A D rig made with zig hooklink which is cheaper than fluoro and just as good!
I’m a huge fan of mono hooklinks because they’re not expensive and strong. You can of course use your mainline as hooklink but it comes on big 1000m spools so they’re bulky to carry around in a tackle box. So I wanted to find a thin, strong material that I could buy on a 100m spool which makes it much better value than a 20m spool of fluoro. I found a material I really like and I’ve had lots of success with this rig in the last 12 months.

Mono is cheap, strong and reliable. We really don’t need much else most of the time. There are plenty of materials you can use but for a lightweight hooklink I like to use zig material because the small spool of 100m fits neatly in my tackle box and it’s not expensive. You can use zig material to create a simple mono hair rig but creating D-rigs using 0.30 mono with a standard sized carp hook isn't straightforward (as you’ll see) which is where this rig comes in. Although I’ve had to add a few bits to make it work, all the components are reusable between rigs and you’ll get many carp out of them. Nowadays this is what I mostly use for small/medium waters and it’s an absolute winner!

Or purchase a bulk spool of Berkley Big Game or Daiwa Sensor. You can then fill all your reel spools for a couple of seasons and make hundreds of rigs, for about a tenner. The trade has also tried to convince us (with great success) that we need bespoke carp line etc. (or at least a bespoke label or brand). It's progress I guess but I do miss some aspects of how it was back in the 80s : ) Anyway, I appreciate your videos and have learnt from them. Thanks.

For tying loops what are your thoughts using the ‘perfection loop’ . I have used this many years in fly fishing for trout and recently for pike . I have not had fails and it’s easy to tie.

Great video found you on tiktok just going through you videos on here. Do you find any benefits between using finer line to the videos where you are using heavier? Ive always used fluorocarbon but can see the financial benefits. I use amnesia for my sea fishing and its great memory free mono gonna give that a try.

Hi mate, glad you found us here! The Zig-Flo is an interesting material and I certainly learnt a lot by testing it. I was certainly able to catch some very big carp using it but when I got my cast wrong, then it did tangle much easier than heavy mono. I never felt that I caught more using the finer mono but if I want to fish a few grains of sweetcorn on a basic mono hair rig, then this material would be top of my list. Amnesia makes a good hooklink for sure. I prefer the mono snag leader because it comes on large diameter spools and it’s a bit nicer to handle. But you aren't going to catch any more carp with it. I still have never found any reason to justify fluorocarbon and I don’t think I ever will! New rig video out tomorrow that will be right up your street. Two years of testing and it’s been fantastic. Yes, absolutely, you can use this rig with a PVA mesh. You can either thread the whole hooklink through the mesh, and pull the hook into the bottom. Or just hook the mesh onto the hook. If you do that, then hook it on twice so it doesn't come off on the cast. All the best with it 😊

Hello Matthew, two questions. Why not a Berkley Trilene big game 20lb instead of 12lb zig flo. You do you use the Berkley line with the Mono D-rig? The second question, why do you no longer use the familiar figure-eight knot for a loop?

Hi Leo, Iif you want to use 20lb Berkely I would just make a standard D rig as I’ve done in one of my other videos (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqCrc2SdnsSmh9U). I chose the 12lb Zig-Flo for this rig because I wanted to show that you don’t always need to use 20lbs materials to catch large carp. The Zig-Flo is also available in small 100m spools that fit in a tackle box much easier that a spool of Big Game. Also, this rig was designed to give anglers an option when lake rules specify mono hooklinks only and a lighter breaking strain than the mainline. I don’t use the figure of 8 loop knot because it is not as strong as the non-slip mono loop knot (by some margin according to my own extensive testing). That’s not much of an issue when you are using 20lb hooklink but with a 12lb hooklink, my knots need to be as strong as they can be. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

Nice Rig, too many people imost use hooks far to big then adding a barb, i used barbed back before i learned they are not needed to keep a carp on & a barbless thats sharpened - you actually hook far more fish, ive old magazine's from the 80s ( they was handed down Matt i wasnt old enough to buy them 😂) i have these kickers but honestly ive not given them a fair go as im catching without them - if its not broke & all that but i will give them a fair trial, went mh local 3 nights last week & had 11 smallest 19 biggest was 36, , was a amazing session- hoping things are good for you & this years yr bedt yet 🙏🎣🎣

Hi there, just because it says zig hooklink doesn't mean that the line floats. This material is rated as neutrally buoyant so it neither floats nor sinks by itself. It's not an issue at all, as long as the rig mechanics are right.

You can do away with the kickers if when you form the d is pass the tag end through the eye then lay it along the shank of the hook and then do the knotless knot traping the tag end

Hi mate, I know anglers are paranoid about chod and silt but just because I get a load of it stuck on the rig after I’ve wound in doesn't stop me from catching off such spots when the conditions are right. I used to use rig foam religiously but I ran out during Covid and nowadays don't bother. Rig foam can be useful over weed but I wouldn't bother over a bit of chod personally. The one thing I do insist on when fishing over soft spots is to add a PVA mesh bag of stick mix or boilie crumb with some nice liquid attractor over the top. Scopex Squid stick mix + the spod syrup is a classic combo that I use most of the time. Don’t be afraid to shorten down the mono over the soft stuff either. 6” is plenty long enough. Cheers, Matt

I use 20 pound mono due to all the mussel beds around where I fish. Would you still recommend the long shanks? I have been debating switching back to mono hooklinks and I'm concerned that the thicker mono will cause issues that the kicker may not fix.

Hi mate, in my experience 20lb mono can vary in thickness from 0.37 to 0.45 so I would make the decision based on diameter rather than rated breaking strain as you’re right, a kicker might not be enough to sort the problem. TBH I wouldn't be happy taking on mussel beds with 20lbs (0.40) hooklink. It’s just not enough in my experience. When faced with zebra mussels I use 8-10m of 30lbs (0.50) or 40lbs (0.60) Nash heavy duty snag leader as a leader, and then I use the same material for hooklink as it’s really good value for money compared to fluoro. When you are using mono of 0.50 to 0.60 you really need an out turned eyed (chod style) hook. I use the size 6 Nash chod twisters for this and they work great as a simple D- rig. I also like to extend the D with a blowback tube and it suits bottom baits better like this. This is the setup I used in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKvQgpp_ntx5f5I Hope that helps. Just thought id pose this question on the latest upload, As an American Carp Angler not many people if any at my local venues fish for carp let alone with boilies. There is also not a lot of boilie shaped natural foods around like tiger nuts. Ive always used some fake corn on a hair rig with a ground/particle mix that included corn. I cannot afford/ do not have the means to feed lots of boilies into my swim. However ive recently been trying to use boilies[ 15mm], and i know size really isnt a factor however ive drawn a blank 3 times in a typically productive swim. Have i run into bad luck or do the Fish simply not associate the Boilie with food due to my circumstances? I plan to continue to fish with identical rigs and baiting methods swapping for a boilie vs fake corn. Id love to catch on boilie as i have a sense of confidence with real foods vs plastic however im starting to feel dis heartened. If you have any experience with types of baits for lakes/ areas that have specific or radically different types of food available id be extremely happy to hear about it. As researching these concerns have proven fruitless.

Hmm, this is a tricky one… I have complete confidence in boilies, personally I’ve never come across a water that I can’t crack with boilies but there’s only so many waters I’ve fished. Don’t forget blanking is part of fishing… I don’t catch every time, I can blank as much as I catch. But I have confidence in my whole setup - from bait to rigs - because I know it works. It’s then a question of timing and location. Don’t worry about the lack of availability of boilie shaped foods, that’s not a problem, for a carp, food is food whatever the shape. I fish a river where there are hardly any other carpers, therefore hardly any boilies going in, and I catch them on boilies. If you’re fishing a big water, sometimes, they’re just not there. I don’t use plastic or fake corn in my fishing for reasons of fish safety (I don’t want a ‘live’ rig in the water if my mainline fails). If I want to use corn, I use real corn. A simple mono hair rig made with some lightweight mono is perfect for this type of fishing. I’m not sure I’ve helped here but don’t be afraid to stick with boilies.

Mathew has hit the nail on the head with that information. It's a shame that boilies aren't something you can easily get and use often, I don't do it often but in a lot of cases pre-baiting a spot for a period of time before fishing can really pay off and in your case it certainly will as there's not many people targeting/feeding the carp so they won't be pressured. They probably have never seen a boilie but they will eventually work out its a food item and start eating them.

Chop the boillies in half boillie chops and corn is a brill combo also crush your boillies down and put in a pva mesh bag and if u put your corn in salt water it won’t melt the bag 👍

Depends mate… what you’re fishing for, where you’re fishing, the quality and diameter of your hooklink, and the quality of your knot. The way to test it is to perform a deadlift test using a figure of 8 loop with your hooklink. I can get about 10lbs on the 12lb Zig flo which is plenty strong enough for big carp.

I can’t see your second question here but you asked also about hook size and bait size for 20lb carp. Ask 10 different anglers and you’ll get 10 different opinions on this 😊 My advice is you don’t need anything bigger than a size 8 hook, and I’d use 15mm baits. This way, you’ll get more individual baits per kilo and you’ll force the carp to move from bait to bait which makes them ‘easier’ to catch. Spend money on good hooks (Nash pinpoint range) and bait (all good bait works) and use mono for hooklinks, that’s the way I do it.

I once hooked a discarded fertilizer bag full of silt and successfully "landed" it on 8lbs mono. Breaking 8lbs line is actually not as easy as it sounds.

I’ve just joined a club that one of its small carp waters ( under 3 acres) holds fish to high 30s . My present rods are 12ft 2.75tc I’m in two minds whether to change them to 10ft 3.25 or 3.5 tc what would you advise Matthew. Cheers.

I know I'm not Matt but my two cents would be with the quality or rod blanks these days 3.25 is the sweet spot in my eyes because it gives you flexibility when fishing bags or snaggy situations etc but also good fish playing qualities (obviously this is somewhat dependent on the quality of the rod)

Hi Geoff, fish size doesn’t matter, it depends how far you have to cast and how mobile you need to be. There’s nothing wrong with the rods you have. I have a set of 9ft 3lb dwarfs which are great for carp of any size. The handle is shorter than conventional rods so you’re limited in distance to 70/80yds. I also have a set of scopes, with a conventional handle, better casting distance in a retractable design. The x series are cool but you don’t get the benefit of the mobility of the retractable design. I agree 3.25 is a good all rounder.

The maximum distance that I would need to cast would be about 50yards. Thought the tc strength needed to be improved to cope with the possible fight of larger fish. Maybe stick with my 12ft 2.75 Sonik sk3 ‘s for now ,no need to rush out and replace asap .Thanks for the info guys ,much appreciated.

Hi Dan, there are 3 things that could be happening: 1. Savage liners 2. Nuisance species like chub picking up your bait but not hooking themselves 3. The carp is ejecting your rig If you use a mono d rig with a lightweight mono (12 to 15lbs) like I do in this video, if the carp is picking up your rig and ejecting it, it will come back mangled so you’ll know for sure that you’ve missed a bite. Let me get this right. So there's no difference between using a 12lb hooklength and a 25lb hooklength when fishing for big fish other than the thicker material with have better abrasion resistance? The actual breaking strain is irrelevant as even the heaviest carp rod cannot put enough pressure on to break the 12lb line? Or even 10lb?

Yes, mate, that is correct. The other big difference between thin mono and thick mono is the stiffness. I wouldn't dream of trying to use 12lb zig material when casting 100+ yards and if you aren't at the level where you can hit the clip and feel the lead down consistently, then thin mono would only be suitable at relatively short range. There’ll be a new video out this spring featuring a good all round anti tangle mono that anyone can use for any situation. Hopefully that will explain the subject better. Cheers, Matt.

@matthewcollinsangler thanks for the reply. Is it true when using running leads that the lead itself can fly up the line on the cast. I read somewhere that when using running rigs that it's possible the line can move through the run ring meaning you could be fishing with a very long hooklength.

Don’t like the way those fish are hooked Matthew, what could be the solution for this? Shorten the rig or overloading it? On drilling that mono will cut into the flesh in the side of the carps mouth.

Hi mate, I’m not sure what you are referring to TBH 🤔 The mono is 0.30 which is thicker than many braids or coated braid after stripping back. If I wasn’t 100% happy with this rig I wouldn’t have shared it.

19lb illusion from fox is perfect sinks like a brick strong as you like mega abrasion resistant and supple I do use an anti tangle sleeve though I've been using that with the d rig hook holds and how far back they hook have been quite hard to beleive sometimes

At 7:10 - 7:20 you can see these carp are hooked in the corner of their mouth and not in the middle. I don’t like hooking fish in the corner and it’s unnecessary. Multiple causes: The used rig is too long, the kicker is too short or if you are fishing with a wafter, the rig needs weight. Otherwise it will fly uncontrollable in the fishes mouth when it sucks it up. In your case I think the rig is too long(24 cm). You can also use a shot on the hook to pin the hook down. I like them from Carpwhisperer.

I've mentioned it in the video, yes you can do that, but if you use long anti tangle sleeve and you forget to thread one on after you tie the loop knot, I wanted to show how to use a bit of mono as a threading tool 👍

Long shank, short shank, kicker, no kicker, heat shrink……everything has a purpose and appropriate use. If it suits your needs you use it, if not you don’t. Thing is, you’re not restricting yourself. Only thing that’s surprised me with this is you using zig line for a bottom bait. Zig line is buoyant, not massively so, but still buoyant. Surely it’s floating up off the bottom between the hook and swivel?

Hi Nick, So this material is rated as neutrally buoyant on the spool so it neither floats nor sinks by itself. It's not been an issue at all, as long as the rig mechanics are right. TBH a coated hooklink with a stripped back supple section near the hook is far more likely to sit badly on the bottom than a neutrally buoyant mono hooklink. Cheers, Matt
