Joshua no she’s getting her debt forgiven because she’s classed as permanently disabled. It’s a 3 year period that she can’t work. If she goes back to work during that time then the full debt and interest returns. Otherwise if she has treatment and needs the 3 years or more to recover she doesn’t have to pay the $70+k at all.

Take 3 years off, then enjoy not having student loans. It'll be rough living on $1600 a month over that time, but making 42k a year with 75k in student loans you'd basically be doing that anyways. At least this way you'll get to spend the time with your kid.

If she's as disabled as she says just take 3 years off and get debt free in 3 years. Which would be about the same time (give or take her savings) if she still went back to work with a 40k bookkeeping job. Like work or take 3 years to heal while getting your debts paid off doesn't seem too bad to me imo. Why would you take it just to get off months later I dont understand that part?

I'm actually in that 3 year forgiveness program also due to a disability. But what they don't tell you is depending on your actual case and health evaluation, those 3 years can switch to 5 or even 7 years so I'd be careful in just thinking it's only for 3 years. I'm still waiting on my response oif they'll change my time 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Ok, I believe now I understand how it works but please help me confirm my understanding; I have a 100% service-connected disability through the VA but I am determined, employable, so if I take a loan, graduate and eventually return to work my loans are not forgiven, right? Something he didn't touch on is the effect on her income taxes for the year in which the debt is forgiven.
