A cable television viewer’s guide to translating the “Protester” Okie Doke. There are several tools of critical analysis that can empower you to identify BS, propaganda, positioning, talking points, and nonproductive reporting in your news programming about the Gaza protests. 1. When guests are presented to offer insight and analysis of a news event, think about their title and background. For example, are they current or former members of law enforcement? Would a person with such a background be expected to be biased? Would you feel comfortable being stuck in an elevator with them? Are they the kind of people you would take advice from? 2. “Outside agitator.” If those words are used to describe a protest event, observe whether there is any inquiry, questioning, or reporting about who the outside agitators are. What groups are they attached to? Is there video or eyewitness reporting on them? How many are there? What are their motives? Who said they exist? Do they really exist? Or, is their supposed existence a pretext to use force against students? Remember, facts matter. 3. Does the reporting that you are consuming focus more on the tactics of the protesters or the underlying conditions that motivated the protest? 4. Has the news reporting provided you enough information that you can explain what the protesters believe they can accomplish and why they believe protesting is necessary? If there are counter-protests, has your news reporting equipped you with the ability to articulate their position? 5. Breaking a university window with no person injured is considered a “violent” act. If that is indeed true (and it isn’t) dropping a 1500-pound bomb in Gaza breaks a lot of windows -- and people too. And, a lot of bombs were dropped, so there’s that too. Does your reporting impute a sense of balance and proportionality about the protest and the conditions it seeks to remediate? How many windows were broken in Gaza? Compare and contrast. 6. Is your news reporting sometimes petty and silly? For example, did it actually compare the tragedy of students missing a graduation walk (a thing that can be rescheduled) with the avoidable killing of tens of thousands of innocents in Gaza - with the support of our country? 7. Does your news reporting unerringly include the extraneous commentary that “according to polls, the genocide in Gaza is not the most important issue for young people, it is abortion rights, etc..?” Do you feel that such a gratuitous statement seeks to diminish the relevance of the genocide or of the protests? Is it insulting that they are blithely telling you that they think you don’t consider starving and bombing innocents with your support is important to you? 8. This is crucial: Does your news reporting include a quasi-subliminal subtext that protesting Israel’s behavior equals antisemitism? Does it leave you with the impression - or does it fail to resolve the possible misimpression -- that a crowd of protesters is exhibiting antisemitic behavior or speech without factual reporting to that effect? I love my Jewish brothers and sisters. And I love Palestinians just as much. If you’re an antisemite, you are my enemy. And to be clear, I consider Jewish counter protesters that attack peaceful protests of Israel’s governmental actions to fuel the perception ‘questioning behavior equals antisemitism’ - those people are also antisemites, in all practicality. They accomplish the same end: Increasing the worldwide supply of enmity toward Jews. On October 8th, I wrote this about Hamas: “We Black people suffered more oppression, more dislocation, more holocaust than Hamas and we did so for much longer, yet we never found depravity as the answer. I have lots of concerns about Netanyahu and Israel’s past behaviors, but the only appropriate sentiments and words for this moment are that I am with the Jewish people and the Palestinians.” Israel’s government, and many of its settler colonialists taking land are wrong. I’m glad to see the protests because I see no other path toward stopping the genocide. I believe that Netanyahu is playing with matches in a room full of gasoline. I resent the unalterable fact that, whether by intention or hardheaded stupidity, he wields the power to widen the war and to drag America further into it. MSNBC is not doing good work on covering this story. Antonia Hylton has done some great reporting. She always does. She’s an outstanding journalist and could easily be a primetime host. A few others have done some good reporting from the ground, but overall, the network is doing D minus work. Work that has the appearance of being directed by someone. If this is rehearsal for how to handle Chicago, Trump approves. The least enthusiastic voter is the voter that believes their voice doesn’t matter.

Students felt "uncomfortable". Boy, things have changed since my years at university. 12,000 of my fellow anti-war demonstrators were arrested this very day in Washington DC in 1971. A year earlier, as of this Saturday, unarmed students were shot dead by Ohio National Guard at Kent State. Today, police come in because half the area of a football field is occupied by shouting students. Absurd. 😢

One of the main differences between the Vietnam war era protests and the Gaza is that during the former the protesters were against the US government and the Universities that were in any way supporting that war effort. There was no predominantly student vs student element involved. The student protestors of the Vietnam era were not an intimidation factor to large groups of their fellow students. The Gaza war protesters have in many cases included an element that causes intimidation of their fellow students; specifically the Jewish students on campus. This is due to the one sided nature of the protests and the unwillingness to clearly call out the atrocities of the other side and the need for Hamas to release hostages and surrender those responsible for the Oct. 7th atrocities.

@Nymeria0 define "many". Many is an intentionally vague term used when people either don't have the data or the data doesn't support their argument. I've also lived in college cities and towns, and unless the school was built and planned on an empty lot from the beginning, then it's not separate from the town. The quad is just a public park. Classroom and admin buildings intermingle with businesses and private residential buildings. Walking through the campuses of Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, BU, NYU, UNC, you often can't tell if a building is part of the school or something else if it doesn't have a school placard on the entrance.

It is good that Joe Biden finally came out, opposed to the lawlessness that we were seeing across our college campuses. Many feel, however, that this was too little too late, and he should’ve come out long before now to condemn the pro Hamas demonstrations, and the hatred towards Israel and Jews that we are seeing across college campuses.

I was impressed he said more than “ don’t “ That worked so well with illegals coming. It worked with Russia. It worked with Iran. Don’t know what he stopped using something that’s working.

"Growlingly violent protests"?? Have they actually been violent? I've tried staying up to date with the protests and haven't seen any violence other than the pro-israel protestors attacking pro-palestine protestors and the cops breaking up encampments. Maybe i have a blind spot?

If u don’t like how Israel is returning the favor for 10/7. Then tell those Palestinians from Gaza that participated in 10/7, to defend and save their women and children. Not hide behind them so u’d beg for sympathy for them.
