Without a doubt, Stuart Whitman is one of the great classical actors in Hollywood; he did so many memorable roles!

Glad I ran across this interview. I got to know Stuart back in the 80's. Great man! Man of his word. I was lucking enough to spend some time with him that I still reflect on occasionally. I met him in Texas and went out to California to visit him. He didn't mention that Kenny Loggins lived up the hill from him in Santa Barbara. He also had a fantastic place on the beach in Malibu. He was very warm and kind to me. He is truly a down to earth quality man. He told me he really enjoyed the part in Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. I spoke to him about 9 months ago and he was doing great!

I remember him in a sci-fi movie called "City beneath the sea "(1971) with Robert Wagner as his villainous brother. Good movie with good special effects. He was also good in an episode of the Night Gallery. That episode scared the sh*t out of me.

Stuart Whitman is a great actor and seems like a really great guy. I hope he does some more films because he's still one of my favorites.

Stuart Whitman has always been one of my favorite actors. I think over the years the tabloid machines have written a lot of stuff that was meant to grab attention. I can't believe that he is anything but a genuine person. He took over the role of Boaz in The Story of Ruth, stating that he was happy to play " a spiritual part". He dug driveways and etc. in LA between acting jobs to have income. I read an article that quoted one of his children as saying that he "was the best Dad"! Nice interview with one of Hollywood's best and underrated actors.

Back in 1989 my secretary was Jane Russell's daughter-in-law. I went to a birthday party for my secretary's husband (Buck Waterfield) and Jane and Stu were there. Absolutely wonderful people and so genuine. Doubt today's Hollywood would have that much class.

Does anyone besides me remember "Cimarron Strip"? He also did TV. Stuart Whitman was one of the all time greats though a lot of people seem to have forgotten.

Delighted to see this interview posted. Whitman has withdrawn from the acting landscape within recent years. He did outstanding work in The Comancheros [ James Garner was originally considered to play Paul Regret opposite Gary Cooper ] as well as the series Cimmaron Strip in the late 60s. He should have had a bigger movie career after his Oscar nomination in the early 60s.

I had heard so much that Mr Whitman was not so nice, yet on this interview he came off very humble and even clapped at the end. Glad to see he is still around-and Jewish!....Maurice H

i heard that years ago but then when david janson died stuart was with the family that night and was marvellous in supporting them after their loss and i never heard a bad word about him. in fairness to him he worked in england as did many stars in the sixties and i know the british press always portrayed american actors as brash and unpleasent or awkward on set etc and rude nearly all of it was lies as our own film industry was flagging and making very dull films so american movies and their stars were far more popular.i think this is the source of the rumours about stuart as our press always makes a story up bringing in the war churchill and the empire foreigners cant hold a candle to our actors kind of thing.every world cup we insult other nations bringing up 500 year old battles rather than the actual game.so actors were fair game for the press

The interviewer is a year out on 'The Proud Rebel'. It was filmed between September and November, 1957, during which time Michael Curtiz developed appendicitis, not in 1956. See 4:35 on the video.

Stuart Whitman was originally considered to play one of the Maverick brothers in the television series opposite James Garner; the role was ultimately played by Jack Kelly. When The Comancheros was made, Garner had just successfully sued to break his Warner Brothers contract in order to leave the Maverick series. The Paul Regret role, which would have been tailor made for Garner, was offered to him, but Garner wrote in his biography that Warner contacted the President of Twentieth Century Fox and spoke negatively about Garner, after which the offer was withdrawn. Whitman played the role superbly and Garner was cast in William Wyler's film of The Children's Hour opposite Audrey Hepburn.

mrlmiller read the same thing also jack elam was cast as tully crow but they felt more star power was needed after losing garner so got lee marvin for a few days which explains why lees role was so curtailed and jack a well established actor was in the background with only one line of dialogue but he did get his fee for tully.the speech about poker stuart makes to lee furthers the maverick connection as it was also used in an early episode of that show probably included in the script thinking garner would play it.stuart was great though in this and the similar rio conchos where he played an army captain to richard boones reluctant gun smuggler

His wife Patricia LaLonde cast him as the real life lead in. "My Three Sons" some years before Fred MacMurray ever saw the first scripts for the TV series. And it wasen't untill 1974 at college in Santa Barbata that i found out hed also fathered a young ballerina that HAD to have been Elton John's inspiration for his "Madman Across The Water" album's song ,"Tiny Dancer"

Whitman is wearing a shirt made by London Laundry, who had the goofy idea to put matching neck tie fabric inside the sleeves and collar. I've got a couple of them, great shirts but different

originally the comancheros was to be shot with jim garner but warner wouldnt release him due to the trouble with maverick.stuart was a late replacement . lee marvin took the role of crow due to the studio thinking it needed a boost of star power after losing garner .the man who started playing crow jack elam wa dropped for lee .which is why jack is in the movie but in a tiny part but got his full fee.
