A very good video can be to have a professional sax player try a beginner's sax and then have a beginner sax player try a professional sax.
@benoitvigneault961
@benoitvigneault961 7 жыл бұрын
The answer is that a professional sax player will make the beginner one sound good but the bigginer one will not see a difference between both. The only reason why a beginner will buy a pro one, it's because he doesn't want to spend money on maintenance because the mecanism is better quality and still. Do not spend your money on a pro one if you don't play at least 3 hours a day for 5 years.

"Pro" is a bit of a misnomer. Different models are better suited to playing different types of music. With some horns you get those whispery lows that some people like.. Others you get a bright big sound. There are lots of changes in the past 80 years, and they are all for the better. The main reason people buy "professional" horns, is that they think it will improve their play. Or, they really want their instrument to look good - so they have engravings, nickeled keywork, blue springs, whatever. If you buy into the whole resonance/intonation accessory/design nonsense, you're just asking to be taken advantage of by vendors. They want to sell higher cost items, because it nets them more profit. A 180$ Mendini horn is going to earn them what, 40$? A 6000$ Yanagisawa is going to make them a hell of a lot more. Blue steel springs are the same as stainless steel springs, it's aesthetic. People have already tested this by swapping out springs randomly on their horns and the play is exactly the same. You've got these sellers saying that this 800$ ligature and 2500$ neck, and 0.05mm larger bore size is going to change your sound. No. You change your sound. Cannonball played amazing on a King Super 20, and he'd sound just as amazing on a used 80$ modern Chinese horn. Now, I'm not saying that the "cheap" instruments are better. It's just that the very inexpensive ones often have poor workmanship and low quality materials, poor pad sealing, etc. So those will require more maintenance than a reputable/high quality instrument.

As a saxophone player collector teacher and repair tech of almost 40 years I can answer that ...a professional will most likely have a richer sound on a pro horn. Than on a student line instrument, but a beginner won’t sound one lick better playing a pro instrument , in fact they will possibly sound worse, as the intonation on student instruments is adjusted in such a way as to accommodate the lack of knowledge students have concerning intonation as they play.

I recently upgraded from a Jupiter Student Sax that I've had for about 8 years to the Yamaha 875ex, and man, what a difference. I love the feel of the Yamaha in comparison to the Jupiter. The upper and lower register comes out so much easier. It was very expensive (I got a good deal on a used one and it was still $3,300), but 100% worth it.

Nice comparison Mike. Some people have commented saying they like the YAS-280 more and I think I understand why. I have a YAS-280 and find it a very good student sax. I have been playing for about 8 months and I found that it is well made and I think with care it will last a long time before it needs any repair. The key sounds of the pads closing might be a little noticeable with it, but its better than other student alto saxes I have tried. Its also a bit lighter than other alto saxes, which means younger students can play it without it being a bit heavy. I am 30 and use a Saxholder harness and barely feel the weight of it on my shoulders when playing, however, having a more heavier sax with more dense high quality metal might give you a more rich sound than you get from the YAS-280. I like the tone you get from the YAS-280 as its clear and you can basically play any style you want on it and I haven't found it hard to mostly keep the notes in tune, but I still have a little issue getting a few middle to higher notes from being a little bit sharp (more practise and long tones should help). This is good because when starting out, you may not know what style you want to play so having a sax you can learn on and having a clear sound will help you decide as you progress playing and finally find a tone you like and can play it consistently that way. Higher end saxophones like the 875EX are designed to produce a certain tone which won't suit every player. Some saxophones will sound brighter, others warmer, some will be have a sound better for Jazz/Blues/Funk while others may be more suited to classical playing because of their warmer tone but that doesn't mean you couldn't play anything on any saxophone if you want as Simon Bates ,the UK saxophone player, has a gold plated Yamaha 875 alto and tenor and an soprano and doesn't play classical music and gets a very good pop/jazz/funk type sound on them. The 875EX has a smooth, rich warm sound which is great if you want to play classical music where you need that kind of tone, but with Jazz , pop, funk etc.. styles you might want a more brighter sound and maybe way people say they like the sound of the 280 more, as it has a brighter, more clear sound, although if you change the neck to one of the other Yamaha necks on the 875, and get a brighter sounding mouthpiece, you could get a brighter more projecting tone, in this video however, I do think Mikes playing on the 875EX is a bit muffled sounding.

I agree that the 280 sounded better for jazz. He could've altered the sound by swapping the 875 neck with the 280. Dirty little secret is that all Yamaha body tubes and tonehole placement are the same. The 280 does not have engravings, MOP key touches, and (I believe) is lacking a high F# like most other student Yamahas. The keywork is cheaper to produce, but is extremely functional. Ergos are totally subjective. The talk about resonance is total bs as the saxophone does not work as a resonance chamber. The 875 neck receiver IS a superior design insomuch that it provides a more reliable seal between the neck and the receiver. I don't know why weight was brought up as the fancy cutouts the 875 has is offset by the ribbed construction vs the post on body of the 280. Meaning that the latter is the lighter horn. They're both great tools. One has improved cosmetics and some mechanical improvements. If it's worth the extra money to someone, by all means get it. Keep in mind that not even Yamaha advertises the 280 as a "student" horn. It's their "basic" model, and that's a much more intellectually honest adjective. They're both really great horns.

Heck, as a player and a repairman I'd be looking more at the workmanship and quality of how things fit. As for differences and sound yes they're there, but whether I play some kid's Bundy or my Mark 6 I basically still sound like me. I've occasional demoed horns at stores for customers. They don't always hear a difference. The experienced player should pick something well built, he like the sound, and feels comfortable playing on. A student's needs are much the same. Problem for students is they have no skill or experience to tell whether the problem is the horn or them. As fellow repairman described knowing whether " it's the arrow or the Indian"

If you watch him carefully, his fingers are much more comfortable on the 875, and that's a personal thing. Also, he's playing very quietly. When you play louder, and go for a bright sound, these differences disappear quickly. They are both extremely nice saxophones. The question is do you want to be able to play bright/loud, or do you want that low breathing whisper. A lot of guys do this on the higher end horns, old selmers, etc, because they can..

i play a Yamaha 82Z tenor, a Jupiter SemiPro Alto 687 if not mistaken and a Yanagisawa S900 Soprano. Its really stupid to spend money on pro level horns if you are not a real professional. When I refer to professional, I really mean making money out of it. It's wiser to buy a cheap instrument and invest on a good mouthpiece and develop your tone. Real Pros play on junk instruments and they sound like beyond this planet. Cosmetic artwork? come on! don't empty your wallet for it. What I am trying to say is that... buy a cheap horn for start... keep away from pro lines. Only go pro if you feel like it's your life else it's a waste of money.

I agree, however, when it comes to people who have played for plenty of years (which I'll roughly say maybe 10+?), there comes a point where a student saxophone is no longer necessary but a pro line is still beyond reach. This is where I suggest purchasing an intermediate make for the warm sound of a pro but near the price of a student. Just my opinion, I agree with your claim nonetheless.

Student, intermediate and professional = marketing. There is no such thing as a professional horn. They're all saxophones that must be made within the scientific dimensions necessary for a sax to play correctly. They vary in extras and quality and even there not by much when a reputable company is involved. As far as sound is concerned, it's all subjective, different horns sounding different shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but trying to say the sound of one is professional in quality and of another is student in quality is nonsense. The sound is more a function of the player, the mouthpiece and the reed, much less the horn. The likes of David Sanborn, Ernie Watts and Gerald Albright for example are about as professional as you can get. Do you really think they would sound any less professional if they stuck their mouthpiece and reed setup on a student model horn? If a horn with no name that costs $500 makes you say WOW! when you play it, that's your pro horn. Save the remaining $3500 for supplies and routine maintenance, that should be enough to keep it going for the rest of your life as you strive toward making listeners say WOW! when they hear you play. I kept my Yamaha 23 for 20 years before moving on to something new.
@mauricioalonso2157

I still play my YAS 23 after 15 years and I havent found the sax that I want to replace it with, but the main difference between shit horns and pro horns is the quality of construction and the materials involved. Even a factory like yamaha uses very different metals on their student and pro line. I'm repairing saxes now and checking my YTS 62 and my dad's YAS 62 I see huge differences in constructions compared to my 23, much bigger than the quality touches and engravings. The design is more efficient on the better saxes, with some complex parts that the 23 solves with a simple mechanism, that needs mantainance constantly, the key cups on the 23 are of a lower quality metal rather than brass as the pro saxes and a few other small things that when adding up to the general better metal of the hole horn, the better design (yes, they are diff even in size and tone hole placement), the extra keys, balancing pinky finger keywork, give you the pricing. I'm not blown away by any of that, but when repairing and trying to keep up with other horns, a lot more work is needed on the student models, and this is a Yamaha, a very good horn overall, don't make me start with chinese things... Those saxes shouldn't be allowed to exist.
@qq-hk2sq
@qq-hk2sq 7 жыл бұрын
I agree with quality differences and also feel that is more an aspect of durability, not sound quality and even less a means to distinguish a sax as student, or professional, given that players of all levels need a reliable horn. The technology/quality of horn building is at its peak now. The only way to justify multi thousand dollar price tag is to replace functional common metals and finishes with more expensive (Gold, silver plating, premium alloys) that have near impossible to detect by the naked ear differences in sound to the listener. I also have a Chinese made horn as a backup that is not perfect in build quality but is close and more importantly an outstanding player despite. "don't make me start with chinese things... Those saxes shouldn't be allowed to exist." Be careful, I understand Sax.co sells the Buffet 400 that is proudly made in China. Several thousand dollar horns have their place in the hands of those who can afford them and feel they need them for whatever reason. Otherwise a properly manufactured horn is going to sound proper regardless of what metal it's made of and until one can consistently tell the difference between a student model horn being played vs. a so called pro horn, blind folded, there is no such thing. Only a variation in build characteristics. No offense intended and I do appreciate very much what you have done here, I just dislike some aspects of marketing.
@mauricioalonso2157
@mauricioalonso2157 7 жыл бұрын
No offense taken and I should be more specific to my chinese saxes comment. I know that there are good and great chinese saxes, they can make an awesome sax for thousands of dollars and they do in fact, my problem is with those inexpensive few hundred bucks instruments that have SO many flaws in construction, from posts raised with few millimeters of tin, screws with 2 turns tops and sometimes not even the right length, pads raised with cardboard or carton and glued with low quality glue and not even properly glued and more problems than solutions. Sure, they sound, and some sound very well, but in the end they are a loan that you are making because fixing it it's going to eventually cost you more than 2 of those saxes, unless you hit the jackpot and find the ones that have little to no problems. Here we use the term "chinese sax" to refer the shitty ones, a buffet is a buffet, the others have brands such as knight, parquer (yes, spelled like that), lumase, ocean, etc...

Hmmm the reflectivity on the mouthpiece & also maybe the lig appears different? I have used student, intermediate & pro saxes, and although definitely prefer the pro, the differences are not proportional to the price point. In terms of sound the reed, mouthpiece, then neck affect the sound the most & also the tonal concept has a huge effect. May be the best way is to got to the shop & try them out with your own reed/mouthpiece? I'd take a recorder too & A/B them as often what you think you hear is different for the listener. Other factors are the ergonomics of the key layout versus your physical makeup and the projection for the predominant performance situation. More closed action will give a quieter sound. The spring balance can be adjusted to suit, as they are often setup with hard springing to ensure the pads don't stick. That said Yam & Yani are wonderful saxes with great ergonomics and you'll be very unlikely to regret buying one :-) Can't beat the range of saxes there!

It's mostly the mouthpiece and your own technique, soul and style. Much like guitar, once the instrument is of acceptable playing quality it becomes a thing of preference.... Blowing (excuse pun) a fortune on something with 'professional' on the tag won't make you one. For example here I think I preferred the sound of the student model, it's just a different timbre.

The sound of a sax is 90% the player, another 5% is the mouthpieces / Reed combination and the last 5% is the condition of the sax. No leaks, everything is adjusted right, a good player who know his/ her way around the sax and can use alternate fingering for speed can make any sax sound like a proffessional sax.

I upgraded my daughter to the Yamaha 82Z. Wow, what a difference. For classical it is coupled with the Selmer concept It is so warm and smooth. In fact her private instructor whom teaches sax at the university says she has better tone then most of his students, and she's 13. For jazz, she uses a Theo Wanne Durga blue. That resonates too good, that her conductor wants her to use other mouth pieces as not to blow other musicians away.... So, bottom line, there is much more than the instrument itself, but you can't beat quality pro models with their craftsmanship and mixture of the correct metals for that warm rich sound.

You break the differences down to "aesthetics" and "tone quality and response". Another very significant difference between models is the engineering. Cheaper models are more likely to have sloppiness in pivots, sloppiness where pivot rods go through supporting pillars, less accuracy in levelness of tone holes, and a lower quality in the pads. These issues, unless a technician corrects them (and that could be very expensive!), results in considerably less reliability, hence higher maintenance costs. Also, you talk about "denser metal" and that being superior. That would fly in the face of well established acoustic science. You also mention blued steel springs being superior to ordinary steel. That is simply not true. They re the same steel. The blue is oxidation from the tempering process, which offers a little additional rust protection. An alternative is stainless steel. Some stainless steel is inferior to steel, but in recent years we have had available superior alloy stainless steel which behaves exactly the same as blued steel, except that it does not rust, and is less likely to break.

Generally Yamaha's tend to be catered towards classical musicians, so the professional model horns will generally attempt to assist and produce a classical tone and sound, if you were to hear a professional cannonball vs. a student cannonball you would hear the same level of differences but the professional cannonball will produce a better jazz sound. And this is not to say all yamahas and all cannonballs are for classical music and jazz, but rather in my experience most of the yamahas i have played produced a more classical tone.

I'm sure the uploader will respond, but if I may: advanced models will last much longer due to the higher grade, heavier, and thicker metals used. This goes for practically all (metal) instruments.

Kinda "what he said"! But depending on the level of player, sometimes you can stick with an intermediate horn for the rest of your life and be totally happy with it, so it maybe something that you'll have to let him try.

Some people are saying the student model sounds better for jazz and the pro model for classical, and I think that may come down to the professional model being a bit easier to control with a more even tone. I've always found my Yamaha YAS-23 student model to be a bit more brash and harsh when compared to my King Super 20 professional model, despite the King's reputation for being a bright instrument. This harshness and unevenness may have been compressed in post production or just not picked up on the mic. Just my two cents.

I hear some minor differences between the 2 saxophones, but they're very minor differences. The basic core sound is pretty much spot on between the 2 saxophones. It's the player behind the instrument that makes all the difference in the world.

I have a 1983/84 Yamaha-23 and I am seriously thinking of making the leap to a YAS-82Z. The YAS-23 does everything I ask of it in the context of what I'm doing, but the sounds out of that 875EX are undeniably richer.

I have a Thomann TAS 350 which is a low price instrument comparing it with the Yamaha. My Thomann has all the extras that the professional Yamaha gives you except the wider neck screw. The Thomann offers even more than the Yamaha does, e.g. the adjustable keys. I was planning to replace my Thomann with a Yamaha sometime, but now I am unsure. I am not convinced to do that after seeing/hearing this. Suggest you to check out the Thomann saxos first :)

Hi Mike, we have an intermediate Yamaha tenor 480, how does that rate with regards tone, surely tone is about the player and their technique. Refined tone? The factories whether in Japan or Indonesia still have similar quality control. Of course the more expensive sax is softer but is that to do with reed and mouthpiece.
@saxworldwide
@saxworldwide 7 жыл бұрын
The 480 is similar to the 280 as far as tone is concerned, it has the same neck, body bow and bell. You're right, the tone is mainly down to the player and their technique - put a professional player on any sax and they'll sound great either way. When you play a more expensive saxophone, you soon realise that tone is just one element, it's also about the way it feels when you play it. We find that you can perform advanced techniques a lot easier on a more superior instrument leading to a much more enjoyable experience.

It's no surprise that a shop is going to talk about "resonance this and resonance that" which is all bro science at this point. The budget model (refuse to call it student, another marketing ploy) might very well sound better for many players if it matches their mpc/reed setup and playing style better. What are actually significant differences are the level of preparation the horns get from the factory, the adjustable bumpers, the extensive hand engraving and so on. The necks on the top model are also hand made which is a time costly procedure, but doesn't guarantee that it will be a better neck than the cheaper one.

The only difference is that I see is that the two instruments were made at different places and parts are a little bit more high quality. Being a saxophone enthusiast and player for more than 20+ years a great saxophone player can be able to make great intonation off of either one of these instruments. The question is do you need a professional instrument? My answer to that is maybe if you play in a professional band or if you are an artist like Kenny G, Dave Koz, etc. then I can see yourself spending the thousands of dollars for professional instrument but if you're novice like me you can get by paying less than $1000 and get a very good mouthpiece if your embouchure is right which can make any instrument sound good from the student level all the way to the Pro. I would be really blessed to have a pro instrument but I really don't need one. I do very well with my beginner (student) instruments both of them being over 10 years old and sound just as good as any professional instrument.

I have never owned or even played a student saxophone before two years ago, and can definitely hear a difference in quality in this video. But I did buy a cheap student tenor saxophone and to my ears it does not sound too bad next to my more expensive Selmer saxophone. this video has encouraged me to buy a student soprano SAX. I think that once you get a good mouth piece and can tolerate the stiffer fingering it's almost as good as to my ears
@mauricioalonso2157
@mauricioalonso2157 7 жыл бұрын
The thing with sopranos is the intonation in high registers, it's bad even on the "best" saxes by consensus, the yamaha custom and Selmer serie III. So I advice caution with going for really cheap soprano saxes, I do agree that a good student sax can bring results as good as a pro sax, I play an student alto and a pro tenor and bari, but sopranos are tricky.

I'm not saying to buy 3k dollars instrument, but be sure to really test it, I have a friend that got a really nice korean soprano for little above 500 USD, barely used, a real bargain. As a general rule, spending 1000 USD should get you a well built sax, with good intonation and durability.

Great comparison Mike. Man would I love to run amok in your showroom! Yamahas are good horns, just wish they would switch to pads that aren't so prone to sticking. I played a TYS-82Z tenor for a year but replaced it. Playing a YAS-275 alto now- nice but will probably upgrade to pro. It won't be a Yamaha. Great horns but a bit too focused and lacking character. On the other side, incredibly free-blowing and nice keywork.

Amish Shrestha personally I would recommend starting with a good quality, properly adjusted student or intermediate saxophone. Pro horns in many cases are a bit more resistant and harder to play in some respects - but as you develop your chops, you are rewarded with a greater range of sound and dynamics to work with. FWIW I studied classical sax to a reasonable level and played mostly Selmer horns. Now I'm more of an occasional player and don't do anything especially demanding and I find the entry level Yanagisawa horns perfect for me, e.g. AWO1. These seem very popular, along with the likes of Yamaha 62 etc with adult weekend warriors like me.
