Can it be played without the thumb pick, just using the thumb + a length of nail? I can do everything in these tutorials, but using the thumb pick just kills me... Can't feel the strings I am picking.

Yes of course but the groove is going to be a bit different. Just practise some easier stuff with the thumbpick. I had the same problem. Its gonna take some time

Maybe drop the intro for now, that is actually the hardest part. I'll probably do an extra video on that first chord, it's more of a trick with your left hand than really "building" technique!
