Dan McBride is the WWII vet who I had the closest relationship with aside from my own grandfathers. He was always so generous with his time and his loss will always be felt by myself and his other friends at the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team. One of my favorite stories revolved around his famous 1911. A pistol that was predestined to belong to a member of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd PIR, of the 101st Airborne!
Dan McBrides experiences in the first few hours of D-Day would lead to Dan using an American folding stock M1 Carbine, a captured German STG44, and finally a captured German Lugar which he ended up trading for his beloved 1911. I will never hold another 1911 without thinking of my dear friend, Dan McBride.
Keep your knees in the breeze, Airborne, and I will see you on the Drop Zone.

Thanks, for sharing this lovely story, you don't get many of these kinds of stories any more, unfortunately. I decided to leave this comment just to let you know that in a recent film I've made, one of the characters had taken some inspiration from Dan's story, there's a scene where he comes across a gliderman and trades off his Luger for a 1911. Amazing story once again, and keep history alive!

I always find it weird that none of my family went to war I desperately tried to join the military when i was 19 I had a recruiter lost weight stopped doing drugs(past all my drug tests) Studied for the test Just to get to the office to sign the papers & be told they couldnt take me Few weeks later there's a whole bunch of things on the news announced that if any illegal immigrants joined the military they would get a citizenship I was so upset that my country denied me somebody who was born and raised here their whole life who loves this country red white and blue pumps through my veins But accept people that just came here

Great story about a 101st airborne vet you had such a close relationship to. I will definitely be passing on the story to my reenactment group and other people.

WE owe A LOT to the Old Guard. Like Dan, they are almost all gone. We remember the hard work and the sacrifice of these men and women and honor them with that ten extra minutes at work, giving a hand for no reason, giving maximum effort to your family and friends. It's what I learned from My Dad. He served in the War, Korea and early Vietnam. Not a day goes by I don't miss him, or My Mom. I smile because, these Men raised their kids to stand up and be the best. These Warriors are All at the Valhalla, swapping stories, watching and waiting on us. I cheerfully give my best every day and I tip my hat to them. R.I.P. Dan. Thanks for passing on the knowledge!

I had the honor to meet him several times over at D-Day Conneaut. I have a photo of him I took back in 2018, along with other WWII vets who were able to attend.

I’ve met him. He came to Fort Campbell a few years back when his film came out and had an assembly with us from 1-502nd. We shook hands and took photos afterwards, and it was a great experience to have a WWII 101st veteran come and talk to current Active duty 101st members. A piece of his Parachute and a copy of his jump school certificate are currently on display at 2nd BCT Brigade building.
