Don't let it be daunting...it's actually a beautiful, logical system and the same logic is used right across Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Burmese tones to an extent. Once you understand the system, you can apply it all over the place. The beautiful thing about Thai is that the 'system' is actually baked into the spelling so it makes it even easier ... not just memorising seemingly random tones for syllables like you do with Chinese.

I think maybe isaan language is based on lao that is why the tone in isaan is so different from thai tone because if learn lao the letter is different and also lao has a level on their letter like level 1 level 2 and level 3 so that is why maybe isaan use that tone according to lao

A lot of Thai Isaan dialects are closer to the Pakse Lao dialect. You can jump into my tool there and click through the different dialects and see how they shift. The cool thing about Lao is that people will usually speak their home 'version' of it wherever they travel - it's all Lao. If you look at the tone maps in my tool you'll see that Vientiane Lao is actually much closer to Northern Thai than Isaan.

It just 5 tones of Kaw คาว = fishy (smell) ข่าว = news ข้าว = rice ค้าว = a type of cat fish ขาว = colour white 5 Kao เคา = no meaning เข่า = knee เข้า = enter or get in เค้า = me, indication, token, outline เขา = moutain, them ..and 5 tone of every word, long and short some have meaning some not, it is quite easy 😂😂😂

Hi Stu, about ข ฃ ค ฅ ฆ i hear some people pronunce them as kHaa, while others pronunce them like the arabic "خ". are they both correct ?

More or less, yes. In linguistics, this is called "free variation" where either sound is valid. But to be understood by most Thai speakers, you want to pronounce them as kh.

It's the same sound in Thai. It seems like some younger people are undergoing a consonant shift from aspirated k to a fricative x for these letters.

ข, ฃ = This is a high tone letter ฃ: This letter is a dead letter, so there is no need to memorize it. ค, ฆ, ฅ = And this is a low tone letter ฅ: This character is almost a dead character because we hardly ever use it to write books.

The TTS needs the context because it's not good enough at picking up the tones so it uses the context instead.

Like Krungthep actual pronunciation should be Grungthep, Krabi should be Grabi, Kanchanaburi should be Ganjanaburi, Trang should be Drang, Koh should be Gok etc. I always refer to Thai script when mentioned road/town/jangwat's name.

linguistically it's actually unaspirated K as there's no G sound in Thai... see clips I've done in the past ... no such sound as G in Thai
