I know this is a very old video and most likely wont get a response, but this channel is inspiring. I've been looking for a way to explain the I want travel/explore. I've never heard of overlanding or the concept of expeditioning being a for of travel. Again thank you. I'd love to be able to meet you guys next time I'm in MT. Just to get some insights and chat around the ideas of overlanding. I was also unaware of the gatherings you attended in a previous video. Those look very informative as well.

I've driven across the Denali Hwy 10 times in at least three different vehicles, from a '95 Hyundai Elantra to a decked-out burly '02 Tacoma. I've pedal-biked it three times, twice in summer, once in winter when there's no road, just a snowmachine trail. It's a beautiful highway that's usually in good condition, which is a relative statement, as it's almost always loose large gravel with very light deep dusty sand mixed in. In the Elantra, however, it only took 3.5 hrs to do the entire road from Cantwell to Paxson, 135 miles. Going off of the highway on the trails is where your 'overland' travel comes in, as it seems you found out. Absolutely one of the best drives in Alaska that almost anyone with any common sense and a moderately reliable vehicle can do. But, of course, it's Alaska, and you're on your own. Have you thought about the Canol Rd in the Yukon? Go there. And did you do the Taylor Hwy to Eagle? That is one of the most TV show worthy roads in Alaska, in my opinion. I've driven that one 36 times, as I used to live in Eagle. It's taken me anywhere from 2 hrs 40 min to 8.5 hrs to do the 160 miles from Tetlin Junction to Eagle. Thoughts of an Alaskan.

If you know or suspect you might be struggling on terrain while towing a trailer. Unhitch the trailer first, get the vehicle through/out, then winch the trail through on it's own.

I loved the Denali...mind you I was by my self in the Toyota 4x4 back in the 80s. As I mention in a previous video, I did this by myself with very little knowledge or anything other then the 4x4...meaning I was latterly living on the edge just a 4x4 and no winch or CB radio...hmmm.

Just an interesting Side note. During our Tanzania trip during the minor wet season we had the typical built up 8 passenger Toyota LC conversion rig which they ran Military 9ply tires on. Our outfit owned three vehicles and had three drivers total. During the off season they had contracts with researchers. Our driver explained that their vehicle of choice in Africa for wet season and water crossings was their Range Rover 2dr primarily because it was very light weight compared to the standard LC and especially what they call their 8 passenger conversion LC. The LC we had was a 2007 slab side imported from Japan then converted to 8 passenger in Tanzania. The engine was the current strait 6 turbo diesel very clean viewed as one of the cleanest diesels in Africa and during our two weeks we were running a two tank average of 25mpg US spec. Our driver showed us the log they keep all the drivers have a on going competition to see who can post the highest mileage average for a season. He said last year he won only by .25mpg HA HA. Sure makes my 93 4.6L gas J80 LC at 14mpg with a tail wind look like a fuel hog.

Very good, I've only just come across Expedition Overland recently and I've just watched all the Alaska/Yukon adventures and I'm immensely enjoying them so far. And It's really good to see some great 4wd products from Australia being used overseas and standing up to the punishment over there just as well as they do here. I didn't know anyone did this type of off roading in the states as I've only ever really seen rock crawling or mud bogging. It's kinda similar to 4wd touring in Australia where it generally involves more remote areas and very long distances. I really like seeing the Tacoma as it's something different and we don't have them over here or at least I've never seen one. Another thing I didn't know is you had 100 series Cruisers in America. Just one question why'd you go for petrol engines? I would of thought diesels would of been a better choice in almost every way unless they're not options in the states. I am very much looking forward to future episodes and your future adventures.

Favorite episode thus far. Don't know if you have discussed on previous pages or not, but why didn't you opt for bigger lifts on your rigs? It seems that an inch taller and 2" bigger tires would have got you through most of your recoveries and water crossings. Love the episodes guys! I respect what you guys are doing. Keep it up!

for us its a very fine balance between reliabilty and trail performance.. WE did what we thought was best in regards to keeping a vehicle as near stock in mechanics as possible for better performance for the many road miles and also for longevity to the vehicles reliability over the long run. Epic episode, just getting it done...Denali is amazing, and not watching this to be a critic, just enjoying, seeing how they get into and out of "stuff". What it takes to even go through that terrain, rivers, mud up to your ying yang..For me this shows how it can be done, if you chose to get that far into off roading carefully...not the YAHOO types. Breakages occur and are costly if you just dive in.

Love these videos, Cant help but notice you always take the harder route whenever there is a recovery to do. I would have dropped the trailer and used the winch before any other recovery method to avoid digging the truck in further. But it's never fun when it is easy and you guys are having a lot of fun :D Cant wait for the next one!

Love the videos! Only critique, the cruiser should have been aired down way more, that side wall had zero flex. Aired down to about 12-14 psi it would have walked up that little hill.

Alright, I'll give you that Snow Peak. For as much as they were carrying (and for how fat that Cruiser is to start with) they did alright. Still, the Xterra has more hp and torque than the Tacoma, and a better footprint for wheelin than the Tacoma, too. So, It was just nice to see it ripping around like it was a Sunday afternoon or something.

A better comparison would be the 4runner. I suppose you could make the point that the 4runner does not offer a manual trans anymore, but the 4runners are incredible trucks. In the end, it doesn't matter, its all subjective.

As much as I want a RTT, they seem to take up a crap load of room on the roof, I think I'll stick to my little 2 man ground tent that I erect on my Garvin Rack, saves room for more crap up top. Only so much room on my TJ :)

You comment about not wanting to go home after camping for so long, is the reason so many people stay in Alaska. There's no greater outdoors area, and no match for the camping experience. I regret leaving Alaska, (remedied here in a week as I scratch off two of my bucket list items, move back to AK and drive the AlCan Highway).

Should have run a block on the cruiser and run the winch cable back to the winch vehicle that way it would have been pulling from the middle of the cruiser and it wouldn't had problem getting it out

I can't believe I missed the Denali Hwy while I was up there!!! There were huge forest fires and pilot cars guiding drivers, so we bypassed it on our way back to Tok from Anchorage. LAME!!

I know I'm being an "armchair quarterback" here, but since weight is constantly an issue with the Land Cruiser, why not have the top tent and trailer on the truck? At the least have the top tent moved forward to put some weight forward, and perhaps store some stuff on the top forward instead of hanging off the back? Another thought is to move the tent from the top of the land cruiser to the trailer, and make it similar to bunk beds. :\

I think you guys have a great show here but based on wheeling experience from Colorado, Utah, Florida and Wyoming I do think a small 3" lift on your vehicles, some solid 33" tires like Nitto Trail Grapplers or Wrangler Duratracs would have been better and helped with traction especially in Mud because they'd clean better. Have you changed this for future trips or if you didn't why not? More for my knowledge than anything else and not knocking what you have accomplished.

While mud terrain tires would be a good choice for this expedition. General Tire sponsored us this year. We selected the Grabber AT2 with great results. Though they might suffer in mud, they where great for all the road miles we put on. about 10k on this trip. We would run on the grabber AT2's again on this trip.

This trip really inspires me to do something like this but I am not impressed with all of your wheelin skills. Stop tryin to ease through this soupy mess with all that weight, just GOOOO! Lock both ends and keep your momentum! That muddy hill wouldnt have been an issue if you came at it with a bit of speed.

That is a nice B2, Left hand command set up though.. Bad for long lining, ironic because LHC is intended to make long lining easier. But I've never liked A-Stars, they don't lift enough, nor do they lift enough at altitude. And they are way to twitchy. And its maximum gross weight is 4900lbs but max gross (Maximum Takeoff Weight) is including the weight of the aircraft, so in reality it can only lift 2500. But even then, they only lift that at sea level. A-Stars suck at altitude. Realistic lifting weight is about 1500lbs, as you have to include fuel amongst other things. Even the B3 is overly praised, the second it gets hot out at altitude you really can't lift much more then a B2. 315B Lama is truly the only way to go. It lifts 2500lbs, and it lifts it all day long anywhere from sea level to 15000ft regardless on temp. A B3, which lifts 3000lbs, can lift that up to about 5000ft and then it really preforms like a glorified B2. At 15000ft you can barely lift off, let alone lift your max gross.

I think the Nissan had it right with running Goodyear Duratrac's. Would have been a better choice for this type of terrain.
