Interested to hear the conclusions you came to regarding the SP-16 and the Octatrack. I have both and I love then both for different reasons.
@grazstarr3 жыл бұрын
@@555atU really? I would have though the octatrack would be heaps better than the sp16? How do you find it are you still using the sp16 today?
@555atU3 жыл бұрын
@@grazstarr hey man! The SP-16 is immediate and I can craft ideas quickly on it. I use Splice and can build scenes and export them to the SP-16. The Dave Smith filter also gives it a great sound on its own.. Sampling and sample editing is very easy on it. Multiple outs are a very nice have too. Octatrack is a multi-purpose beast but it's complicated, sample editing is not very good, its menu happy and takes time and patience to get fast with it. Nothing does what the Octatrack does however, but it's a tough love for many people to be competent with it. With all that said, I typically use the SP-16 to create drum beats, percussion and simple melodic riffs. I use the Octatrack to mangle melodic samples with scenes which adds all the interesting stuff to a track.

@@555atU you legend! That's some great feedback thank you! Helps to try and work out what I want to get. I'm tossing up between the sp16 or a digitakt. I prefer to play/jam live and on the fly and build my tracks in a live environment so I'm wondering if the sp16 is my better choice. But I've seen the digi is great for like you said about the octa: mangling and creating rich organic sounds which it doesnt seem the sp16 can do. Anyway thanks again for the awesome reply man!

@@grazstarr one bit of SP-16 info that is important is Pioneer-DJ's devotion to the Toraiz line is suspect. They have not put up upgrades in years and their responses in the user forum is a joke. So that's a red flag. Ahh dude you have to bring the Digitakt into this..lol. I have the Digitakt as well and it's new upgrade is a game changer for it's current owners. It's a great device and would recommend it. But it doesn't do time stretching which is it's big shortcoming. And it's all mono samples if that matters...doesn't to me and I prefer them for editing. It all comes down to what kinda music you want to make and how you want to perform it. Another option is the Akai MPC One or Live/Live 2. Those are more studio production tools than all that we've talked about. I don't have those but my friend beta tests for Akai and has all of their MPCs. They are great devices with a more stubborn performance workflow IMO. But Akai sampling is top notch. If you have funds to drop for one device....that's a tough one. I would lean toward Digitakt or Octatrack because of their sequencers allow for more variety. Good luck!

@BendApparatus3 жыл бұрын
@@grazstarr did you end up getting one? I agree with you on the old vids BUT sometimes gear ends up making a resurrection when people rediscover it. It also drives up the prices. I'm really bad at using production software and overcomplicated gear. So this one really grabs my interest because it's supposedly dead simple. At the this time there's still new units available. But used it's still pretty $$$ to the point that buying it NEW seems more logical...

Amazing video, I liket it. I also have a Toraiz and absolutely love it!!! To help you answer the question at Min 41, about the pitch: If you have the Toraiz linked to a CDJ you can change the pitch of everything you are currently playing at once. You can do that by sliding the pitch fader of the CDJ to which the Toraiz is acting as a tempo slave. As you said, it gets treated as just another regular deck.
@DirtySecretz8 жыл бұрын
fdossa 1 ah ok, I was talking about pitch in terms of key rather than speed. The Toraiz uses the term pitch in that way and the BPM separately. I think I may have misunderstood the question if it was about speed, which is totally true as you say.
@djandreezer7 жыл бұрын
Dirty Secretz You mean key, no? You can adjust the key for each track. What you essentially want is take a synth sample and change key on the fly - or transpose. Is that what you're looking to do?

Tough one, I love my Elektron Heat and if I hadn't already been involved with Pioneer it probably would have been a tough decision! Elektron does have a very unique way of doing things, quite 'quirky' whereas the Toriaz SP-16 is more traditional in that way. Both are great and you'll be able to get similar results out of them - I think it's probably personal taste!

You’ll need to open them up in an audio editor, Audacity is a free one. You’ll need to open it and convert it in there - do a google for whatever editor you have to see how to do that.

G'day mate. I'm using the Toraiz for live shows and agree its an amazing tool. But I'm also using it for production. A problem I have though, is when I 'render the audio' to output (when my track is finished), the sound is terrible when I play it on another device. The sound is great when I play directly out of the Toraiz into a hifi system or my headphones but as soon as I export it, it sounds bad. Is this because when I render the audio it doesn't carry the Dave Smith High/low pass filter in the save and therefore lacks drive?
@DirtySecretz3 жыл бұрын
I believe you're right, I think when you're exporting it doesn't go through any of the analogue circuitry it just bounces out the audio from the sequencer. I've never used this option myself, I usually always hook the SP-16 via audio and record it in directly to my DAW. I'll also often send an output from my DAW, into the input of the SP-16 and then back to the DAW again so I can run audio through the Dave Smith filters.

I really wish they would stop pushing this as just for dj' s kinda forcing themselves to stay in their lane. I bought mines instead of the akai mpc live because akai is known for bugs and screwing their buyers. That being said I love the potential of the sp 16. BUT. For all the shiny lights and pretty screens it's missing some major things that a sampler from the 80's can do better. No creating user sample folders, no making personal kits, i can edit samples by ear faster on my Korg ESX 1 with 2 knobs and be more precise. Workarounds should not have to be made for a 1500 machine. I have pretty much every hardware groovebox and the sp 16 takes way too long from sample to chop, to add to track. Hope they get better with next update. And yes I am a dj/producer/artist Was hoping the sp would bridge the gap. Or Mabey I will get the live also who knows ?
@DirtySecretz8 жыл бұрын
Mikepepp2 This is the reason I think the SP-16 is suited mostly for DJs, not as a piece of production equipment. There is hardware much better, much more precise for production but where the SP-16 shines is its simplicity and when you're DJing, you need that. It may be a little fiddly to edit samples but I think in future software updates that could be improved. It's not perfect but it's the first iteration, no doubt they'll get better as time goes on. Have to agree on price, it is quite hefty but just matches up with other Pioneer products I guess!
@Mikepepp28 жыл бұрын
Dirty Secretz yeah it is easy to use I just see the potential of the unit and I really hate akai any chance I can get to make better music on a non akai product I take it. It's is still early was just future forecasting I can see a proper work station , sampling , sequencing , pioneer selling sound kit packs of drums,synths and all and still , taking care of the dj im still a vinyl dj ,so if they get this right everybody wins. Keep up the good work like your stuff.
