I think that the Genelecs and Neumanns were the best - actually, throw the Adams in there too, but I felt like the mix you did on them didn't feel very "glued" together, as if there were some hollow spots in it. studio monitors are just a sales gimmick. They make money because they look like NS10 size. small speakers are really for long hours, at low volume, not for “flat studio monitoring”.. that’s what the mains are for, which used to be dialed with Amps and crossovers and 31 band for flawless extreme SPL and freq response 20-20k. The industry follows the money, so we are stuck trying to turn a smart phone into a cinema wide screen
@FelixLanzalaco Жыл бұрын
@@EffimRadio one can get flat monitoring on small speakers. I think what you are getting at is mix detail and distortion elimination which big high quality systems are far better for, at least if the music is complex and/or has natural instruments. The industry caters to volume sales for small speakers where simple home EDM/Rap etc production, and electronic sounds can survive that mix process. But not for tonally and timbrally challenging music... have genelec 1030a for close monitors but for the big mix I need a rack with the EQ, Digital crossovers feeding high quality multichannel amps and high quality drivers in 4 way speakers. Unfortunately this is not cheap, unless you can build your own system with used parts.. then studio level 4 way monitoring is gonna be £10,000 upwards

That focal shape mix sounds problematic. The Adam a little too. Genelec I'd put at number one but being a Genelec fan, I could see the Neumann being better if I was used to that sound. With a larger model and GLM room correction I think you'd be amazed.
@MikkoRantalainen9 ай бұрын
On first listen, C and D were obviously worst. I think I preferred B slightly over A and E was much better than C or D. I was pretty sure A or B was Genelec. I have three Genelec 8030 combined with DSpeaker Anti-Mode 8033 corrected 8" subwoofer for our TV set with an AV receiver handling crossover so I'm very familiar with the sound. And I definitely think that you should have DSP corrected sub if you intend to mix any audio with low bass.
The net capacity size of all speakers to be compared should always be the same size so that the comparison would be fair and correct.

A and C. I wasn't surprised at the reveal. Genelecs are a bit harsh so mixing with them will make you smooth it out. I like the Neumann mix the best because it was a little brighter. I usually bounce back and forth between monitors to check so I can get bass, atmosphere, and treble right. The Adams and Focals kind of make everything sound a little bit too good for me. The drivers are performing so well that you can listen things that consumer speakers can't handle without producing artifacts. I always test with flawed material when I am purchasing. I used to request jacked up sounding examples of the store employees work to test as well as my most poorly mixed song drafts to test.

I would have to re-listen, several more times, to pick my universal. If I were auditioning them, at home, I think I'd either use nature sounds, or Paul Young's "Come Back and Stay," to meter how they interpret range and complexity. I'm curious as to whether you think that the fact that a tone-corrector is engaged affects the trueness of the speakers' sounds, or creates any additional effects not intended. Hmmm....

Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice. I am an aspiring dance music producer and I am planning on improving my production this year and taking it all a bit more seriously and potentially making it into a living. My current monitor is set up as follows. I have a set of Rokit 5 Rpg3 and a Focusrite 2i2. I am currently in the market for a better / second set of monitors for another reference, however, I am and not sure what to get. This is what I am looking to achieve in my studio. I want to be able to switch between 2 sets of monitors, dim the volume, mute the volume and also switch between stereo and mono and alos switch between headphones. Also, I would like the new set of monitors to complement the frequency of my rockits I currently have, as in, when I flick between the 2 sets of monitors they don't sound much the same, but rather have different curses on the spectrum, etc for mixing like a car/iPhone/studio/club, etc I have a DJ setup that I would like to channel through the same 2 sets of speakers which I am currently doing by using 1/4 jacks through the line inputs on the Focusrite 2i2. I also have a Rode NT1 but I don't use it much only when recording other Artists as I don't sing myself. My budget is about €500. And I am currently considering the following: Option 1 Keeping my current set up and buying 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Mackie Big Knob Passive Option 2 Selling my Focusrite 2i2 Mackie Big Knob Studio 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Option 3 Either one of the interface options above but changing the monitors to 2 x Adam T7V or similar? Thanks and looking forward to hearing what you guys think.

I listened to this video on a mid-market AV system (Polk TSi300 tower speakers, Polk Signature series S35 center channel and a Yamaha 8" powered sub). In my studio I recently acquired a 2.1 system consisting of an Adam Audio Sub10 and a pair of Adam A7Xs. I am very pleased with this system. Since setting it up I've spent hours just listening to CD albums, something I haven't done previously for years. Today I listened to albums such as Prokofiev's Cinderella Suite, Dave Alvin, Huey Lewis and the News, the soundtrack to "Life Is Beautiful" by Nicola Piovani and Juno Reactor. I've got the sub level dialed in so that orchestral music is appropriately balanced and EDM rattles your bones, as it should.

It almost sounds like a recording of each speaker playing the same mix, rather than playback of a mixes created on each speaker. I mean, Focals are typically bright, and the mix was bright. ok mr sanjay, before the video starts, i am listening to a pair of DCM time windows (2x6" transmission line column response to 30hz) and a pair of mission 6" book shelves which have INSANE midrange presence. running from a vintage pioneer receiver. i'm saying this because i believe i have a pretty accurate system, and i'll use my focusrite interface output vs the PC line out. ok, let's rock. ok A was nice sounding. B a harsh edge to the highs. i easily guessed that was a ribbon tweeter. i'm a soft dome guy. c was pretty clean and tight D was louder and looser. E sounded the tightest and most balanced. I liked E and A, C. in conclusion, easy to hear speaker D's sloppy passive bass radiator and speaker B's harsh metal tweeter. i would be good with any of the other 3. I kind of like the detail in C and also E seems very neutral and clean. that was fun.

My aim is just to learn to play by hear. What do I need? A digital piano? midi controller? Weighted keys? Semi weighted keys? Keyboard? 88 keys? Hans Zimmer inspires me, I just want to play his music. Please suggest a model 🙏 Thanks & regards
@SanjayC3 жыл бұрын
You can learn how to play by ear on any keyboard - it all depends on your budget and also how you prefer to work/play. If you're comfortable using a computer, then a midi controller could be the cheapest choice, and give you some music production options as well. But if you're not interested in music production, then a digital piano would be the way to go - especially while you're learning. If you're not a trained pianist, then weighted keys may not make a difference to you in the beginning.

@@SanjayC I am not a trained pianist. And about music production I don't think I have that kind of knowledge yet. Does weighted keys make difference in long run? Can I use keyscape or vats with Yamaha p45 easily?

Mixes B, D and E i thought had more detail coming through... With D, am i just lovin' the loudness, (which you advise against), or it's got more clarity 'for reals', so to speak?

I liked D as well...and I'm surprised how many people like E! Wow!

B was definitely my favorite. It has some excitement, but still seems balanced. A was very colored and muddy. C was pretty flat and lacked clarity. D just seemed "Meh". E was clear but lacked the punch of B.

Wow...I'm so surprised at everyone's answers. What speakers/headphones did you listen with?

@@SanjayC I have an older set of KRK rocket 8 and the Beyer 770 pro headphones. It's always amazing to me when the mix is so driven my monitors. When I was in audio school, we had Urie, Yamaha NX and Auratones. If it sounded good in all three, it was a hit.

Same, A was fine, B was better by a good margin, C was similar to A, D was not good to me at all, E was also not good, but not to the extent of D. So B - A - C for me. I have Grado Rs2 and SenHD600, differential dac outputs pluged into Ecc88 summing 2 tubes, into high grade Film capacitor directly with 1st order very mild analog filter.

Great video and a catchy song! Not meaning to be negative after all the effort you've gone to but I don't see how this is really a good way for someone to choose which monitors are the best for them, or a balanced test. You could probably have mixed that song differently on the same set of speakers five different ways and ended up with similar results as you did here - depending on what "mood" you were in or how tired or alert you were at the time and how long you'd been listening/mixing to the same track etc. I think also that most people who have less than perfect sounding rooms will probably use some kind of room correction software these days like Sonarworks and so the sound differences from monitor to monitor change from what they are straight out of the box and the differences between different makes and models after correction become less dramatic than in this scenario. (Don't mean to bitch - just my two cents)

Nice demo. I read a lot of complaints about these self powered speakers generating hiss at idle, do you have any experience with this?
@SanjayC3 жыл бұрын
I didn't experience a hiss problem with any of these. That may be true for cheaper monitors

C, than B and the same with A. The mix done with Neumann (C) seems to be the most neutral and well-balanced. Mix A - maybe just a little to much highs. B - not bad, but something's strange in hi-mids (5-7 kHz), C - neutral, could have a little more deep, D was way too much mid- and hi-mid range, E ... hard to say, I didn't like it, not clear. Tested with my very old monitors, TLC AMS1 Pro (I know them quite well, working with them more than 15 years), AKG K271 mk II, and finally with Jabra Evolve 2 65 which I use only for Teams :)
