the scope of a wood-framed house, so much easier to work with than brick! I ripped down CDX into planks for the simple look I wanted, restored the 1946 kitchen cabinets, created a new entrance with a hall for more privacy, and created a garden by terracing down to the water and hauling soil and manure in my trusty pickup. Every single thing in this house, including driftwood furniture I made when I had no budget at all, has felt the touch of my hand. Those years of hard physical labour have taken their toll and at seventy-six I reluctantly confine myself to smaller carpentry, but I wouldn't for anything change the excitement, challenge and satisfaction of using ingenuity and a sense of possibility to create my own home. It is indescribably touching to me to read of young women like you adventuring and creating on your own terms. Strength to you!

I am a 65 year old woman and the last 3 summers I have been camping on my land alone after retiring (the c19 pushed me to make that decision). I have also been asked if I was afraid to be there alone and I actually feel safer there than when I lived near Mpls MN. That first summer I only used a hand pump for water. You are so correct regarding the fear that has been instilled in society. It is actually amazing what we can all do and the help/info available from the internet.

I was an only child and we moved a lot while I was in school. I attended 3 different schools in one 9 month school year due to my Father accepting various promotions. I quickly learned being a loner did make the constant moves less of a challenge. My 50+ year career as a flight attendant with a US legacy based airline reaffirmed just how much I cherish solitude. The lock down did not impact me as much socially as it did others. Since retirement (related to the Pandemic), I now actually have to force myself to go beyond the mailbox at the end of the driveway. If I were younger and didn't have a major health issue I would definitely consider a similar lifestyle - just in a warmer climate. (I do not have any family so no real ties.) I admire your focus, spunk and outlook on life. You are a determined, independent, fierce warrior! Your channel is a true treat. (Re pets, maybe you could have a 'country cat' - as a reward for being your official Mouser you could feed it and it to exist on your property. It could live inside or outsie, as it wishes, so it's freedom is real. I have a friend that is allergic to cats but has a few that live on her property. She runs a small animal rescue so keeping mice from the feed is paramount.)

I made the move to Northern Finland…..I can relate so much to your reasons for moving, it was similar for me. The feeling of freedom here to just go and walk in the forest, amongst the giant rocks left littered about the land by the glaciers. The midnight sun and how calm the lake is when you’re rowing gently at night yet you need sunglasses! Hard to explain the beauty of exploration when you just wander and come across things like crystal clear pools and waterfalls. It’s the right move….the one that made sense of my longing to feel free.

I lived this type of life for over a decade, bought a small house in the middle of Sweden, both some land and forest included, many dreams and ideas, renovated a lot, beautiful summers, even better autumns with al its colors, vast winter landscapes during winter with ice crystals everywhere. I'm also introvert believing alone is best, but after a while I started to feel sad about not being able show and share this paradise like land I was living in. So last year I wrap everything up sold and moved back to town. Paradise lost!, town sucks as well, but now I start to think that beauty is inside your head, perhaps that was was meant by: Behold, the kingdom of God is sudden upon you.

I tried living in a town and sure all the sounds at night made me not feel alone, but i was still very much alone and the sounds at night and during the day started to bother me a great deal. Having a dog or pet at an apartment, not always possible. I started to feel like i was locked up in a bunker with no way out. No freedom whatsoever. Sure, you dont have to deal with a lot of things as u do with your own house on the countryside, but i feel less alone and more free. I wasnt supposed to live in a bunker. It wasn't my natural habitat and i can breathe now. I'm never alone, i have birds, animals , i have wifi , i have everything I need. I don't really need other humans to make me happy. I just need my space , nature and a house to sleep in at night. My blood pressure goes up everytime i have to go to the city. The noises and everything..but it also has to do with personality and how you were brought up. I dont ever feel a need to show off. I am a single woman who" built my house" from being a wreck to what it is now. I only need to make myself proud. There is no way of making a city girl out of me, i hate living in bunkers and share washing machines with others. Chickens strolling free, and growing your own food, that's true life.

It's so funny, there are so many parallels between our experiences, but mine's more your journey but lite 😂 I always longed to live in a big city, preferably New York, and was fascinated with the sense of anonymity one can have in a place surrounded by so many lives. I didn't leave the country I was born in, Germany, but moved to it's capital and went to uni there. I still love it to this day, but after five years I craved something different. After hiking in the dolomites and crossing the Alps by bike I realized that it's exactly the beautiful, absolute solitude and calmness nature can give me which I hungered for in Berlin. Since I'm not yet finished with my studies and, as always, broke, I moved back in with my parents and renovated an 11sqm cabin on their property where I currently live. It is not very adventurous, not very glamorous but I hope to some time be able to follow a similar path to you and find a small cabin somewhere up north. Until then I'll just have to live my dream vicariously through your videos!

Fellow introvert here. Bought a 2 car garage that was surrounded by a 3 m high wall on all the sides that matter, and a park where there is no wall. I live very close to the capital but because of this wall and park also in a world of my own. I turned the place into a cozy little home with a very clear distinction between my world and the rest of the world. Has been a godsend. I have a younger brother with basically the same problems I have. He lives in Sweden now in his own little house, just like you. He has his own private lake on his property. He could be your neighbor.

I have been following you from the beginning of your Sweden adventure and you are doing it right! Following your heart while causing no harm us the true meaning of life. And pets do have a purpose - my horses and dogs are keeping me sane. They are my family. But one has a great responsibility and cost, which limits the freedom of traveling lightly. That's why I have not moved to Sweden or France this year, but am buying a house only 50 km from my current city in Germany. Having an old horse an two senior dogs effects life choices very much.

Cats are almost a must when living in old country houses, to control the mice that come in. A cat that can go in and out as it pleases is also a free cat. Not the best animal to travel with, though.

Have lived in a big city in Sweden and wanted alot of people around me. The older I get the less I find this to my interest. So I moved to a small society in Sweden. I got a fantastic house for the same price I sold my apartment for.

I don't know how 'old' you are but l am 58 and last year l, for the first time in my life, took everything out a large caravan (12 mtr x 3.65 mtr) and converted it into a -as l call it- beach house. Isolated it, made it waterproof again. Tiled for the first time in my life (thanks to You Tube!) Put in timber floors, timber walls. Took out the horrible bathroom and turned it into a New York loft style bathroom. Put a woodstove in. Made a natural English cottage style garden around it made for bees and other insects. And my next project will be building my own cobhouse. So l think as long as you are healthy there is no excuse of taking totally new turns in life. Just as l gave up my life in Holland and l am now traveling with my car with a rooftent to find my plot... exchange my motorbike for a horse and start living life in first gear....! And l just love how so many people step out of the fearbased ratrace and starting to discover what life is all about! It's one big blessing meeting so much very interesting people out here! You have plenty of space for a garden and with your skills, you can build some raised beds so that the soil warms quicker. Bonus info from your neighbour here in Denmark ; You do have a pet. You have thousands of them roaming your forest :) Hares, Foxes, Deer etc. are all around you. They feed themselves, and will probably start to visit at some point. On the down side, there are also ticks that carry a nasty disease - especially in Sweden they are all over the place. And there are wolves, lots of wolves. Even though skiddish by nature, one is cool, but a pack could be a problem if you have food sources laying around. A dog is a good idea if you need a buddy. Being an ultra runner, I am used to moving quite the distance by foot. And when I go for recreational all day hikes I bring my labrador, because he will alert me in the night when sleeping in shelters etc.

Wow, what a story! It is really nice to follow your progress and I must admit: I envy you sooooooo much! :)))) Several times I thought: "Oh, Sweden, I wanna go to Sweden too." (during this global crazy-ness, many would). I would love to come there and give you a hand building your house ... I'm new to your channel, but little of what I watched in this video was new to me. Fellow introvert, adventurer with a few renovation/building projects under my belt that I kind of accidentally fell into. All on a budget too, and without car. On my own. Yeah, living in a house you are renovating is a balancing act, literally. I've lost count of the decades climbing over piles of stuff and building material, walking sideways.... A warning: building is addictive. Even when you are fed up with doing renovating jobs (building from scratch _is_ easier, at least for a tiny house), you step into a musty old empty building and you start seeing potential and feel the itch to do it all again. "Drop perfection" is good advice. As some quotable person once said, done is better than perfect. This is the second video I watched after the library/desk one. You have come a long way in such a short time under challenging conditions. Wish you all the best for your ventures. Oh, and rabbits are great lawn mowers.

It’s nice to hear someone talk similar to how I talk. I mean re living a life defined by yourself and not being in auto pilot, and making things happen in a way that doesn’t necessarily fit the common mold. I find myself living alongside people in a parallel, where they are living a very suburban replicated life. I don’t live like that, but not many people do. So it’s refreshing to find people that talk like you. I recognise the freedom. It’s really very inspiring and encouraging. For the duration of your vids, I feel I can stop swimming against the current and watch someone who speaks a similar lifestyle language. Thanks for that. And all this time I was sure you were a full-time ballerina. Seriously, I never thought you were a designer, but thought you must have a program on your pc that had design ware on it. You have been on the Pacific Crest Trail so you've been in Eastern Wa state. I live in western WA 50 miles south of Seattle and just 20 miles from Mt Rainier as the crow flies, it was majestic yesterday with lots of new snow covering the glaciers. It's wonderful that you are so widely traveled. I've done many road trips all over the world and traveled everywhere throughout Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. I'm in my 80th year now and will never regret my travels. A person experiences so much growth from traveling as you have done on foot. Keep surprising your audience please.

Beautiful. Reminds me so much of my home location in Northern Sweden. And you've been trekking in all those places I'm still planning to go to. For the record, I'm an introvert Swede being married to an extremely extrovert London wife - the polar opposites of each other, but we've been married for 12+ years and counting. The interesting thing is that she prefers tranquil Sweden, while I'm personally more attached to London.

Living out in the countryside is sometimes a challenge unless you have good neighbors or friends. However, making friends in Sweden can be difficult. Once you are friends you are friends for life. I wish you all the best.

An 81-year-old ex Brit, Canadian living in Vermont who likes KZbin I am trying to see where you got your accent. Originally I would have said that you were from 'Down Under'. Now you say that you spent your childhood in Holland. lived in London and traveled a lot. I can relate to much of this. We have many similar characteristics. Most of my KZbin friends DID move to Portugal and I correspond with many of them Another (Talasbuan) set up a home in the woods of Northern Sweden (possibly not far from you). He and his Swedish wife have a son. They clearly share much with your way of life. I look forward to your entries here.
