For a quick recording of a rehearsal or social media video I have 3 mic set up (Sontronic condenser for mono overhead, Audix D6 on the bass drum, and sm57 on the snare) going into audient asp800 > audient id44 For a more advanced session I usually go with 421 on toms, sm57 for both top and bottom snare, sometimes SM7B as a "knee" mic or hihat, Beyerdynamic M160/AKG C414 for rooms and Octava MK012 for overheads in XY

I'm running 12 mics through the console with a little EQ. For demos usually 4 mics Kick in, snare top, overheads.

I can't say that I have a go to, but there are some standouts like a Coles 4038 overhead(s), Josephson e22 on snare. I had great luck on a jazz drummer with Soyuz 012 fets on over heads. I love my Phoenix Audio preamps for drums, as well as CAPI VP28s and John Hardy M-2. Theres just so many great chains...

Love the OPX with Dante card, Ive got 8 ins and a headphone out from my home studio control room to any room in my house for tracking and I can take it to go as well. Would be nice if the OPX had output transformers on the preamps for dirtying things up but for clean gain its fantastic.

This guy has a hell of a linage and seems so humble; his point is success is opportunity meets preparation. I don’t have a set chain or go-to set up because I’m not that active in recording; I’m leaning more on mixing.

Gorden greatly inspired and influenced my drumming so I owe him a huge thanks! I remember my jaw dropped to the floor watching his Rhythm Alliance Conga Room performance a good 12 years ago. Loads of phenomenal drummers played on the same card (Chris Coleman, Teddy Campbell, Nick Smith etc) but Gorden's dynamic control, his sense of how to build the songs energy, his musicality, how he pushed and propelled the song forward, his timing (his "micro sense" of where the beat should be), his phrasing and accents... he just stood out to me. Even though usually I'm not a huge fan of these drum event chop fest performances, I became a huge G.C. fan ever since. Seeing in this interview how nice, down to earth and humble he is... what an inspiration, what a legend! (This is his performance I'm talking about. The audio is not so great but still you get a sense of his playing. + The smile on Chris Coleman's face is gold :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYm0kK16lKd_i5I )
