Hey Gang! We've got a fun one today. Let's start off by showing you the end result of Mom's shower! It turned out absolutely beautiful, but since we didn't tile it, we couldn't show you that process. It just so happens we're building a shower in our current project from start to finish and we DO get to show you every step of the way on this one! Let's start with backer board and water proofing with our Schluter Kerdi. We stopped by the store to pick up some cement board and as fate would have it they were completely out, so we picked up this Triton board and fell in love. On top of that they had excellent customer service and apparently plan to roll out some awesome products so we'll be on the lookout! We can't wait to show you all of our tips on how to get a professional and stunning shower in your bathroom, and you can apply what we're showing you in these videos to most applications and challenges you face! Thanks for watching and we'll see ya on the next one!
Check out Sal and Landberg!

The diff in the seam tape coating is the resistance to the chemicals in the cement board and the thinset. Not needed for the new non cementitious backers.

Couple of notes for you so you could do better job on your next install. 1. Install your base first than membrane over with at least 3" fold onto walls and curb ( fold your corners into a gap between 2 boards- don't cut them ) next install your inside and outside corners at all junctions of base and walls keeping thinset to a minimum. Next install your membrane onto walls in horizontal layout ( not vertical as schluter guys recommend ) starting at the bottom and overlapping 2-3 inches follow with seals for pipes and valves. 2. After all above is completed use Schluter Coll on all base to walls and curb connections with 2 inch wide spread as well as all pipe seal connections. Side note- depending on availability in your region you might opt for Laticrete hydroban cementicious or at least Ardex 8+9. I have had great success with Hydroban cementicious. I personally run two coats over all joints smoothing second coat in all edges after few minute 4 inch taping knife keeping away from corners itself.

Me and my Dad have been using this backer-board here in South Texas for about 2-3 years now, the weight savings, score/snap and silica-free features are life changing! They carry it at our local Dal-Tile and Sutherlands store but last we checked they were all out, hoping they're in stock again. Also, I always wondered about which side to use but went with the rough side to be safe, glad to see that it's a a big issue. You guys definitely should look into getting yourself a collated screw gun to make putting the backer board even faster and more easily done by one person , if needed. I recently just got the Milwaukee drywall gun and the collated attachment for it, bought some Senco backerboard screws and a Makita 6in square bit drive and im ready to screw away. It's especially life changing if you have to screw down 1/4in boards for tiling upstairs. It's a MUST HAVE for that situation. Last little note, there is actually an even better backboard that we recently got to use in a big job a few months ago. It's called GoBoard. It's even lighter than the triton backer board, waterproof and made of an insulation type foam, much stiffer and rigid than the Shluter foam stuff. They make it in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1in, 2in. All you need to do is water proof the seams. Great stuff.

Both tapes are fiberglass and alkali resistant. Most of the time you only want to use the manufacturer recommended tape with the corresponding thin set. The glue that holds the tape fibers together can react differently depending on the chemical composition of the thin set. Most thin sets will be either potassium of sodium based. If you use the wrong tape with the wrong thin set it can cause the glue to break down and the tape to fail, which means you with get movement in the joint which can then cause the grout to crack. The Gray tape I believe has an extra silicone coating that protects the glue from reacting by putting a physical barrier between the thin set and the glue binding the fiberglass strands together. This extra coating is why is costs so much more.

Beautiful job on Mom’s shower. She’s fortunate to have family to keep her home sweet home as long as possible. My father had a bad stroke and was very fortunate to come back home for 7 more years. We did some quick adaptation to the bathroom as well and my brother and I built a hydraulic wheel chair lift so my mother could manage getting Dad in and out of the house alone. Really was rewarding to pay our folks back and keep them at home till their passing.

With Kerdi you usually just use drywall. That triton is overkill under Kerdi. Since triton is cement based you could have just liquid waterproofed it with aquadefense or redgard. My go to for a couple years is goboard, it’s waterproofed already you just have to seal the seams.
@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 2 жыл бұрын
Triton is not cement based. It’s gypsum-polymer. It’s only advantage is no silica issues. It’s also very low mass but not strong. It’s also not waterproof, definitely needs a Kerdi or similar membrane. Redgard is crap, is you want a liquid membrane, use Hydroban. This Triton is a knockoff of Widi board, only more fragile. There is a “waterproof” version that has integrated yellow membrane but imo it’s too fragile to be mounted to 16” spaced studs alone. The best method is still a high density waterproof gyp-board like Denshield then float mud to square the walls and then a properly installed membrane barrier. This install is not best building practices but hopefully will provide 10-15 years service life.
@krehbein
@krehbein 2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelM-to4sg Good info. My memory is that wedi board is a foam type core with a mesh embedded in cementatious layer on the outer layer. Are you saying you float mud over the denshield? Seems odd.
@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 2 жыл бұрын
@@krehbein Widi has no silica, not cement based, similar to Triton. Yes, we install Denshield then lathe and float w/FatMud. The Denshield is sufficiently waterproof except joints and screw holes which are taped and troweled w/waterproof thinset. Our current choice is Cementitious Hydroban but we’ve used others in past. In the unlikely event walls are dead flat and square, you don’t need to float FatMud. Unless the walls were built w/precision skill and engineered lumber, they are never flat & square. If you’re building a steam shower, it’s highly recommended a waterproof membrane such as Kerdi be installed over FatMud, otherwise tiling directly over FatMud is good. We personally use Hydroban liquid membrane in all niches and behind all mosaics on standard showers. The vast majority of our builds these days have at least one steam shower in the home.

My first house in middle tn was framed in solid red oak lumber. The bathroom stud walls were strong as could be but horrible out of plane. Looked like the whole thing was framed fresh off the sawmill and they all dried in place. I was encouraged to cut full length custom firring strips free hand on my table saw. It was a very complicated project for me at the time as it was my first experience getting into finish work and tiling. The end result was TOTALLY worth all the trouble and the finished product was beautiful.

Magnesium-oxide boards are a 3-1 solution: 1) Magnesium-salt absorbs moist, and this causes rot in wood. 2) Magnesium-salt causes corrosion in steel brackets and screws. 3) When the magnesium-salts reacts with moist, it disappeares from the board causing the board to disintegrate (the board "cries" salty droplets in a moist climate). MgO boards can be used in dry and warm constructions, though.

taking inspiration from this video to do my own bathroom remodel, but out of curiosity, why go with a backer board, then schluter membrane ontop of it vs doing the schluter fiam board directly to studs? Seems like cement board will be a bit more sturdy, but youre saving time using the foam board on the walls, and then only doing the floor mud and membrane on the floor.

Interestingly enough Schluter is a German company. The waterproofing membrane Kerdi has been around since 1987, but I didn't see it in the US until the early 2000's. I think the system is fairly adaptable so you could install it over bricks with a thin foam board shower pan (which they sell).

I've only ever used cement board OR Kerdi over drywall. Never had a problem either way. Never used both together.

Hey Stud Pack! I've used a full Kerdi-Board system when I did a bathroom build before, it was fairly easy to use but rather expensive. Would you say that this Backer board + Kerdi Membrane system is a cost saving? I have a large basement bathroom shower to do in my future and this system might be my saving grace! Keep up the great work and the awesome videos coming!

The thing with mag board is it can be corrosive to steel. It needs to very carefully made or you need to use stainless steel fasteners.

here in Florida we have started using a product called " Go Board ." it's made of polyisocyanurate , made by a company called Johns Manville , size is 3x5x1/2 . Lowes ad says it weighs 7.5 lbs per sheet but i think it's much lighter than that ( probably a typo when they wrote the ad ) . seriously you can fly this stuff as easily as a Frisbee ! this stuff is AMAZING ! cuts easily , razor/utility knife . . . no mess , minimal cleanup , it's waterproof and it cuts our time TREMENDOUSLY . with cement board it takes a lot of time to cut , install and clean up . with Go board my time is reduced by 3/4 ! yes it costs more , it's about $25 per sheet , but the upside is huge . after talking with my boss , we decided we will only use this product going forward . it's a total game changer ! the stuff you used here requires 1/8 spacing , the go board requires no spacing . also , we coat the surface with Mapelastic Aquadefense Liquid Membrane . then just apply your tile mud and go like mad !

thanks for your info. This was mentioned above in the comments a couple of times and Stud Pack saw the comments about Go Board and replied with thanks. I appreciate your info as I think I will try this Go Board for my first ever shower build in our lower level bathroom renovation.

@@zanyabains2390 it's a great product and i think you will like it . even with an " out of square cut ' it is easy to use . by out of square i mean sometimes the walls are not exactly square .

Okay dropping a comment ! How to cut costs with quality considering the price of Schluter products here some suggestions with way less time consuming though ! - For the wall showers 👉 Hardbacker 1/2” with “hydro defense” = $30/ each (eliminate Schluter paper like you said “bullet proof”) - Redgard Seamtape on edges = $28/roll - Plastic Niche from Redi brand can be screwed by Same Starhead screws - 1 tube of heavy duty Quality Sylicon caulk = $12 instead $30 from Schluter - Threshold (old school) = few pieces + same hardbacker coverage ! Just ideas how to abreviate time consuming + saving money with quality without too much science 🧬
