Character breakdown time: Anji is Baiken's childhood friend who was made to kind of reflect her; Anji being an feminine man and Baiken being a masculine woman. His theme is basically recounting his memory of the both of them going to a festival and how he's chasing after Baiken. Goldlewis is the secretary of defense for the United States who also heads Area 51. He ironically doesn't believe in aliens but believes in UMAs (unidentified mysterious animals) which is the Japanese term for cryptids. His theme is about how he hates being a government dog but goes along with it anyway. It should be noted that a few lyrics are wrong. For example "the only myth that no one knows" is actually "your regret that no one knows" which is in reference to how the American government can sometimes make people just, yknow, disappear. Axl is a British guy from the 1990s who slipped through time and wanted to go back to see his girlfriend again. His song is about his progression from having no control over his time and being reminiscent of his girlfriend to him having control and his girlfriend being brought to the future. Also it's about his carefree go-with-the-flow nature. Faust is a miracle working doctor who became a murderer for a bit because an operation he did to save a little girl's life failed. He found out his operation was sabotaged and became a quirky philanthropic doctor as an attempt at redemption. Although in Strive, to truly redeem himself he has to "go back to square one" which is why he looks scary and malnourished, his body is operating on instinct. His theme is about him reminiscing about the little girl he tried to save. Smell of the game is basically Sol Badguy's second theme about how he discovered that he has a place in the world despite being half Gear.

He’s just a big and scary guy when he needs to be, but when he knows someone needs it, he tries to push them in the right direction of being better for their own sake!! I don't blame you for not liking Axl's theme lol It's often regarded as one of those songs that grows on you overtime. As for Faust, you almost got him correct as rather he is a doctor turned murderous psychopath turned back in to doctor, but in Strive he appears to be going through a crisis. His type of magic is so incredibly unique that he is able to manipulate reality (including his body) while his knowledge as a doctor makes him the best in the medical field. He's so determined to make up for his murderous rampage in the past that he can't seem to let himself die, reason why he appears so zombie-like even after apparently losing his soul in the game's side-story.

Ok, so Faust was originally a doctor who became a murderous psychopath after the death of one of his patients due to a failed surgery. However after finding out it was purposefully made so that he would fail (the procedure he was gonna do was the solution to immortality) decided to go on a path of redemption, became very happy-go-lucky and started helping everyone he could with a paper bag on his head. Now, during the TWO WEEKS between Xrd and Strive it seems he has gone very insane again, but not murderous. He just seems depressed now. I hate fighting Faust, but I love him as a character so much. Goldlewis Dickinson is the Secretary Of Defense of the United States Of America and that's pretty much all we know about him, his coffin has an alien in it but he does not believe in aliens. Axl was originally a punk from 1980s Britain who got time-travelled to the modern day by accident, there's a lot more but in short he shares the same "LIfe ID that everyone has" as I-No, so them existing at the same time is a paradox and not meant to happen, which is a big part of his lore that I cannot recall now.

I think those two weeks was when The Other Story was going on with Delilah, and he seems to have used up everything in him to save her, probably now sorta like a dead man walking following his instincts to help. But who knows, he could get better in the future, maybe this is how he is now

Axl is a paradox, but not because of i-no, but because he's from 1980-x and was sent into future because of "the backyard" (magical asltral plane basically where magic was founded) glitching out during Happy chaos and Universal will machinations, same as i-no. Because of that they got godly powers of traveling in time however they please (in Axl's theme and gameplay being emphasised by literally stopping time), but unnable to remember their original timeline and unnable to get to it without destroying the current timeline. Troughout the series they're trying to save this world and find a way back home to their significant other, which is mostly impossible, making i-no go "fuck it all" mode and reverse for Axl, him being a goofball and making friends with main characters (mainly sol), using his powers only when absolutely needed despite practical godhood and being one of the two most powerful beings of GG lore. And in strive we finally get confirmation (although it was kind of obvious before) that Axl and I-no - are thoes two significant others from 1980-x and can't remember eachother, kind of cursed by this "paradox" to never recognise eachother. Of course there's much more to it but it'd take ages going over every detail over whys and hows, i hope this at least covers the basic of his lore and main relations.

@@scatzilla99 not confirmed "dead". Otherwise, Faust would have been far more willing to do what he did. Ramlethal basically said "nuhuh, you aren't here to die an honourable death". He went back to "Square One", which, considering his far more "innocent" and simple way of acting and talking, as well as his gait and seeming lack of full control, I'm thinking "Square One" is VERY literal. All he has is his past knowledge. He can't control himself similar to a toddler, which is why he's constantly leaning on his Scalpel. His speech is simple, but still uses complex words, as if he has difficulty piecing them together in his head, or associating them with their definitions. This also PERFECTLY fits his goals. If he's basically been rebooted, this means he can develop and come to see his past in a new light. He can finally forgive himself, rather than hate himself and look for ways to run away instead of move on. It's also fitting why he wouldn't want to do it, because Faust pretty clearly didn't want to forgive himself.

By putting on the bag and becoming Faust, he was effectively running away from his guilt and trauma by becoming a new person. Now, the intense stress of pushing his magic past its limits in another story has reset his personality back to "square one", forcing the person he is now to finally confront the person he was and the things he did. His animations in Strive reflect this struggle between his intensely violent and fiercely protective instincts (handing the opponent pills after he wins a round, eating his opponent only to immediately panic and pull them back out of the void, trying to bring the opponent a wheelchair after accidentally tripping them only to run over their shins, etc.) He's definitely in a bad place mentally right now, but I think it's a necessary step in his journey to forgive himself for all he's done.

Funny how you interpreted Faust's theme, Faust has had many regrets, he lived his life as a normal doctor, some even saying the best doctor. He was tasked to cure a little girl's disease which curing could have meant the concoction of immortality. He obviously failed, and it drove him INSANE. He went on a killing spree from the insanity, and became known as the serial killer "Dr. Baldhead". In the midst of the insanity, a moment of clarity happened. The little girl told him (Possibly hearing her dead ghost) that it wasn't his fault and that he should move on, for her sake. He tried to atone by ending his life, but before he did the deed, he found out that the whole thing was a setup. After finding that out, he became Faust, and tried to help everyone he can and tries to find the truth. Many kinda unimportant things happen, but he finds the people behind the whole setup, thanks to Zato-1, which is why he hates him in Xrd (as he's partially responsible for giving the little girl that condition), and exacts revenge on the conclave, the ones behind the whole mess. However, instead of giving in to his old urges, he wants to find out the cure to the Japanese population becoming sick with an extremely rare condition. One of the members agrees to help and, presumably, they find the cure, as it's never mentioned again in the strive story and May and Anji (Both Japanese) are completely fine now. Some people think the cure lead to Faust's body undergoing some skin grafting and wild procedures, which is why he has the skin patches stitched together. In Strive's extra story, he seems a bit better than he is in gameplay, and we find out it's because in order to stop a big bomb from happening (LOOONG story) Faust had to use magic to create a door to the Backyard (Kind of the Hell of the universe) and in trying to do so, he had to go back to his instinctual roots (Square one, as he says), and almost died. When he came to, he was... Not himself, not Dr Baldhead again, but not Faust. Something, in between. Still caring, but in a more sinister way, which is reflected in most of the song. Going through bouts and madness and sadness.

Soo, we have a few fun characters here. Anji Mito was born in the Japanese colonies, and he’s kind of a curious soul, always kind of more interested in the “could I” rather than the “should I”. He was very hopelessly in love with Baiken, the samurai lady you reacted to a while ago. After the Japanese colonies were invaded by Justice and her army of gears, Anji and Baiken kind of ended up going their separate ways, preventing Anji from actually admitting his feelings for Baiken. Anji still supports her from the shadows, even if he doesn’t really agree with her seeking revenge and is still trying to pull her away from revenge, being her informant on the whereabouts of That Man (the guy responsible for the nuking of Japan AND the creation of the gears that raided Japan) all while also searching for the truth of the actual REASON That Man had for the atrocities. Goldlewis is fairly simple. He’s the Secretary of Absolute Defense, and he’s got the hobby of searching for UFOs and aliens, even if he doesnt believe they exist. He still carries one in that coffin though, but thinks its just a cryptid. His job also tasks him with dealing with area 51 stuff (I think), so he’s not really allowed to talk about his work or hobby. His theme talks mainly about him just disliking his job, taking orders like a dog (Bark Bark, both his superiors barking orders at him and him just rolling over like a dog for them.) Axl is kind of a simple one but with complex execution. He’s just Axl Rose in guilty gear, and its hilarious. But, in GG lore, he’s a time traveler from britain (as someone said before, Post Apocalypse is a total upgrade from Britain, at least) and is kinda just dragged around by his time powers. He’s pretty chill about it though, even if he can’t go back to his girlfriend without destroying the current timeline he’s in. His theme expresses it pretty clearly. He takes it all in stride, not too worried about his circumstance and being pretty averse to fighting. He’s learned to enjoy the new sights and old smells he’s experienced thanks to his now-controllable powers. Thankfully, by the end of strive he gets his girlfriend brought to HIM in the current timeline, so happy ending for him. Faust is the greatest doctor in the world, able to make miracles happen and solve the majority of problems thrown his way. Sadly, back in the older game story, he went mad after the Conclave orchestrated a patient’s death, because he was about to figure out how to resurrect the dead. He ended up a murderer for a while. Later on, he recovered and put a bag over his head in shame, becoming Faust and trying to atone by treating as many people he can. In Strive’s story, he ends up wearing himself out too much saving Delilah (the girl from Bedman?’s portrait) and is now this kinda zombified version, shambling around trying to treat people as best he can.

Mankind knew that they cannot change society. So, instead of reflecting on themselves, they blamed the beasts. Is said at the start of every round. The beasts in this case would be the gears. Many characters had lost family loved ones to the gears. the games song is pretty direct to the main characters Sol(the first gear) and Ky(a veteran of the gear wars) You can always go back to look at the older character themes or the songs from the previous games. Like ino's theme she was first introduced with The midnight carnival. Or some songs that are well loved like Juno, Fresscia or Heavy day. The game is a series and has a massive catalog of fantastic OSTs.

Much love and praise for Naoki Hashimoto, the primary male vocalist for Guilty Gear Strive's OST. He's the frontman for the Japanese thrash metal band Outrage, which has been continually playing for over 40 years! While he wasn't with them the entire time, Naoki has sung in Outrage for over 30 years and continues to do so to this day. He has mastered his voice and it shows with all the different styles he can sing and just how high and low he can go with it, it's incredible! Crawl is easily my favorite song from the OST because it's thrash metal and Naoki is just in his element with that song, but I also greatly appreciate what he does for Out of the Box and Alone Infection. Naoki isn't a one-note singer, he's the real deal. As for a request, maybe consider checking out Heavy Day, the main theme for Guilty Gear Xrd. While not a lot of that game's OST has vocals, Heavy Day does, being the first song Naoki did for Guilty Gear and ultimately setting the tone for what would become Strive's soundtrack. Your videos have been quite entertaining, I enjoy watching musicians react and give some professional insight to help us non-musicians better appreciate this music we already like.

He's Mr. Badguy, real name Frederick Bulsara, has "rock you" on his bandanna, etc. Ky Kiske - Kai Hansen+Michael Kiske. His super is called "Ride the Lightning". His old theme was called "Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead)". His Xrd theme has riffs really similar to Electric Eye (which became a story spoiler). Axl Low - His name. His old old theme was called March of the something something that was obviously referencing the Black Queen. His old theme was "Make Oneself". Zato-1 - The shadow is called Eddie. There is more reference to metal in guilty gear. The main offender is sol with a slew of queen references. His actual name is Frederick. He has rock you and other line writen on his body. There is also KY that has a super called ride the lightning. Back to queen with bedman, at first glance there is nothing in the name, but the girl and her brother are called delilah and Romeo, wich were the names of two of Freddy's cats. Elphelt entire aesthetic is guns and roses. I-no alsohas a reference in her name (but idk it) what I know tho is that her guitare is an actual know one used by a celebrity. There is a whole lot more but not on the tip of my tongue right now.

Doctor Baldhead was an amazing doctor, who had never let a single patient die on his table. When he found a girl with a terminal illness he promised to cure her, and so he started working on resurrection magic. The Assassins guild ended up killing the little girl and pinning the blame on Doctor Baldhead, which drove him insane with the guilt. He began to kill people without rhyme or reason, and was quickly known as a serial killer. When Slayer met Doctor Baldhead he told him the truth, he was set up. He never killed that little girl. Slayer did not like the Assassins guild, and found no reason to keep the information from Doctor Baldhead. Once again he was stricken with grief, but decided this time to redeem himself. Donning a paperbag and an alias, Faust, would move on around the world saving as many lives as he could. In Guilty Gear: Strive, Delilah, a very powerful little girl, attempts to warp to Happy Chaos, which creates a bubble of information that could explode at any moment, completely decimating the city of 100k+ people below. Faust sees her in trouble, and puts everything on the line to save her. His body is stretched thin from the sheer amount of exertion. And once it is over, his Soul leaves his body, bound for heaven. But, while Faust may have died, he lived on. His body, his corpse, driven by Faust's sheer want to help others, now roams the world in a zombified state, continuing to help those in need. From what we can tell at least, this song symbolises that Faust is struggling to come to terms with the fact that; he cannot save everyone. No God will help him, or anyone else, it is up to him alone to try and save as many as he can, but that amount will never be all those he meets. Let alone those he never gets the chance to see before they pass. Therefore he is somewhat driven mad from the depression, the sheer weight of his unrealistic expectation like a crushing burden on his shoulders.

There are two huge events in the world of Guilty Gear that sort of inform a lot of the themes in the songs: the destruction of technology plus the rise of magic, and the subsequent creation of a race of inhuman magical beings that nearly destroyed the world, called Gears. Any themes discussing beasts or monsters is usually referring to any red-eyed Gears, as Gears are, generally, completely insane and just want to go crazy and cause havoc. Sol Badguy was involved in the creation of the Gear race, originally intended to advance medicine with the newfound understanding of magic, but ended up turning into the first prototype Gear. Gears go on to become monsters and nearly destroy the world, and Sol feels responsible since he helped create them, hence he sees himself as the Guilty Gear. Sol constantly fights his Gear nature to give in to destruction, but he has saved the world over and over during the course of the games. As some (sane) Gears (Testament, Sin, Dizzy) and other Artificial beings (Ramlethal, JackO, Elphelt) integrate into society, people come to question their preconceived notions of what it means to be human, what it means to live in a society, and what it means to be free. As for characters you haven't hit yet: Sol Badguy (the Guilty Gear, the protagonist) Jack'O (An artificial human with the soul of Sol's dead wife - don't ask) May (just a random girl who is monstrously strong and can use magic to summon sea creatures - she has a crush on her friend Johnny) Sin (Ky and Dizzy's son, he's quarter-gear and 5 years old but has aged rapidly) Giovanna (Brazilian-American secret service agent, she is best friends with a magical dog spirit that makes her super strong)

Hi Jhulian! Been liking your videos a lot recently but just wanted to clarify something first really quick from the soundtrack! The guy singing is not Daisuke nor works as a voice actor, he is the singer of the Japanese metal band Outrage named Naoki Hashimoto, he is cool enough to borrow his voice for Guilty Gear songs since like 2011-12 I believe (he started in a pachinko game and then got into the main games with Xrd). The OST for Strive is just incredible. I stumbled onto the theme for Happy Chaos yesterday and bought the soundtrack on that alone. Discovering the rest of the soundtrack has been such a joyous and uplifting experience that I truly believe that this purchase is easily the most worthwhile use of my money in a very long time.

There’s a lot of music from before STRIVE, too! There’s some far less heavy vocal tracks in the Xrd series, and many quality instrumental tracks but i favor the vocal. Also, DLC is still coming out, and since every character has a theme, new music comes with it! A very important character in the lore, Asuka, might be DLC soon so I’m excited for that. I love the Guilty Gear OSTs, thank you for the analysis!

The humanity part is said before every match is played and followed by "heaven or hell" which is iconic to the series, and the beasts are the creatures called "gears" so humanity just pit all their problems on them...which is slowly changing. Thx for your reactions, they are really interesting! The only one last song i would recommend listening to is Disaster of passion, it is hated by some because it is not so metal but it's still worth the reaction

The idea that every song has a deeper meaning to them is spot on. The creator was very careful writing the lyrics so it would suit the characters backstory the most perfect way possible. The KZbinr GekkoSquirrel has an amazing video about how the lore and the songs connect to one another. The video is called: What Does Each Strive Character Theme Mean? Funny enough, despite his design Faust is defintiely one of the good guys now. He did have a brief period as a serial killer in his past, but he's spent the past few games trying his absolute best to atone for that.

probably mentioned here somewhere but for Faust, he is talking to the patient that he was set up to kill which broke him mentally. at least in the chorus he is. now he is back on his road to redemption. the blue, red and black refer to our one sky (sunrise/sunset, midday and night). he is asking his patient who is now in heaven about all the true colors of the sky from their perspective

you could listen to other guilty gear game's vocal themes too, they aren't that many because before strive there wasn't a vocal theme per character but i promise that they're equally good, some recomendations i'd do are: heavy day, nsfw, big blast sonic, freesia, and sky should be high there are quite more if you're interested but these are my personal favorites, i hope you like them

Faust is a hero he only wants to help people and saved/helped the main guilty gear crew a lot. But he had a nightmare of a life and i'm pretty sure he gave up his soul to help others in the end of xrd's story (idk i haven't watched the full story yet)

Axl has spent the entire series depressed because he's a time traveler that didn't know how to control his powers and has been bouncing all over the timeline. He's been separated from his friends and home and family and fiancee and even with starting to get a hold on his powers, going back would probably destroy the entire current timeline. He's finally dragged him out of it a bit and is enjoying his friends and the current time period, even reaching out to the other time traveler I-No after she gave him some advice in the past couple games. Out of the Box isn't my favorite theme, but it's very happy and upbeat for a character that's finally overcoming a funk he's had the entire franchise. The irony of his storyline involving time travel but until now he's been trapped in the same problem day after day year after year

Something I want to correct is that CloudDrop's stuff comes out before the official lyrics sometimes and they interpret it by ear. Not bad, but putting the right lyrics in Goldlewis's theme makes it really different! Instead of "I'm ready for this work that I do" it's "I'm ready for this, what a-bout you?" (Although I definitely like the mis-heard lyric more, lol) Instead of "What we do here is clear" it's "What we need to do is clear", Instead of "It's a vacant urge" it's "It's a vacant dirge", (Though that's REALLY hard to discern because of the blending of the ending t and the beginning d) Instead of "Because they don't believe" it's "Because there are those who believe", Instead of "Words that please no one" it's "Words that reach no one". Makes the meaning a bit different! My favorite description of his theme is: "I hate being a dog for the government, but somebody's gotta do it right." Also he's definitely American, he has an alien in that coffin he carries around, which has a sticker saying "PROPERTY OF AREA 51". The alien helps him fight, prank calls Goldlewis to distract him, and as soon as he turns his back, abducts whoever he just defeated. It's amazing.

A great read I've heard for Alone Infection is basically, it's about Faust's regression. A kind, gentle soul, that only wants to help and heal, but he's fallen into back into madness. And if you read it that way, depression. Faust burnt himself out through his own altruism, but he's such a good person, he can't help but keep trying.

Ha sido una grata sorpresa encontrar a alguien con inquietudes sobre la música del juego. Tengo experiencia tocando la batería pero además de lo maravillosa que es la música me ha fascinado como los temas concuerdan y siguen la línea narrativa de los personajes. No solo escuchas unos temas de miedo , descubres historias, tristes, emocionantes y hasta rídiculas. Goldlewis es un puro caso de escepticismo extremo. LLeva un alien a la espalda pero nunca, nunca jamás admitirá que eso es del espacio. Además las animaciones del final son de risa . Basicamente los aliens abducen al oponente pero siempre pasa algo que hace que nunca puedo presenciarlo. Hilarante. A nivel personal me he enamorado del tema de Ramlethal por lo bien que tratan el tema de la adquisición de humanidad y apego. Faust y Potemkin son dos tragedias ,cada uno a su propio nivel. Uno lucha contra una depresión que lo está volviendo loco ( y sabe muy bien de lo que es capaz en ese estado) El otro es la historia de un hombre que nunca ha sido libre ( creación, esclavo, soldado , libertador y ahora una herramienta de poder para mantener la paz) Alguien que odia la violencia , que busca un equilibrio en su vida pero siempre se ve arrastrado a hacer lo que no quiere por el deber a su país. Básicamente un budista introspectivo obligado a ser un arma de destrucción masiva por el bien de los suyos.

It might interest you that the main characters them song "Find your one way" actually got its own official music video, albeit for a slightly shorter version of the song, as a celebration for the games first year anniversary. its also one of the shorter themes generally, so you might even want to check the game and MV version together to compare them.

I'll add another comment on for smell of the game and to tell you this song is kind of a duet between Sol and Ky (mainly Sol). lastly you HAD to be there on the trailers leading to this game with this song on them, when Naoki(I believe that is the singers name) sings "THAT IS BULLSHIT BLAZING" and the crowd looses it/ sings it, was magical.

I personally Love the AXL theme. I know it's not for everyone but seeing you poke at specifically the chorus as a part you dont fully dig really helped me understand why so many people dislike the song. Its repetitive and the part that's supposed to hook you just doesnt. It's the same for me, but I like all the other bits of the song enough to still say i love the song. - An Axl player

Also if you’d ever be interested in moving from songs outside of strive, I would recommend stuff like Marionette, Call Shot, or Tsuki no shihai! Only the last one of these has lyrics but imo they do just as good as a job of communicating the characters as the ones with lyrics are! (I’m biased with Call Shot because Venom is my favorite guilty gear character but…)
