To locate the silicone in the fibreglass later. Watch all the videos in the series, it should all fall into place.

In the UK, I suggest The Fibreglass Shop in Brentford or CFS (Cornwall Fibreglass Supplies) which are good. I personally prefer the Scott Bader brand over Bonda or other types. If making latex masks, stick with plaster moulds as the moisture needs to be sucked out of the latex and fibreglass is waterproof. Both can be used for silicone masks, and fibreglass is lighter and more durable! -Stuart

This is wonderful and thank you. I will also be making the sculpture tools and a great thank you for that one. I make my molds, but every little bit if information helps. I just wondered where you get the thick plastic to smooth the face in clay?

I talced the back of the plaster head as I had waxed the bill-o out of it. I really want the hard plaster and the hard fibreglass back to part without damage. The front is all clay so I didn't wax as crazy this time and the clay will peel out. The talc is essential, but I liked to show it as a technique.

You need something that is fume proffed so as not to cause issues with electric and potentially flammable fumes as with polyester etc. Welding extractor suppliers are a good place to start as they have similar criteria. It depends on the workshop space you have available, as the amount of cubic metre/foot of air that needs extracted will determine the size of the unit. Some are free-standing and on wheels but occupy a large footprint, others are wall mounted.

Hey there, just found your videos and they're really nice and easy to follow, even for a newbie like me- thanks for making them! Can you point me in the direction of any decent extractors? I'm having a browse at the moment and there's alot out there.

Any word on part 3 yet? I'm kind of wondering how the final product comes out. For now it seems as though you have a fiberglass mold of the clay that you used to cover the bust (without any detail). Or, does the clay come off inside the fiberglass giving you the detail? Love to see it finished! Thanks.

as soon as I can finish it!

Ha ha - thanks. Yes, this video is as much about showing how much goes into stuff that isn't obvious when you look at a finished effect as it is about helping people make moulds. There are other ways of doing stuff that don't need to use fibreglass, especially when the demands of films are taken out of the equation (time limits, durability for hundreds of cats and unforgiving accuracy etc). I'll be doing vids on these too! Stuart

Nope, you open it up, clean out the clay and fill it with silicone. I am editing part 3, but am swamped with deadlines for work but will post as soon as I can! -Stuart

Dear Stuart, Love your videos. I made a fiberglass mold for my silicone mask. The problem is that the silicone is not curing in this mold. The same silicone cures in the mixing cup but the same silicone won't cure in this fiberglass mold. What wrong am I doing?
@stuartbray10 жыл бұрын
If you pour a small amount into the open mould, say the nose or chin, check to see. If the surface is not setting and remains tacky, then i suspect you have overcatalysed the resin. It is possible that latex gloves when glassing may have contaminated the surface too.

Hey Love you page so many useful vids! I was curious though i wanna do a fiberglass mold instead of ultra-cal for a mask i'm sculpting. But i just wondering where you can get these supplies. If there's a web sit you know of for the resin and fiberglass and gel and so on? Thanks again!

Hi Stuart, thanks so much for uploading these videos - they are very helpful! I'm trying to make a mother mold for my figure sculpture out of fibreglass at the moment. I was hoping to use "laminating polyester resin" with chopped strand fibreglass. However in this video you seem to use "gelcoat" resin. I'm wondering is laminating resin and gelcoat the same thing? Or is it better for me to use gelcoat when making mother molds of my figure sculptures? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kind regards, Brendan
@stuartbray5 жыл бұрын
Gel pat is a thicker version of the same resin. The gelcoat goes on first to catch the detail. Once that has set you then apply the laminating resin and glass which is thinner so it penetrates the fibres easily. Also the gelcoat prevents the texture of the glass from showing on the inside surface of the mould.

@@stuartbray Thanks for helpful reply! Can I ask what brand of gelcoat do you use? It would be good to get the gelcoat that you use in this video!

I like to use Scott Bader brand if you can get it.

Rubber kidneys from sculpture shops, and also the plastic scrapers that come with car body filler. You can cut up an old plastic sandwich box lid, like a tupperware box. Anything that has thick plastic, and is a made from something like High-density polyethylene (HDPE).

I'm not english (language) native. You dry the release wax with something? I understand right?
@stuartbray10 жыл бұрын
Yes. It will dry naturally as the solvents evaporate, but you can speed it up with a hair dryer.
