Outstanding video. Being 64 I saw the bull crap way the soldiers were treated. They never got the respect they deserved nor did their weapons. Excellent to have you do this series. Keep up the good work.

Joined during Vietnam and this fine weapon, was the first pistol I ever shot in the US Army in AIT. CLASS OF 72. and I've carried a 1911, ever since. My preferred sidearm. I'm looking forward to watching other videos. BTW, this was the standard weapon issued on armor vehicles. TANKS. Basic training consisted of the M16/M16a1, M60 machine gun, M203/M79 Grenade Launcher, Law Rocket launcher, claymore mine. And the use of DET CORD. AIT ARMOR SCHOOL, was the 1911, M3/M3A1 sub gun, M85 machine gun, M73, coax machine gun, M105 cannon.

I got to thinking about the idea of the magazine base plate and did some checking. Looks like a piece of .45acp brass will do the same thing.

My dad carried a 1911 in Nam, along with his M79. He said he only killed 3 VC with the 1911 and it was at eyeball distance.

Nice video. You hit all the major points, but forgot about one armed service that carried this weapon in Vietnam...The United States Coast Guard. Many Coasties carried the M1911A1 on missions in Nam, which mainly consisted of combat vessel boardings, patrols, or combat fire support missions. I was one of the last Coast Guardsmen to fire the M1911A1 as a 19 year old right out of boot camp. As far as I could tell, that range session in Oct. 1989, was the last time the weapon was used in the Coast Guard. I have always been proud to have caught the tail end of that legendary firearm.

I carried one of these for a little while as a US Army lieutenant during the mid 80s. I served in the 4th ID in Colorado; we were one of the lowest priority active divisions for new equipment so even though the M9 was being phased in during that time, we never got them. In fact, almost all of our weapons were Vietnam War era. I even wore the old steel pot helmet instead of the newer Kevlar ones that were also being introduced at that time. I was jealous that other divisions were getting the new stuff and we were not, but the older equipment still worked just fine, actually. Glad I can say I carried an M1911 instead of an M9. Today I own an M1911; I don’t own a Beretta 92. Nuff said.

@@seancssu I was 17 and new to the M60. I put a metal clip on wrong after cleaning the M60 and when my rifle platoon attached uphill in a live fire exercise the trigger group came off as I got to the top of the hill. I was not able to fire and had to go find the parts. I found all but one part and had to write a report of the loss. Not a way to impress my peers in 1980.

@@branned oh no! 😂 well those stories are a lot funnier during training than in a warzone! Here’s a question for you, what’re your thoughts on the ar15/m16 becoming America’s most popular rifle? Back in the 80’s it was still uncommon to see many people owning one, now it’s the default. Thank you for your service and your story! 🪖 🇺🇸 I’ll be sure to check all my pins

Those D batteries aint no joke! I made a club with some in my boot sock for some guys that were pullin a blanket party on my suicidal bunkmate. When they came to beat the kid I beat the shit out of them with those batteries and they never fucked with that kid again. He survived had a family and did quite well in the Marine Corps.

Me being 6’1 and 224 I hope to god I meet the criteria of who could NOT go in those tunnels as a tunnel rat.. Ive read stories about booby trapped tunnels that would flood full of water or lead to venomous/ poisonous reptiles.. not sure how the men who went in there with just a 1911, flashlight and a knife managed to squeeze their massive balls through those small tunnels..

One interesting fact is that the 1911 wasnt actually chambered for 45ACP. As you mentioned, ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. That is the name of a pistol. The round is technically the 45 Automatic.

As small as I am (5’10” 115 lbs.) I sure would have been a tunnel rat. That would have sucked as those things were often trapped with explosives, spikes and I’ve even heard they used poisonous snakes.
