Running into these "silly" things that we beat ourselves up over... it actually helps us to refresh our memories and to stay a step above the rest. I'm a software guy, but I 100% feel you on this one. Edit: Also, publishing your mistakes is one of the reasons I consider you among the best (and you would be first on my list, if I were to need this sort of service).

Well it seems to me there are 2 levels of objective here. 1 is getting the data, which the clamp maybe made possible, the other is a working phone. Don't know if it is possible to repair that board, but I am guessing it is not worth the trouble. Would you be back the the chips transplant to another 12pro top board?
@ststele11 ай бұрын
Data was #1 goal for sure. I will do full CPU / top board swaps on these for data only. For me it isn't worth the trouble for a fully functional phone though as it's easy to get into a lot of troubleshooting!

Yes indeed! This was intended to be a lengthy troubleshooting + top board swap video. Nope, just a cheap plastic clamp. LOL
@CommorancysGaming11 ай бұрын
To be fair, your $.30 clamp did temporarily fix the problem by aligning the crack perfectly. Obviously, once you closed it all back up, the crack unaligned and it went back to nonfunctional. There’s no real way to fix a cracked board like that without rebuilding the whole thing with a donor board. That assumes that component pairing issues don’t present.

costs.. The Graybeard engineer retired and a few weeks later the Big Machine broke down, which was essential to the company’s revenue. The Manager couldn’t get the machine to work again so the company called in Graybeard as an independent consultant. Graybeard agrees. He walks into the factory, takes a look at the Big Machine, grabs a sledge hammer, and whacks the machine once whereupon the machine starts right up. Graybeard leaves and the company is making money again. The next day Manager receives a bill from Graybeard for $5,000. Manager is furious at the price and refuses to pay. Graybeard assures him that it’s a fair price. Manager retorts that if it’s a fair price Graybeard won’t mind itemizing the bill. Graybeard agrees that this is a fair request and complies. The new, itemized bill reads…. Hammer: $5Knowing where to hit the machine with hammer: $4995

what a luck that no brain transfer was needed. Do you charge customer less because less time consuming work was done ?
@ststele11 ай бұрын
Only rarely. With flat rate pricing on recovery, it's really difficult to discount the easy ones and survive. When I take the wins compared to the losses & what is brought in over-all, there's no way we could make it if discounting the easy ones. I would have to charge the really difficult ones $1000s to make up for it. This board was so very close to needing a full transplant it's unreal & could have easily tied up 1~3 days. With data transfer, parsing & re-assembly afterwards, it still tied me up for a good long while & remained on the bench when I got back to work in the morning.
