When I was seven, I was sat down and told they my friend would not be coming back to visit. What I was too young to comprehend at the time was that my friend had died in the Sandy Hook shooting on December 14, 2012. In 2018, American children were 3 times more likely to die during school hours than a soldier serving a 4 year term in Iraq or Afghanistan. My generation goes to school every day in fear. We sit in our classrooms and subconsciously check where the best hiding spots will be. This has to stop. For us. For our future generations. Please.

@@jellybean8698 There are laws that are in other countries the US doesn't have, like making it illegal to carry such weapons across states, can't get a gun if you have a history of criminal activity or mental illness for the past 5 years, can't have a gun in the same household with someone who has criminal activity or mental illness, etc. ^ These regulations might make it better. But also with school drills, all we have are hard lockdowns. We just hide, which makes it worse. If an intruder/shooter is in the building, it should be common sense to get out of the building as quickly as possible. There's even an official way to get out of the situation. First things first: leave the building when possible. Hide (not in groups) if you can't escape. If you are alone and encounter the shooter, run in a zig-zag motion to make it harder to shoot. If you encounter the shooter in groups or larger numbers of people, get all of them to attack the shooter with all you got. The shooter would try to intimidate and place fear as much as possible; that's what they want. So don't give them what they want. In fact, schools should really do a shooter drill like this.

I can’t imagine being in a class looking over at my friends all with tears down their faces not knowing if we’re ever going to see each other again. Why is this the society that I have to live in? Why should have to fear for my life because a guy with a gun could in the door any minute. My school allows phones even on during lessons which I love. We can use them whenever basically unless it’s during a test or a teacher specifically asks for us to put them away for a certain lesson. Don’t know why so many schools ban them, my school gives us that freedom and in return we don’t abuse the power and listen when they ask us to put them in our bags. More schools should be like that, so sorry about your school that must suck. :(

Santiago Colla there have been over 230 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in the US since 1999. There have been about 24 shootings in 2019 already. In 2018 there were around 103. That doesn’t feel very safe to me.

I remember almost 20 years ago, two men in suits broke into our school and I was in 3rd grade. It was the first year we had any shooter drills like this, and I remember how terrifying it was. We were all crying, and it turned out to be a "prank," and the men were arrested, but I still so vividly remember how terrifying it was and there weren't even any gunshots or yelling. i remember when i was in fifth grade i was huddled under a desk crying and hugging my classmate as a stranger on campus roamed around our classes. my math teacher wouldn't lock the door and she wouldn't turn the lights off until a fifth grader himself did it while crying. everyday i'm thankful that the situation didn't escalate, but the fact my teacher didn't care, the parents weren't called, and that i was sat under that desk with a girl i barely knew crying into each other while writing out goodbyes on small scraps of paper for 2 hours speaks volumes. The fact that the 3 years later nothing has changed and my science teacher is telling us his own plans in case of a school shooter because the schools barely have one upsets me everyday. stay safe fellow students
