After using the wood dye to colour match the neck repair, it would be best to removes the masking tape from the back of the neck before the clear coat. You can mist coat to either side of the repair to blend more seamlessly with the original lacquer and avoid the hard line that was left by the masking.

In the 80's, our bassist found a news paper headline that said "The Government has aids research funding approval"... So she cut out "The government has aids" and clear coated it to her bass. Was it a bad idea, yea, but everyone who saw that bass remembered it. So I get it. But I also love restoring them so win win really LOL
I like that you let alot of the old character remain on the instruments you repair.

Dear Friend, thank you so much for this video ! I was not aware that an Epiphone Flying V has been produced. As usual, you demonstrate an incredible skill, with calm and patience : the repair and the revarnishing of the neck are daring and fabulous, also the overall restoration is outstanding ! Interestingly, I thought that about the neck dive until I actually bought a Flying V, built by Burny in Japan. The secret is to move the strap button into the crook of the "V" just behind the bidge. Worked particulaly well with my bass.

Yes, its the Epiphone neck design, better than The one piece Gibson one, look at the Les paul defects.
@phayzyre1052 Жыл бұрын
@@danieldupuys2002 I know! Gibson used to build guitars with a scarf joint neck, a much better and stronger design in my opinion. Why they quit doing that is a mystery other than maybe a cost cutting measure. I love Gibson guitars but in the last 25 or so years they’ve done some silly shit and yes, they haven’t quite got their defects under control as they are still cranking out guitars with finish problems.

The brass scratchplate screws are very pretty, but look just a tiny bit oversized to me. I guess its very hard to get the exact right ones. Maybe a little more countersinking on the 'plate could sit them more flush? Anyway looks nice. Was longing to hear it played solidly with a pick at the end!

Given the tools you have, or in this case don't have, you do spectacular work. I personally would have refinished the entire neck, but I suspect you did it that way to show its battle scars. I also appreciate that you left all of its wear and tear intact, choosing to clean, instead of completely refinishing. With regard to the pick guard, may I suggest dipping it in a bath of hydrogen peroxide and exposing it to UV light; it will completely remove all of the yellowing and make it white again. Well done, it plays beautifully.

You're never gonna have that problem with a Fender. The curse of the broken Gibson neck or headstock. You'd think after all the decades of breakage Gibson would try and correct the problem. I guess it's Gibson's tradition in guitar design. Nice repair job! Unfortunately no matter how well the repair job is, they're never quite the same after.

Construtive criticism: Sorry but the paint in the back of neck result in a very bad work... You should paint all neck. And all your works you didnt remove the yellow on the old white plastic. Its could be done with a UV light (ODD Thinkering Channel teachs how to do) You didnt remove the rust properly on the metallic parts and you could replace the nickel plating in some restorations too. Restore Channels teachs how to do. You should polish the paints to remove the risks, marks with sandpapers 3000, 5000 and then polish... Your videos with this tips will be perfect...

When I saw how badly off that poor thing's neck was, I was horrified! But I had faith in your skills and as always you came through and brought this thing back from the dead. Excellent work, and I liked the more jazz and funk oriented lines you were playing as well.

Question: where do you find these guitars and basses in such need of a clean-up and repair?
The main value in the guitar is wood, everything else can be replaced. But the metal will gradually rise in price, there is less and less metal left in the world. I think in 100 years the guitar will be a very expensive commodity
The use of some of the tools when disassembling the instrument, almost made me sick 😱 And I would highly recommend a fret levelling after a neck repair… Just to polish the frets will not do it, when it comes to playability! And to achieve that kind of gloss on the laquer and the pick guard, without a machine, seems very unlikely. Also the ”gold” on the hard ware usually is so thin that if it is corrided, it polishes of…

You pretty much seem like you know what you are doing but you glue the nut to the rosewood of the fretboard not to the neck , that way if you need to take the nut back off you can just put a piece of wood in front of the nut and gently tap it and it will pop off with out taking any wood from the neck
