Sounds great but I can hear a lot of background hiss with any distortion in... is this pedal actually usable live with distortion?
@strymon4 жыл бұрын
Iridium is very usable live with distortion :) The noise is actually due to the fact that our studio where we record our demos actually has a transformer for the entire commercial building we are in very close by and gets picked up by guitar pickups, especially when gain is applied. Iridium actually has a 110dB typical signal-to-noise ratio.

Im wondering what the advantages/disadvantages to using reverb/delay after Iridium vs before it. If I usually plug my rig into the front end on my amp, would I treat the Iridium the same way?
@nikkinik21615 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I would prefer to integrate the Iridium into my default pedalboard (hooked up via 4CM to my amps). Use case: Playing at home with the Iridium, live & rehearsals without the Iridium, hooked to one of my main amps. But - both scenarios with my pedalboard without the need to rewire a thing .. (maybe only some MIDI controls to select a few presets on the Iridium). Is this possibly? ...
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
The difference is that with delays/reverbs after Iridium, they will be able to process the signal coming out of Iridium before being sent to your monitoring. With delays/reverbs before Iridium, those effects are processing your guitar signal before Iridium's amp modeling. This means if you have a distorted sound set on Iridium, you will be feeding delays and reverb into the distortion, thereby, distorting those sounds vs. the other way around. I tend to place those effects after Iridium and it sounds great.
@andyholley61275 жыл бұрын
strymon so how do you run delays and reverbs “after” the iridium like a traditional amp fx loop?

What is the output level of the iridium? line level, mic level, instrument level? I hope you say its line level, because that is what is necessary to run direct to consoles and maintain signal integrity.
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
Iridium's output level really depends on what you're running into the pedal (whether that is line level or instrument) and what you have the pedal's DRIVE and LEVEL set to. It can easily reach line level output. If you have an interface with selectable inst/line inputs, I'd set it to line level unless it's too quiet, then set it to instrument.

Can you use just as an IR box for when using with a real amp and load box like a Two Notes Captor? To save on wear and tear, I do not like using my amp just for practice etc, but would like it wired up to a single unit that does IRs that lets me decide if I want to use the amp, or the amp models -- the idea being that I do not have to change cables or DAW input setting etc. Edit: I found the answer hidden in a tab "Want to use Iridium’s IR cabinets but not the amps? Engage Iridium’s Amp Bypass mode, and connect a preamp or preamp pedal". P.S. As this already does DAC well, then adding line outputs for running monitors, plus USB audio so it can be the primary sound device in OS would be killer. That would make my interface redundant. Include digital that an option mic pre can connect to. P.P.S I do almost all post cabinet reverbs in DAW. As far as I can tell Strymon do not do plugins. Oh well.

A stereo IR uses at least two mics to create a sense of space. It's slight but it is different than mono. Picture a real amp in the room. Even though it's one thing, your two ears discern the space. What quality is it you are missing? Just interested to know what you'd like to hear more of. Different topic somewhat, but yesterday I watched Universal Audio's product launch video and Cory Wong, who is really known for his clean sound, came in and showed how he uses UAD plugins with no amps to build most of Vulfpeck's recordings. He had specific EQ tweaks to make up for no amp and it sounded good to my ears. I'm a tube amp guy, but this Strymon was satisfying to me.
@samthorne4885 жыл бұрын
Its a different spectrum of color. a depth in feeling, push and pull from the amp. when you hit it, it hits back. i was watching these guys dig in at some point where the amp should be more dynamic and it wasn't giving back. It was struggling to give that organic sustain and longevity. Theres also a major difference between sitting in a mix and stand alone. I think this is a great tool, Theres going to be a lot of players that don't want a Axe or Helix that would benefit from direct live. As a producer, I'm rooting for this technology, so i can show up to sessions with this, instead of a expensive Matchless or bogner. but as of now, listening to the samples provided, with a real amp mic'ed up, through the same set of monitors. Real amp is the clear pick. I have all of the Uad amps, the Wav bundles, plugin galore. They're all still missing something.

Get a HX Stomp, spend $200 more for way more versatility and options. No hate to Strymon but more power to the people.

itisthomas how do they do the same thing at all? The hx stomp is a multi effects pedal no? This is an amp and cab sim? What am i missing
@gdhi115 жыл бұрын
Forrester Payne the stomp contains amp modeling and is the little brother to the LT and Floor. I believe you are thinking of HXFX.
@itisthomas5 жыл бұрын
Forrester Payne it’s a multi effects. It’s a little brother to the big Helix. You can still get a amp, cab sim and effects all in one. It’s definitely something to look into. Way more amp choices, Cabs and effects.

@@itisthomas i see. i guess i was thinking about the version with just the fx? i didnt know that there were 2 smaller versions. im curious how the amp modelling of each effect unit compare to each other now. i apologize for assuming incorrectly

@@forresterpayne6879 No worries, Go youtube alex.guitars. He has amazing videos about the helix and people's "theories" on the helix. Totally recommend watching his videos.

Dear Strymon: do one pedal per amp, the whole chip dedicated to one amp. Dual Rectifier, all 3 channels, all 8 modes, tube/silicon, spongy/bold. One chip dedicated to the whole amp, you'll be unstoppable. Gotta catch em all!

I just got the Mooer Radar a month ago, why are you doing this to me Strymon??? T______T Now I have to sell everything again ;_____;

Was holding myself of buying the radar only cause it was in mono. Thanks God I waited for the Iridium to be released and jumped on it. Love it.

@@savanaviolenta I bet is a great sounding pedal. I can't wait until I get myself one!

Will this pedal work well if I have it last on my pedalboard and plug it into "power amp in" of my Hot Rod Deluxe amp?
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I would recommend using CAB BYPASS mode to defeat the IR cab modeling for this setup.

Get the pedals down in price, so we can explore the range more. BigSky price fixed at £450, timeline etc £400. Where is the multi pedal?

Luke Robinett a true free market capitalist! The more you make, for longer period of time, the cheaper it gets, is the maxim of market forces. Nothing American made is cheap, not that it should be, but big sky is ancient and things like Volante are new and cheaper.

Tobias Niederegger no not bad at all, but it’s at least 5 years old and Strymon refuse to release multi fx box. Why should I have to buy a reverb, delay, fx boxes just to stack a chorus and a tape delay over a shimmer reverb? That’s at least £900
@ponygracian5 жыл бұрын
Using this with a pedal like TS9 do I will need a noise gate for high gain sounds?
@strymon5 жыл бұрын
That really depends on how tolerant you are about the noises that guitars and their varying pickups can produce. Gain pedals raise the noise floor by default, so it would not be any different than plugging into the same amp with the same gain settings. I personally don't mind noise and do not use gates for it.

My 1963 Vox AC30 back boost never sounds distorted like the one in the pedal, your putting too much drive on the sound and its distorting it, and turn up the treble a bit more, mid at 12 o'clock, bass at 11. then you'll get the real chime from it.

That is a great pedal but it needs IRs and the Iridium would be a good addition to it or a Mooer Radar.
