I started scratching reverse/hamster style because when I first started scratching in the 80s, I did not have a mixer, so I used the volume knob on my home stereo.

Thanks for the vid. I guess I kind of figured out the flare and crab based scratches were a bit better if you scratch reverse, but i always wondered what the advantages are of it explained by someone who does scratch reverse. I dig your tutorials, thanks. Peace and bless

When I scratch with my left right on the turntable I use the fader in regular mode. But I started a few weeks ago to learn to scratch with my right hand on the turntable and there I use the fader in hamster mode because as you said it feels more right and easier in the same time. Peace!

i have been scratching using regular style for so long. i have recently been trying to train myself with hampster style. it definetly is retrainimgyourself. usualy after a few minutes i will go back to regular style. im very comfortable with regular style with both hands but doing that hampster that has been a challege for me. ima push forward with it until i get it down.

I'm thinking of changing to hamster from regular, I've only just got comfortable with scratching but find my 2 click flares and crabs don't sound normal i tried the crab with hamster and it sounded better but I've got to completely learn all the basic scratches again

Hey Short-E! I love your channel and website, I always listen to the freebeats. I'm really beginner at DJ-ing and I have an IDJ3. Yeah I know it's much different cause it's digital, not vinyl. Will you ever show some tricks on digital deck or you never use those?

The first time I saw anything on scratching was watching the movie Scratch while in high school and watching DJ Shadow and Qbert on the video I saw the way they were scratching and noticed I naturally followed these two. Look up Qbert jam session on KZbin to see quite an influential scene!

I started djing when i was 13 now im 46 and i scratch hamster style my first mixer didnt have a fader just up and downs and two switches it was a realistic from radio shack.i got so use to pushing away, when i got a mixer with a fader i had to hook my turntables up in reverse. back then there was no mixer with a hamster switch.my other dj buddies would tease and say i scratch backwards.i found out that terminator x from public enemy scratch the same way i had the last laugh. djtrax909...

I was taught Hamster at 13 and now I’m 44. If I could do it again, I probably out if ease would have learned “normal”. Transforming and crabbing makes more sense non-hamster but I just can’t change now but I’m a pro TTblist and, with humility in tact, am better than most.
@genafk12 жыл бұрын
is it quite beneficial if you can actually use both reasonably well?
@The_Angry_BeEconomist10 жыл бұрын
Interesting you compare it to skateboarding. In skateboarding the pros skate regular/goofy and switch. So I suppose as a dj if you are progressing you should be able to do your cuts goofy and switch at a more advanced level.

I scratch hamster as well but I find it more difficult to do certain scratches like crab scratches. Took me forever to do it hamster but traditional came so much easier.

hey im just curious, where do you put the fader curve at? or do you change it for different cuts? Im just starting out and i realise the short curve is good for sharp cuts and in a way easier, but i also realise that a little longer curve gives more scope for different sounding cuts and is easier for me to not miss certain cuts altogether? can the difference just be compensated by practice? anyway im just curious to hear what you use

Yea I started regular and learned its 10 times easier to flare and do click flares hamster. I would recommend hamster, when you start getting into trickier scratches its easier to click, like orbits, boomerangs etc. ..... my 2 cents

hmm i like your scratch vids but i thought that was a poor explanation of hamster, your switching the fader cut sides so the fader is closed on the left instead of right side but whatever and ive never heard anyone call them "up faders"
