I wouldn’t say I like picking up bags of plaster or stucco. As soon as you grab and squish it together to get a good grip, all the excess Lye and silica become air-born.

Howdy Valkyrie, LOL, I know the feeling. When I started plastering many years ago, I wanted to be considered cool and not a wuss. So I didn't wear gloves for a few days. Goofy move, I couldn't open my fingers without the bleeding from the finger joints, plus they were like sandpaper, even too manly for me, as when I tried to sleep they keep sticking the covers, that was some annoying sh!t. Plus my wife at that time said, "baby, don't touch me with those sandpaper hands" ouch.💃 I only had to learn that lesson once. I slept with vaseline on my hands in sandwich bags for a week, then they were as good as new. Did the lye enter my bloodstream transdermally? Who knows, I was happy to open my hands again without the pain, plus I was young and didn't don't worry about stuff like whats was in my bloodstream besides blood.🍻

Lye will burn, eat, disintegrate stuff, hands, and face are no problemo for Lye to beat or eat up. A story, I was about 20, and going to a party, was dressed up and excited. But, my piece of crap car wouldn't start. I used jumper cables when I tried to attach them to my car battery my battery exploded, it sent battery acid all over me, I thought, damn, now I have to wash my face and hair, as I was in a hurry. Washed up fast, then stuck my friend's battery in my crap car. Then drove to the party. The next day, my shirt and pants had holes everywhere and were so beat up, I had to throw them out. I thought to myself at that time, man, good thing I took the time out to wash my face and hands, as I almost didn't.😉 That's what Lye in stucco also does, Lye is no joke and takes no prisoners.🍻 Show less

Glass beads from volcanoes instead of sand are just part of the reason. We were so busy to show some of the other windows that had been set already, which would have made for a much better example; Ops. Life of a plasterer, our objective is to finish a project without having to return.

YEAH 😬 according to witnesses who were on site it fail off into the mixer got dumped into the hopper then pumped thru the hose out the nozzle onto the scratch coat then darbed and hard floated into the brown coat😦😮💨 . Kirk, if you're looking for an alternative to sand/cement stucco, why not try lime/earth mortar? You simply get loam (clay + sand + silt), add fine, sharp sand if you got too much clay and then add 10% quicklime. You can add hay or synthetic fibre for some extra tensile strength. Earth mortar gets very hard by itself and adding 10% lime makes it even a little stronger and more water resistant and very capillary active (means that it keeps your walls dry by drying them out much faster). The main reason why I would recommend this to you is simply the cost. You can use this stuff to get some very thick scratch and brown coats. It spreads like butter, it's cheap and it floats like a dream if you get the amount of sand just right. To finish it off you can use a thin layer of much purer lime plaster with very fine or coarser sand depending on the finish you want. This system is not water proof but there is a reason for that: even though a very pure lime top coat is very water repellent, the magic quality and the reason why it has been used throughout all of history for millennia is because it keeps your walls dry. It don't matter how much you try to waterproof your walls, it doesn't work: water always find a way to get in the wall. And what happens when you trap the water inside the wall with a plaster that is waterproof? Bingo: delamination and cracking. This does not happen with pure lime plasters and it's the reason why people used it in the past.

Hey Dave, generally you attach a J trim vertically when you tie in stucco to any kind of wood siding. Z flashing is usually placed horizontally and countered with say for stucco, a weep screed.

What about the weep screed at the bottom just above the rood? What happened this time? Flashing the new roof without a weep is going to be a real hassle .

Morning Steve, good question, but I answered it in the video, The stucco currently is 1 and a half inches thick; thus, a 7/8 weep screed installed would have been buried and useless, The metal flashing installed there now goes up 4 inches and along the roof about ten inches. When the roofer removes this torch, he will apply another torch down, which will adhere to the metal roof flashing by the torch's down.

Good morning. As a rule, traditional stucco requires 28 days before painting. Although this kemset does not require 28 days, I believe within a week is okay. There are so many products on the market today that we can't even keep up with them. There are a few stuccoes that can be applied and painted within two hours.😉

Hi Kirk! Your videos are great! Love the family effort and it sounds like you may be Italian.🙂. Perhaps you could give this little Italian girl some advice? I'm trying to do a light stucco over an existing sixty-year-old exterior stucco. Upon your advice I bought the morflexx and repaired cracks.first. I also bought the weld Crete bonding. I'm trying to use the safest materials as possible. This Eco plaster sounds great and safe. Would it work in Maryland's environment and could I get it shipped here? Any advice and help would be so much appreciated!

Hello sweetie, thank you. Make sure you pressure wash first before the caulking? Apply the bonding agent a day or two before you apply the finish coat too. I would recommend La Habra, Western, Carsons or BMI finished stucco instead of pure lime as one I have no clue where you would find the pure lime and two it could cost up to a hundred bucks a bag here in this country. The La Habra cost just under 20 bucks they have portland and lime in them. They are comparable. Hi Kirk. I'm thinking now maybe perhaps patching and painting with an elastomeric stucco paint rather than doing a light stucco over the entire existing stucco. Which do you think would last longer? Are you against painting stucco for I know I have read some people are completely against it?

If a patch and paint, should the weld Crete be applied on the entire thing before or a different kind of bonding agent or primer before the paint? Also, wouldn't they have to wait days or weeks to paint after patching so it cures properly? Or should I bite the bullet and have it stuccoed and sealed? Nervous Little Italian girl! I went to the Kirk school of plaster and power washed the basement and brown/white coated the walls and it looks just like finished drywall. But good grief I didn't wear gloves and that finish coat is like acid.
