Hi Kirk, love watching your show. Been plastering for years and when we gotta strange finish to match we used to look around the house and gardens. We’ve dashed with reeds branches of bushes sacks and all sorts of natural things to match local workers. Keep it going, your tools in the u.s. are much better and more available than in u.k. and Australia. I love watching. We were always in too much of a hurry to get it on and finished as opposed to enjoying the skills we had learned. Regards from Perth Australia I m now 76 years old and still doing a bit. Don’t think I could get rid of my tools.

Greetings David Pears my fellow spread from Perth Australia, you're still a spring chicken, I have trowels older than you, Okay I don't. Plastering is new here in the USA about 170 years old, it was figured out and formulated in the UK, so you guys got real lime plaster there. We here have what is called a plateririzer, In the 40 years I've been plastering I still haven't figured out what the hell that means. But at the risk of sounding cynical, certainly it a by product of something, but much cheaper than lime.🤷♂️ 🍻😉 Cheers brother. I still have more research to do but think I can do this on the interior of my house?-since I don't want the grout lines showing on the walls and have been told putting up drywall will cause condensation/mold issues.
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Danny, for a young girl you are very bright.🤔 Indeed attaching sheetrock or drywall will end up molding if your walls allow any moisture in, with mold comes years of sickness and cost of probably more than your possibly paying for the home. I won't go into detail but it's known truth. I would recommend Sherwin Willaim primer and paint for the exterior, just in case it happens to allow moister in through the block walls. Sherwin William costs more than three times the cost of hardware stores, however it lasts years longer than most as it's elastomeric. A masonry primer and 2 coats of a quality Sherwin-Williams exterior paint will produce fantastic results and at a much lower cost. Keep in mind, for elastomeric paints to completely live up to its waterproofing specifications they need to be applied by spray methods and VERY thick coats ... Good morning Samir dude, these ways of getting mud on the walls are third world ways in which many people from other countries are not as fortunate as we are here in the USA. They have the skills and desires but lack specific tools or implements to make their projects easier on themselves. Thus they use imagination to still complete the projects. Much respect to these people who improvise as it takes much more effort, I prefer skill with specific tools and stucco/plastering trowels to burning out my strength and muscles any day. Often I see some of these videos where folks are working so hard and think, man, if I was there, I'd help them. Great video Kirk, I was going to ask you before if you had ever thrown mud at a wall, hahaha and then you just did it. That's how we do it in Brazil and Europe, the hawk and throwel seems more of an English and American technique. Throwing mud with a shovel or large mason throwel is good if you want it really thick such as in terracotta bricks. But the hawk method is much better if you want it thin and smooth or against that metal mesh you guys use in the US for wooden homes. I can't buy a hawk here but I made my own to use your technique sometimes, it makes less of a mess too. Gotta try the cheater next... and stay safe from the coronavirus.

@@StuccoPlastering Thanks Kirk, I recently completed about 120 ft of exterior plaster work. I noted quite a bit of micro cracks in the brown coat. I had kept the brown wet and covered in poly, but it cracked despite my efforts! The temps were extreme in Tulsa (97F ++) Maybe you have some advice to reduce cracking ..I was using Portland/ mason sand( sifted ) 1:2 ratio with an acrylic activator...
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Russ, with that kind of heat, the stucco drys too fast; thus, hairline cracks can be more likely to happen; they are harmless, just maybe annoying upon close inspection; paint should flood them if not, caulk them before painting. I've never heard of an acrylic accelerator or activator. What is it? As cementisish materials and acrylics, as a rule don't mix. Kinda like oil and water. 👨🏻🔬
@russsterns2656 Жыл бұрын
@@StuccoPlastering Hi Kirk, I meant activator, oops. In the old days we would mix Acro 60 to the Portland/sand mix for a foundation coating...Thanks for the clarification!!! Much appreciated!! I though flat work was the hardest thing I've done!! Plastering is definitely harder!!! Thanks for all the helpful advice.. We are starting a restoration project on a 5k 100 yr old building. The brick 🧱 is not so great, and the interior plaster was applied over these horizontally grooved ceramic blocks that are integrated into the brickwork. The para-pit courses are pretty much a joke...I was thinking of coating both inside and outside with what's called " Architectural Skin"....I can send a picture of common brick/ terracotta Masonry structure if you like.. Thanks, Russ S

Do you get rising damp over in the USA like we do here in the UK? Do you do the remedial work It would be good to see what products/mixes you use for damp walls Thanks from South wales
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good Evening DRC dude, most of the time the walls are dry, unlike South Wales, in the UK.🤔 Sometimes in the cold and wet winters here, I will mix the mud stiffer, and allow the first coat to set a bit longer before trying to apply the second layer. Or if the papers saturated with dampness and it's cold and cloudy like a witches tit. 😏 I'll add some accelerator to help embed/set the stucco into the stucco netting. A beautiful technique is to place the trowel on the edge so the stucco can breathe, thus whatever air is there will also set it faster. On edge means the trowel blade is facing the wall and your self. If you smooth apply it with your trowel flatly, this closes or seals the pores which make the stucco take forever to set. I'll explain it in an upcoming video Kirk and Jason Giordano, Bringing to all the most complete plastering encyclopedia ever created in the world online. By the plastering messengers of KZbin. Damp is such an issue that damp proofing is a separate trade. The wall ties corrode,dry rot which is common,and being in the UK,heavy salt contamination,that comes through and blows the skim off. Kirk- I noticed that new building code is requiring rigid foam insulation in between cladding and paper. As a result, stucco applications are now one-coat systems. In your experience, does this result in the same issues as an EFIS system?
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good Evening Stephen dude, this is far from a new plastering code or system, it's been done for over 50 years, it originated for the UK, it was called the Dry-Vit system. Of course, as it's effective many other companies have joined in with similar products. The moister barrier or paper goes on first to protect the plywood sheathing or substate, then the styrofoam-board, most foam boards these days have horizontal grooves in them than the stucco netting is attached to the foam board so that the stucco adheres. Again this is far from a new system, it's mainly used for taller building as its much lighter than a three-coat system. Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. I am aware the system isn’t anything new. Energy efficiency guidelines are requiring rigid foam in most new construction, lathe, and one coat. Therefore, one coat systems are used instead of three coat for weight savings and to compensate thickness of rigid foam. But my question is if this is the same as EFIS system and all the moisture intrusion issues associated with it vs traditional 3 coat over lathe?

@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Morning PCJ Plastering dude and my fellow plasterer from the UK. Excellent question. All cementitious finish plaster and acrylic stucco finishes have sand, 30/30 sand is for smooth finishes. It's the finest sand available. Fine sand is known as 30/30 sand, and you will also see these numbers written on the bags. Medium sand is called 20/30, and these numbers are also written on the bags. Heavy or coarse sand is termed 16/20, also written on the bags. Other popular finish coats such as Cason's, Western, Omega, just to name a few also go by the same numbers system. Sure It would be easier to just say at the material yards give me, fine, medium, or coarse finish bags for topcoats. However, for us industry experts, I personally look at the bags to specify the grit by the manufactures numbering system. Good Evening LJ dude, excellent question. Even though two coats are being applied, they are both 30/30 sand, the finest sand available for finish coats. Thus the slightest vibrations cause's stucco wall to hairline crack. For example, slamming a solid front door. Vibrations are like Krotonight to superman, not good. The most common reason for hairline cracks or any stucco finishes worst enemy a week to a month of rain, as the rain falls the homes lift a hair. When dryer conditions appear, viola, the houses settle, instant cracks, the excellent news is hairline cracks are just cosmetic. Good afternoon Ali dude, good question. However, the material I was throwing on applying is a cement plaster. As a rule, especially in the UK, plaster is a term for interior plastering or use. But in this country, few know the difference and even less care. Grout is usually for tile work, while the grout for cement block or brickwork is a type called common, which means it's strong as hell but challenging to apply or spread.
