This is my favorite cold war tank. It was so innovative for what it was. It was really more of a tank destroyer than an MBT, as it was meant to fight Soviet tanks from ambush positions. After it fired its 105mm gun, it had a driver facing backwards to drive it out of position. Then, the forward facing driver would fire up the gas turbine and scoot to its next ambush position.
@DarkShroom2 жыл бұрын
tank destoryers where not only used in ambush, they where a lighter vehical that matched the same calibre as an MBT, a glass cannon stratergy where you'd be faster but less armoured than the enemy tank and literally hunt the enemy tanks this is an MBT because it is highly armoured, sure it has no clear offensive role that i can see, it was intended to abush the enemy
@mc75cruiser92 Жыл бұрын
@@DarkShroomtechnically the 103 does not fill the requirements for an MBT. One of the important requirements is to well, be a general combat tank. Be able to fight other tanks head to head while being as effective at infantry support and bombarding enclosed positions The point of MBTs replacing light, medium, heavy tanks *and self propelled guns* is because they could fill any of those roles with armor, speed, and effective firepower. I doubt the strv103 would be a good infantry support tank, so honestly it fits into a "cold war era tank hunter" sort of type.
@cannack3 ай бұрын
@@mc75cruiser92 yeah, they were intended to fight like tanks but to leverage their very obvious hull-down advantage, speed, and sloped armor, & lower visibility to win. They were not the only tanks, the swedes had in service with these the STRV-centurion, routinely upgraded & eventually upgunned to 105mm. The centurions would fill the MBT role in particular the infantry support role very well, not to say the 103 *couldn't* do that, but I would much, much rather a traditional turret and cupola for urban operations for example. most of Sweden's defense was intended to turn a soviet advance into a slow moving meat-grinder, same idea as the west Germans but a different approach, harder geography. They replaced the centurions, s-tanks, IKV91s & a good portion of the PBV APCs with leopards, and CV90 coming into the early 2000s, a very extensive process that was.

To think that this tank is several decades old yet several decades ahead of our time. It was built to minimize crew, with a capacity for three, the commander doubling as the main gunner, and the radioman/loader as its reverse driver, it could go backwards just as fast forwards. Absolutely ingenious design. The upper hull angle was so great it could defeat incoming shells with sheer angle instead of thickness. This thing is mindblowing.

There are just a few of them left in sweden. They were decomissioned in the 90’s and if you ran a legit tank museum back then, you could have one for free. I believe the one in the video is at ”Arsenalen” tank museum in Strängnäs, sweden -in running condition. Another one is displayed outside the ”Armemuseum” (swedish army museum) in central Stockholm, stationery, locked, but fully availible to poke and feel.

@phalanx38035 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminingenito530 This is a gas turbine out of the m1 Abrams kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqjGn6KDl7tqoK8 there also know as turbo shafts there more or less a jet engine but instead of powering a massive fan to push a plane through the sky they have a shaft to power things like tanks, boats, generators and helicopters. the Strv 103 uses a combo of a standard diesel engine and a gas turbine when standing still or at low speeds it uses only the diesel but a high speeds the gas turbine kicks in for more power kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3K9fZSoo9CBq6c When it come to standard Diesel vs a gas turbine the Diesel has alright power a hell of a lot of torque and is fuel efficient. on the other hand a gas turbines have a monstrous amount of power have good amount of torque and can be fairly small but they eat fuel even the most efficient Gas turbines eat fuel at a very high rate and there loud as hell even at idle. Here's a good video that explains how a gas turbine works kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXeQaGOvo8h0jLs
@jameslacey8585 жыл бұрын
Turbocharged diesel engines are the most efficient in the world, for every 14psi of turbo boost, it doubles horsepower and torque as long as the engine is structurally sound. So if you want more power put a bigger turbo on the engine simple math.
@phalanx38035 жыл бұрын
@@jameslacey858 while true a Diesel will never be able to meat the insane power of a gas turbine reliably. i seen drag Diesels that can make power like a gas turbine but they need to be rebuilt after every event.
