Where else can the average person get a once in a lifetime chance to dance or have a drink near a famous celebrity? I have an older cousin who got in only once in 1978 and he saw Geraldo Rivera and David Bowie just hanging out with office workers and truck drivers, laughing and drinking. Somehow I can’t see Cardi B. and Beyoncé doing that without all kinds of armed security and drama.

No, it was open longer than that. It closed in 1980 briefly when Rubbell & Schrager were arrested and later sentenced for tax evasion. But they sold the club to Mark Fleischman. Fleischman reopened it, only to sell it in 1984 to new owners. They closed the dance club in 1986, though it still retains the name. It was reconverted back to a theater in 1998 for the Roundabout Theatre Company and was expanded in 2020 into a music imprint business. This includes record label Studio 54 Music and Studio 54 Radio on Sirius XM. It still has a basement club named Feinstein's/54 Below that hosts some of the best Broadway and Jazz performers.

with my personality, I would have loved that club. What is life without a little hedonism? We are here for a short time, and you must seize the amazing moments when opportunity presents itself. What could be better than dancing, schmoozing, drinking, laughing, in the company of such wanderlust, worldly, interesting people? I can only imagine the bliss of being at that place in 1978, completely surrendered to the addictive escapism on a Friday night. A night at studio 54 must have made time stand still, as the patrons were all disciples of the pleasure principle! The sad thing is that the good times in life usually don't ever come back. Carpe diem!

Big Smile! I just got done leaving a reply on someone else's comment, and then read some of the other comments here. I saw yours and figured I'd copy it, and post it to you. "I'm an 'average' person and so was my boyfriend at the time. We lived in Pennsylvania...still do, and decided that it would be fun to go to New York and see if we could get in....with just jeans and t-shirts. It was a spur of the moment decision. There was a long line outside when we arrived, and I could see that no one was getting in. So we danced in place. One of the three bouncers pointed at us and gestured to come in. I had more fun than I ever had in my life, but the crazy thing is, once was enough. I never had a desire to go back again, and I have no idea whether there were celebrities or not. I felt like a star. The music was fantastic and we danced the night away." You said that the sad thing is that the good times in life usually don't ever come back. Well, yes and no. No wonder it was filled with celebrities. The owners (Rubel & Schrager) Made sure that all waiters take champagne and drinks and party favors (i.e. drugs) to the celebrities , all night long. So naturally celebrities not wanting to spend money, wud appear constantly. And naive and Innocent people wud want to be dancing next to some famous person to brag about it the next day. So these poor souls are the ones that kept this club full of $$$$$ with the entrance fee and high priced drinks. And even tho Some nights, the crowd outside would be enormous. But inside there wud be very few people. Owners just wanted to show, how popular their club was. Which naturally Created more publicity for the club. Of people yearning to be let inside. Rather sad and pathetic of these people waiting outside the club for hours. I heard that clubs called FLAMINGO , LE JARDIN, INFINITY and 12 WEST were much more fun and full of energy and frenzy from the excellent dancers on the dance floor.

Actually, the HIV epidemic didnt begin until the early 80s, when the club's doors were shuttered. It was the gay bathhouses that were the real 'hot spots' for the virus spreading, that is why the NYC health department closed them in the 80s. They also went after a few 'swingers clubs' that appealed to straight folks as well, just for good measure.

Celebrities at the time were not worshipped anywhere near the level they are today, and very likely the most interesting people there were the anonymous regular people who Steve Rubell recognized as having the right style and attitude (fun loving, not snobbish) to be let in. And as far as fashion, a great pair of jeans, boots, and a cool cotton (not polyester!) shirt surpassed any glittery look, though of course there’s photographic evidence of plenty of the latter.
