Student Loan Forgiveness for People with TPD

I found several inaccuracies or missing info: When I look at the gov page for the doctor note eligibility, it says you qualify if you have had the condition for 5 years OR will have it for 5 years. That’s past tense that’s included. Also they aren’t saying you are completely unemployable, just that the condition severely affects your ability to be “gainfully employed “. This refers partly to consistency in which you can work. Stephen Hawking was considered TPD but he had an illustrious career. So it doesn’t mean you have to admit you can never do or be anything one day. But if your mental and/or physical condition has you screwed you should be able to get this discharge. Also I heard they will only end the monitoring period for people in the VA system.

I just received a letter from Nelnet. It says since I am eligible for TPD my loans will be automatically discharged on 6/6/2022. There is no federal tax on discharged student loans at this point.. However, some states consider TPD as income.. Ask a tax pro. There is a 3 year post discharge monitoring period.. You must report back to DOE/nelnet if you change address or phone #. . You receive a request for I documentation of annual earnings. Or you receive a notice from SSA that you are no longer TSD ELIGIBLE or that your review will no longer be the 5yr or 7yr review period indicated in your most recent SSA notice.. So basically if want your loans discharged, ….. You do nothing..

Thank you. Nice knowing that this also covers direct stafford loans. The TPD website doesnt go into detail about which loans. It only says William D Ford loans. Stafford loans fall under this

I see my loans forgiven last year. Recent, I check again. See message “Next payment due 4/12/2031” but loan balance $0. What does this mean? Also message say “Discharged with Conditions”. What does this mean. Thank you for ASL.

What if I have a condition that keeps me from working full time, like I am sick twice a week which keeps me from working a full time shift but I had FMLA to be considered a full time at work. Can I qualify for this forgiveness?
