I followed his examples in this and other videos to the letter to fix valve and case problems with my Bach model 198 trumpet. It now works pretty good, I still have some lapping to do on a new valve. The point of this comment is that no repair shop within 50 miles would touch my trumpet, and I've received valuable lessons on what to do. So, I'm on the way to restoring a beautifully playing trumpet

Thanks for your very informative videos! I have a Yamaha euphonium that seems to have this problem. I would like to try repairing it myself. What size ground casing mandrel I should purchase? Feree's website gives many different sizes but does not say which ones are for which instruments. Can you help? Also, can you tell me the correct size mandrel to purchase for Besson tubas? Thank you. And please keep producing all those excellent videos.

you could use a vernier caliper to measure the inside diameter of the valve. 6" digital calipers are not too expensive and it's a nice tool to have if you replace parts or repair instruments
@377559
@377559 4 жыл бұрын
@@pauls5745 Thanks for replying Paul. These mandrels must be exact. I have found that most calipers do not have sufficient precision to measure to the one thousanth of an inch reliably. Taking measurements from ground casing mandrels I do have shows that I am usually about 1-2 thousands of an inch out - even when I use my iGaging calipers. So I do not trust my own measurements.

Hello Fernandes, I made 2 of the mandrels when I was in college, but they are hard to make without the correct equipment. It is better to buy them from Ferree's Tools. Thank you for your question, Art

Any recommendations on where to obtain ground casing mantrels or any suggestions on possibly of making it, perhaps with support by (car) engineers.

You can get them from Ferree's Tools. You just have to know the exact size that you need. I have made two of them when I was in college, but you need special equipment that is very rare. I do not think that car people would have it unless they make pistons. Here is the link to Ferree's: ferreestoolsinc.com

Thanks for the video. A question. How would the mandrel get into the dented casing in the first place? I measured the OD of the piston to get the correct size but it would not slide into the casing. So do I need to get a size slightly smaller than the OD of piston?
@TheColorField
@TheColorField Жыл бұрын
The end of the mandrel is tapered smaller so it can get by small dents.

Very cool video. I have one question. I picture dents being concave (inside the valve). How does hammering the outside of the valve fix them? It seems like the hammer would push the dent in the direction it's already facing and have no effect.
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 жыл бұрын
Because the mandrel is the same size as the casing and it is made of steel, tapping on the dent causes the mandrel to push out the dent from the inside.

What a great video, however, I have been using this technique for my second valve and it helped somewhat but it seems I can't get in at the right angle to fully smoothen it out and it stil won't go all the way down or it gets stuck. Do you have any advice for the doing the middle valve specifically?

What kind of clearance should the valve have in the cylinder? I have a old Sousaphone and 2 of the cylinders are out of round. The valve measures .975". What size mandrel should I get? .976 or .978?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop Жыл бұрын
That is hard to answer without taking some more measurements. It depends on how loose the valves are. The .976 will probably fit in there with no problem. It may be too loose though. There is a good chance that the .978 will not fit. It would be better to have it a little too loose than not go in at all, so I would go with the .976. I hope this helps.
