Studio Visit: Aliyah Al Awadi

Introducing Sarah Alagroobi in this video from our Artist Studio Visit series. Sarah is a multidisciplinary artist, from Sharjah and based in Abu Dhabi.
Watch as she categorizes the corners of her studio space as well as her art practices, in all the mediums she works with. She talks about materiality and existentialism in the work she does while struggling to define the work that she does.
Alagroobi was the co-curator for 'As We Gaze Upon Her,' a 421 exhibition presented in Fall 2021, emerging from our pilot Curatorial Development Program.
Sarah Alagroobi has an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London. She explores notions of culture and identity of both Middle Eastern and Western contexts through colonial discourse, including notions of whitewashing and ‘othering’. Her practice mines personal and collective experiences that portray an agile simplicity in expression of place, borders and a sense of belonging. She is the co-curator of BANAT Collective, a creative community that discusses intersectionality, feminism, gender and identity politics from a middle-eastern perspective. Her work has gathered the attention in leading design magazines ESTRO, ID and Close-Up and have been exhibited regionally and internationally at Somerset House, London, Salone del Mobile, Milan, Versus Art Project, Istanbul, Venice Biennale, Dutch Design Week, ME Collectors Room, Berlin and Abu Dhabi Art.

حصلت عالية على بكالوريوس الفنون الجميلة في تصميم الرسوم المتحركة مع تخصص فرعي في ممارسات التقييم الفني من جامعة زايد في عام 2020.
وكانت محررة وعضوة في بنات كوليكتف، المشروع الأهلي الذي يهدف إلى تمثيل الفن الذي يركز على المرأة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، كما كانت عضوة مختارة في استحواذ الشباب عام 2020 في مركز جميل للفنون.
وكانت أيضًا واحدة من الفنانين المشاركين في حفل التدشين لمبادرة 101 "رأسًا على عقب" (2020) في بيت 15 من تقييم منيرة الصايغ وغيث عبدالله بالإضافة إلى حصولها على منحة سلامة بنت حمدان للفنانين الناشئين بالتعاون مع كلية رود آيلاند للتصميم.
