Excellent video. You have a new subscriber. I tried so many DAWs. Each has their issues. Started in FL Studio about 15 years ago making trance music. Tried Cubase, ProTools, BitWig. I found Studio One in 2010 and I haven't looked back. I think the most important thing to remember is to find the DAW that works for you and learn the ins and outs. I have been with it for 13 years and I still am learning things each session. Keep up the great work Josh.

I've been recording for over 20 years on multiple systems (mac and windows) using different sound cards/interfaces ranging from $99 to $800+ and using different DAWs from Cakewalk to Reason to Cubase and now Studio One. My biggest advice for compatibility is to do research on what versions of whatever OS you're using has the best compatibility. If you, by pure magic and random chance, get your hardware and software to work without big issues, DO NOT UPDATE ANYTHING! OS updates and bad drivers are the main reason for incompatibility. We are programmed to always update everything but that is not always the best way to go.

Josh, Studio One still lack scripting .. Macros / templates isn't enough - So, lets say that you want to streamline your workflow getting the exact same e.g drum settings as the track you did earlier to have the "same " drummer settings in the next track, or even the entire "band" .. S1 cannot do this (e.g., Ableton Live with Max for Live, or REAPER with its scripting capabilities), you'll have to do complicated macro's for this. Lets say you have an AI Agent to help you setup your "band" in a new track .. you could have live band, cosy band and even production band just by telling your agent AI to start up a "band" .. I know you have templates etc. but thats not flexible and you'll end up having 600 different templates instead of having the option to "tell" it to setup your band. What S1 lack is the scripting option - Soon, or even today you have the ability to do a lot using AI agents .. Next month S1 would be lost in the jungle - So, tell them about this 🙂

Regarding the hard drive from what i seen is cubase has a disk streaming option thats checked in the settings by default. A lot of programs when you import they just go into ram. When you export the files get saved back to disk. That could be why you had the uninterrupted behavior when you took out the USB drive by accident.

Why i can’t work in cubase anymore after trying studio one: - no gapless audio.😢 - to many windows - not stable - no folder bus tracks - to many click’s to do things - no mono to stereo track - mediabay preview delay - CPU heavy - no vertical zoom with mouse wheel - supports only vst3 64bit plugins in native m1 version - macros like s1 - saving track presets like s1(with folder, inserts, sends, buses everything…)😮

I have used Cubase for years and it does have its painful and frustrating moments that will make you cuss like a drunk sailor. Recently it got so bad because steingberg does not support 13th Gen Intel processors so I switched to Pro Tools and I am so much happier. Of course Pro Tools has its quirks like any DAW but I have seen the light of why it is the industry standard. I still use Cubase for composition, midi and Vst work because the are king on that front. Like you said Vari Audio Warp, Chord Pads/Track is straight beast mode. Right now no DAW matches Cubase in the realm of midi hence I suppose that is why top tier Composers and Multimedia Creators use it heavily. That hard drive issue is something I never expirenced and I use externals all the time with cubase. The plugin display issue, that is a Windows issue so make sure you go into preferences menu in Cubase and either check or uncheck HDPI in the display section. You will have to play around with the scaling options in that menu to the plugins to display properly.

I use several DAWs and feel for you on this experience. For me the plugin GUI weirdness in Cubase has never happened. I dislike another aspect of their VST user sorting - I'm used to FL Studio where I can easily create my own hierarchies in Windows Explorer as opposed to Cubase's VST system, which is hard to drag and drop in for some reason. The external hard drive issue is possibly down to the difference between all DAWs and how they handle plugin folders with some taken Windows issues into account better than others. Cubase is the creator of VST and are sticklers for a lot of weird stuff when it comes to plugins, and the advent of large external drives is new on that timeline. Studio One was much better informed since they came around later. In my experience some DAWs offer more flexibility but it comes at a price. Ableton, I think, allows just one single custom folder. FL Studio basically allows as many plugin folders as one needs, and FL Studio isn't running scans on every session. With FL Studio's fast scan, you can run it in 60 seconds or so even if you have a thousand plugins. It knows how to see where the new ones are. But if I understood that issue you had, then it's important to let people know that, more significantly this inability to locate a previous folder, and the drive renaming issue it comes from, is mainly not really the fault of DAW programmers, although some have taken Windows design flaws into account better than others. it's a Windows poor design choice that has been true for as long as external drives have been available. How I avoid it (if it's the error I think you're referring to) is I re-letter all my external drives to the end of the alphabet - Z, Y, X, W, V etc. If I didn't do that and one of my drives decided to not stay powered on during Windows startup (they do that occasionally without even being unplugged) the missing drive would lose it's letter and the other drives would be re-lettered. Trust giant O/S firms at your peril.

"It was affecting my mojo" I can't agree more. Cubase has a lot of features but it ends up breaking you because of its bugs. I was a Cubase Pro user for a decade and I lost songs and ideas to a point that recording music wasn't fun anymore. Every version was adding new problems. Was it my PC settings? Maybe but after Cubase 10.5 I moved to Studio One Artist and even if it's not the full version with all of its limitations it just gave me the peace of mind that I needed to record music and forget about the software that I was using. I also tried Ableton before Studio One and it also didn't have the problems that Cubase had but its piano roll was simply not big enough for a keyboard player!

I agree with all that you said in that video, and I wish I could watch videos like yours before I wasted money a while ago on Cubase. Now I switched to S1 few months ago and became creative again. Just like you said, S1 has his own issues as well, but the features are more intuitive and keep me productive. Especially after Cubase, I feel features really work better on S1, they are just better designed comparatively. For me it's all about focusing on music, not on half-implemented tons of features that don't really care about and don't really work and that I need to spend time on to work-arounds. I know people like ableton too, but I found S1 just easier to use. I'm interested by what you think of Ableton btw, but I wanted to say thanks for sharing your experience! Hope new folks trying software too will watch that videos and won't waste their time and money on that dynosaur :)

@@vcodev108 Yes studio one is great, but everyone is kidding themselves if they think that S1 is going to get the kinds of features that cubase has anytime soon. After fender bought presonus and Studio One 6 was such a giant disappointment i decided to bail on S1 before i got too attached to it, because i believe its just not going to be in very active development and bring many new features to the table. Also tho, i found navigating the timeline when editing to be super clunky. Its hard to stay located on the specific spot and track that you're editing, and zooming in/out is weird. They all require extra effort and are harder than they should be, and editing is where i spend 75% of my time. With cubase now my issue is that routing is too complicated. Its built to emmulate the way a physical console works, when it just doesnt need to be (same as S1, except S1 takes care of most of the routing automatically at least, wich is nice). I would also say tho, S1 has what is probably the most unique and innovative feature of any daw out there...the splitter tool. So freaking handy, I wish there was a plug-in version of it. The stock plug ins in Studio one arent very good, but thats not the end of the world because i have a lot of 3rd party stuff. Cubase has amazing stock plug-ins. I feel like I wasted money on BOTH S1 and cubase (bought Studio one 5 last summer, and bought cubase two months ago)...when I should have just stayed with Reaper. If reaper had better midi capabilities I would have been less inclined to waste my money and time on other daws. I almost always end up doing midi production in Maschine anyhow because scene based songwriting is a very easy way to scratch out ideas quickly for me. Maybe that means I should have tried ableton or bitwig for the clip arranging capabilities instead. I do have live light, but I've never even opened it because I'm a fool 😆. I really should try before i buy. Also, i will say that after years of never trying FL studio (because the fruity loops era biased me to think it was basically a toy daw), I got a cracked portable copy as part of a guitar trade. I didn't think I'd vibe with it, but it was surprisingly decent. Once I got used to the strange workflow of not having every instrument or part be separated on different tracks, It was surprisingly easy to sketch ideas out. It has good stock plug ins and a even better stock sound set. But its recording and audio editing capabilities are lagging way behind most daws. I would love to sit in a room for a month with a bunch of smart coders and develop my perfect daw lol. Reaper was my first daw and i got spoiled by the fact that routing is super easy and a track can be anything you want it to be. Audio, instrument/midi, send/return, group...anything. That keeps the mixer section SO much less complicated and cluttered...so mixing becomes way less complicated. Pluss its super easy to navigate and edit within the timeline. Maschine has a great workflow, but integration within daws is a problem and always will be. I'm going to try to give myself more time to get used to cubase, but as of now my guess is that I'll be heading back to Reaper.

@Trensharo So many wrong assumptions, 'Cubase is deep' -> hilarious, it's certainly very cumbersome and buggy and unnecessarily complicated to use. 'Hip-Hop makers have no business...' I'm not recording hip hop but recorded in more than 600 projects with S1, Live, Cubase, Logic Pro, Pro tools, and digital performer in various styles and various studios, so wrong again. I used more than 90% of the DAWs I used, even did programming and logic environment complex designs in the past, and we are many to use fully these tools, so the 65-75% assumption is not holding again. The only reason why Cubase is popular is that a bunch of old timers still use it, don't want it to change because they know it and never really got into the depth of Studio one. Sure there are still today few features only Cubase has that sometimes work if you're in your lucky day, but so is the case for every DAW I mentioned upper, and the price to pay for these badly implemented features is just stupid. I hope you're not using C13 ATM, because it will only be barely useable at revision 13.0.90 ...

Your problem could be the very thing you kept repeating... you were all current. Sometimes all current versions don't work well and you have to revert. It just happens time to time. LOL... former S1 hardcore user here! And now on: Cubase 12! and very happy. Studio One only copies from other daws, there are no innovations... It can be seen again and again - S1 is stealing Cubase features in so many updates. So the last update: all features from cubase!! then you can use the original: Cubase. And since cubase has all the features that made S1 great (more inserts, bezier automation curves, vsti pictures in browser, lower zone, right browser zone, effects on events, etc.), why should you use S1. And not to forget that the modern great inspiring sample content is muuuch better in cubase! What comes with S1 is old-fashioned and so lame. The effects and VSTis in cubase are top notch, this does not apply to S1. And Cubase has the BEST MIXER in the daw world. The S1 flat GUI is so uninspiring. with a lot of tracks you quickly lose the overview... Can´t live without Cubase wonderful very fast inspiring Samplertrack and Cubase´s Control Room. To be honest, the guy who stays on cubase in 2024 without having switched to Studio one is the same guy who stays on a GT40 instead of taking a Formula 1 ^^.

Cubase's arranger track is much better than Studio One's. That's the one thing that always makes me go back to Cubase. But Studio One runs more smoothly on my system, as well. And there are a lot of things that frustrate me about Cubase.

The arranger track in Cubase is non-destructive, which is superior. It doesn't physically cut or slice the arrangements. It arranges.

A little disappointed. I was expecting a real comparison here. Like the overall user experience between the DAWs. How their workflows compare. The UI, the layout, the functions, and also the features. Now you did compare features, but I find it a little superficial. Mostly, you complained about technical errors and difficulties, which to me doesn’t really tell you anything important about a DAW. As you said, some work well for some and not for others. It’s just random like that. So not a good 30 day test. It’s better to really dig in and do a full comparison of every aspect of these two programs. But at least you did the features.

Cubase is way better than Studio one. I own Cubase 12, Studio one 6 via " sphere", Logic, and Ableton 11, i have learned pro tools in school and used it recently in a recording studio " i do not own it". Cubase is the best!!

What a pitty. Im Cubase user since 2000 and never had any issue. I dont know if its Apple OS against Windows. But, at least in my experience everything works flawaless even the way Cubase handle the new Silicon system natively and the efficiency cores vs performance cores is waaaay better than Ableton and Logic, and thats kinda weird cuz Ableton should be lighter DAW in terms of CPU usage and Logic should work better cuz is developed by Applehood. The only two things thats hard in Cubase are those paid upgrades and some long time requested features that they just dont add as change order of channels on the mixer, or even delete them from that tab, Stack tracks (Logic function), and some other functions thats more like electronic/rap style of producing functions. But nothing that would make me change. Im not sponsored from Steinberg, away from that, Im a Brazilian and here to get 1 Euro is 6 of my money so everything is x6. Anyway I liked your video. Keep rocking, bruv!

If you 'never had any issue', then either you're blind or you never really used much of the features available in cubase. The cubase forum and tons of videos show and report a lot of bugs you don't see, apparently.

Studio one is basically the poor mans Cubase. The head programmer for studio 1 came from Steinberg and has been stealing all there ideas since day 1. That why the programs resemble each other so much. The problem your having with certain vst being different sizes I have on some of the ik multimedia vst. but the other 400 + vst programs I have don't have this issue. BTW for a while I think your going to find all kinds of issue with windows 11. I had to send back a newer laptop because they only offered it with windows 11 on it. Tried it for a week and all kinds of weird little b.s. with all types of software. Honestly I dont get a chip on my shoulder to much about studio one users. Like I said its just the poor mans cubase, and if they are using that when they becomes pros they will probably move over to cubase.

I've tried them both. For me S1 is a new and improved Cubase with a better UI and features. It's not perfect, and it's definitely obvious that S1 has Cubase influences but overall, to me it is less clunky with some features that make it a better choice for me- flipped faders for sends, better handling of mono-stereo tracks and folder busses.

@@gotyor You don't seem to read, of course I did and I used cubase for while, until I used S1 and to realized how cumbersome and buggy cubase was. I actually used Logic Pro, Ableton Live as well, tried other DAWs such as reaper, protools digital performer, it's been a while I record and do a lot of live tracking. Unless you're an old timer that can't adapt to change, you'll probably end up preferring other DAW's. I still Like Logic Pro too bad it's so buggy and also asks you to update OS'es every 2 releases or so... S1 is really my favorite of all of them today.

Not only cubase..ableton users can also claim that most of S1 keycommand and functionality are copied from ableton.. Few days ago a friend who uses logic said the same that it is very similar to logic..but as a S1 user for 2 years now, I can say that it has become a league of its own..all of the best features from other daw with their own unique spin, plus really cool features that are unique to studio one..i shifted from cubase to S1 cause it was easy to adapt, was very fast and smarter then cubase .i also use ableton from time to time..but can say S1 is the most fastest and easy daw on the market today.
