People never get to see a lot of the "Behind The Scene" moments where artists get so frustrated with their own work. Thank you so much for leaving that part of the video in there for other artists and more to see. Its good to see i'm not the only artist that gets so flustered when my painting isn't painting as well as I hoped! This is such a beautiful painting and well worth the time sweat and tears put into it!

My favourite KZbin videos are cooks who make recipes that haven't turned out quite right and taste and look terrible when usually they are great chefs, artists who mess up and 'throw tantrums' when usually they are skilled and talented, essentially videos that show imperfection as well as the triumphant creations and the very real human reactions. Beautiful painting, I really enjoyed the journey with this one.

bro i was a skater back in the days and watching vids of someone nosediving try- after try. It's a great feeling once they get it and you see how behind maybe 6 second s of cool footage there ist the dedication to eat dirt

Art is just art but your art is something else your paintings are so unique and beautiful

Bro, I just paused watching at 18:14 just to thank you for your transparency. We artist need to see the reality of a stressful piece that other artist go through. I think it's the most helpful thing you've done by keeping that part of the video in. It rarely goes as smooth as other KZbin artist make it look, so thank you for showing us the reality of art.

I’m an intermediate beginner so I really appreciate you keeping your meltdown in the video. I often get frustrated when I can’t get a painting exactly right and sometimes I don’t even start an idea for fear of messing it up. Thank you for showing me that everyone experiences this and to not give up! ❤

Videos like this are so important because they show that a process is way more than just “slap the sketch down and paint”, there’s multiple passes and trial and error. Turned out great, the struggle was worth it! 😊

I know that from my own art as well. So many painting will turn into beautiful art, it just sometimes need a bit of intense reflection and being patient 😅

@@annika93dk7 Sooo true. I am still learning to have that patience, I have a habit of trying to save time by diving right in and wind up having to tap out FAR too easily lmao

I think it was a good idea to show the strop because it wasn’t going the way you want it. It makes me feel I’m normal when I have a strop with mine. So thank you for sharing that. 😊 but we always get to the final look in the end.

Looked very challenging for sure! But overall, I’m really glad u were able to work through it :) Also, believe me, there r many moments where I want to rip up my artwork or throw a brush or two, but I think I’m the end, we all know that it won’t help. Sometimes, what I like to do is go outside first fresh air, have a break or two and stop. Then when I feel ready, I try again. Honestly, doing art can be both stressful and calming in a way and it can be the same with anything u like to do. So don’t be afraid to feel like u need to make everything perfect, we all make mistakes and we learn from them :)

Your painting is beautiful. I love how the thin glaze of oil gives it more dimension and really brings it to life. Don't worry about the meltdown. It happens to everyone. You did the best thing possible...walk away and calm down. I find that if I try to fix something when I'm angry I only make it worse. Go back to it when you are calm and thinking straight.

Great painting and credit to you for including your 'meltdown' which I think most painters experience at some point but keep it to themselves! For me it encourages me to feel I am not alone with the frustration of not getting the image the same as you visualise it, thank you!

Well done! I totally understand the bent muzzle. My sister was an artist that made extremely realistic latex masks and did a lovely wild cat (articulated jaw, teeth, etc.) and realized the muzzle on the clay form was crooked. Hated to do it but sliced the entire muzzle off to redo it. So hard, but it came out amazing, after. And I love the mirror trick. I have often used that!

I'm with you, hate painting rocks, so tedious, little reward. You did a GREAT job on this painting, too. I really enjoyed watching the process. Can you imagine painting a leopard or a cheetah with all the stripes and spots? lol I'd go mad!

Your willingness to share the vulnerable parts of the process are beautiful, and authentic. It really is a big part of the process, that many overlook the value in, and many get stuck in, believing they can not create good art. If we get stuck in this process, it can be devastating. But, pushing through is where we learn the good stuff. Thank you for your authenticity; it makes you an exceptional teacher.

I absolutely love your work! I am also grateful that you show the stress one puts themselves through on a painting. Till this episode, I thought you did not have those issues due to all your planning and prep work. I have a landscape painting that I moved to the other side of the room with the canvas facing the wall so I could not see it. It has been there for a year. Granted, I am not even a good amateur, but seeing you return and correct the issues has inspired and helped me a lot. Thanks for letting us see reality.

Daniel, I am a great admirer of your honesty and struggle as an artist. My very favorite of your paintings is ‘Snow Patrol’ a truly wonderful work. I too am a young painter (with a little over 50 years of experience...) and I too know only too well how difficult this activity can be. The painting you present today of a cougar however, bugs me... In the video, you struggle with the drawing of the head. It doesn't look quite right. And even though you 'fix' it after a long break, to my eyes, it still doesn't look right. What I am seeing, is a cougar with the lower part of its face twisted towards the viewer. I watched your video twice to be sure that my eyes were not deceiving me (but maybe they are!). If it was my painting, this is how I would fix it: I would draw a line across from one pupil to the other. Then, consider the triangle of the nose; the upper two vertices of that triangle form a line too. For the head of the cougar to appear correct on the page, the eye line and the nose line should be parallel - one must account for slight distortion due to parallel perspective (of course). Then the line of the mouth too must also follow this simple rule. In your painting this is not the case - To my eyes the lower part of the head of the cougar is twisted towards the viewer. My perceived fault is also present in your preliminary drawing. But of course I could be quite wrong - I would really have to see your work in person to be sure of my judgment.

I feel your pain. I experience this frustration a bit too often. Anatomy is hard. I actually did a cougar painting last year and id be embarrassed to admit how long it took to get the head right 😑

Have you decided against using a projector? I use one for the main lines and anchor parts, then hand-eye draw the rest. You can scan or photograph your own drawing and project that, so it is still yours and not from a photo.

Wow this is mindblowing! Also loved to see the planning work and your thoughts in the process. I got a question Daniel: When you’re doing an oil wash over acrylics, what kind of varnish do you use in the end? For acrylics or oils? Thank you. Always enjoying watching you’re videos. Keep your good work man.

Glad you showed your temper tantrum. In my case, I just leave a piece (sometimes for years), before it gets to me that it is unfinished, and I finally resume work on it (years later). I think that time away from the painting (but still in my studio), helps my subconscious mind to solve the problems so when I get back to it. . . it is like starting fresh from scratch
