Hey Gang! We've got a fun one today. Let's start off by showing you the end result of Mom's shower! It turned out absolutely beautiful, but since we didn't tile it, we couldn't show you that process. It just so happens we're building a shower in our current project from start to finish and we DO get to show you every step of the way on this one! Let's start with backer board and water proofing with our Schluter Kerdi. We stopped by the store to pick up some cement board and as fate would have it they were completely out, so we picked up this Triton board and fell in love. On top of that they had excellent customer service and apparently plan to roll out some awesome products so we'll be on the lookout! We can't wait to show you all of our tips on how to get a professional and stunning shower in your bathroom, and you can apply what we're showing you in these videos to most applications and challenges you face! Thanks for watching and we'll see ya on the next one!
Check out Sal and Landberg!

Couple of notes for you so you could do better job on your next install. 1. Install your base first than membrane over with at least 3" fold onto walls and curb ( fold your corners into a gap between 2 boards- don't cut them ) next install your inside and outside corners at all junctions of base and walls keeping thinset to a minimum. Next install your membrane onto walls in horizontal layout ( not vertical as schluter guys recommend ) starting at the bottom and overlapping 2-3 inches follow with seals for pipes and valves. 2. After all above is completed use Schluter Coll on all base to walls and curb connections with 2 inch wide spread as well as all pipe seal connections. Side note- depending on availability in your region you might opt for Laticrete hydroban cementicious or at least Ardex 8+9. I have had great success with Hydroban cementicious. I personally run two coats over all joints smoothing second coat in all edges after few minute 4 inch taping knife keeping away from corners itself.

I owned a residential HVAC business for over 30 years. Mys son started coming on the job with me when he had days off at school. We worked side by side for many of the 30 years. One of the hardest things about retiring was not being with him every day. We both learned many life lessons thru working together. It was very rewarding for me.

The diff in the seam tape coating is the resistance to the chemicals in the cement board and the thinset. Not needed for the new non cementitious backers.

THE REASON I LOVE THIS CHANNEL: When i was about 19-20 years old, i started working for my buddies family company. His dad started a kitchen and bath remodeling / painting / handyman business. It was quite successful, and I was working 40 hrs a week while going to school. It was one of the most fun and rewarding jobs i had ever has and i have saved myself thousands with what i have learned in the trade. Long story short, my buddys dad was absolutely hilarious and quirky. An all around good guy. He was like a second father to me. Paul reminds me so much of him and i just enjoy watching these videos and remembering all the hard work i used to do with them in this industry. When Paul took his finger and swiped the thinset off that 90 degree cut on the risers, I laughed my butt off at his facial expression afterwards!! 😆😆😆 My old boss used to do that exact same thing! Keep up the hard work and amazing content boys, i enjoy every minute of it!!!

Re: backer board. I have used Kerdi board in the past but it is very expensive. My latest project I used Go-Board by Johns Manville. It is a third the cost of Kerdi and easier to waterproof the joints and screw holes. No thinset required for waterproofing. Cuts with a utility knife. 8 pounds per 3by5 sheet.

The gray mesh tape is coated for alkali resistance. Most thin-set have alkali in them and when you use non-coated not immediately but over time the chemical in the thin set will break down that mesh so the gray tape with the special coating resist the chemical in the thin-set. The standard mesh you would use with spackling or drywall mud etc. none of those products you would want to use in a wet area like a shower.

Love your channel. I'm a tile contractor in SC. I started using Go Board by Johns Manville a couple years ago. I love it! Light weight like kerdi board but very stiff like backer board. Waterproof on both sides and cuts with a knife. Has it's own sealant as well. I cover all the seams withe kerdi band and use schluter pans and drains. You can order it at Lowes and some tile stores stock it. And it's also very reasonably priced. Use it once and you won't use anything else on your walls!

Me and my Dad have been using this backer-board here in South Texas for about 2-3 years now, the weight savings, score/snap and silica-free features are life changing! They carry it at our local Dal-Tile and Sutherlands store but last we checked they were all out, hoping they're in stock again. Also, I always wondered about which side to use but went with the rough side to be safe, glad to see that it's a a big issue. You guys definitely should look into getting yourself a collated screw gun to make putting the backer board even faster and more easily done by one person , if needed. I recently just got the Milwaukee drywall gun and the collated attachment for it, bought some Senco backerboard screws and a Makita 6in square bit drive and im ready to screw away. It's especially life changing if you have to screw down 1/4in boards for tiling upstairs. It's a MUST HAVE for that situation. Last little note, there is actually an even better backboard that we recently got to use in a big job a few months ago. It's called GoBoard. It's even lighter than the triton backer board, waterproof and made of an insulation type foam, much stiffer and rigid than the Shluter foam stuff. They make it in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1in, 2in. All you need to do is water proof the seams. Great stuff.

From the mid 1970's thru the begining of the 21 cenutury I used alot of 3x5 wonderboard, used a dry pack cement sloping for the shower pan. Usually the waterproof liner was connected to the double flanged drain, fat mud for the shower entry. The tile layout was based of measurements of the tile verses the areas that were to be tiled. There was usually extra framing required and sometimes plumbing. You gave a very good video, thanks.

Both tapes are fiberglass and alkali resistant. Most of the time you only want to use the manufacturer recommended tape with the corresponding thin set. The glue that holds the tape fibers together can react differently depending on the chemical composition of the thin set. Most thin sets will be either potassium of sodium based. If you use the wrong tape with the wrong thin set it can cause the glue to break down and the tape to fail, which means you with get movement in the joint which can then cause the grout to crack. The Gray tape I believe has an extra silicone coating that protects the glue from reacting by putting a physical barrier between the thin set and the glue binding the fiberglass strands together. This extra coating is why is costs so much more.

Love watching anything that shows anyone working with integrity and the desire to do it right the first time! I've been tiling for 20 years and the only call back I've ever had was the first one I did. I made it right. One observation I have here is while I really like the apparent ease of use of this Triton board, since you used Schluter as your waterproofing membrane, does it even really matter what the substrate is? I ask this because the first time I used schluter-kerdi over a decade-and-a-half ago I watched their corporate video showing how to install the Kerdi for tiling a shower and there instructional video showed them installing it over basic white drywall. I assumed the reason for this was because if there is a leak in the waterproofing water is going to eventually find the studs and failure will occur. I'm about to redo my parents bathroom also - great job on this one!

My first house in middle tn was framed in solid red oak lumber. The bathroom stud walls were strong as could be but horrible out of plane. Looked like the whole thing was framed fresh off the sawmill and they all dried in place. I was encouraged to cut full length custom firring strips free hand on my table saw. It was a very complicated project for me at the time as it was my first experience getting into finish work and tiling. The end result was TOTALLY worth all the trouble and the finished product was beautiful.

Can you really only use caulking at the seams? Using Kerdi, at the seams you need to use tape and overlap the adjacent membranes by 2" - all done with thin set. I would think caulking would not last too long. Maybe this is in the directions for the GoBoard product?

THE MESH TAPE. Ones used for backer and tile are ALKALI RESISTANT. Just like the coated backer screws. Thinset is VERY basic on the PH scale, and it can corrode regular nails and screws (hot dipped galvanized and the gold colored ones) as well as non-alkali resistant mesh tape over time.

I think you shouldn’t have to start calling the company before they put a product out …all the information on installation should be readily available. If I went to put the stuff up and I couldn’t find the adequate easily accessible information in writing I would pass this stuff by. I don’t wanna be the guinea pig by putting the stuff up.

@@theloneviking9145 while I don’t disagree w you in principle that’s not what’s going on here. it’s not that there wasn’t information, note Jordan says he watched multiple videos on this product, but instead they had a specific question that wasn’t answered in the info they could find. It turned out that the reason they weren’t finding the answer was bc there isn’t a specific side that has to face out. Perhaps the sales person at the counter knew that too but forgot or it didn’t come to mind to mention to Paul.

@@arsenicjones9125 My mistake , I didn’t hear that part about them watching the videos (I had it playing in the background while I was working in the garage). You just made me look up the Triton board product that actually looks really interesting… going to read up more about it. Thanks

@@theloneviking9145 no trouble we all make mistakes. I only noticed the statement about videos cuz I watched it twice bc I was so flabbergasted that they answered the phone and all his questions right there so fast. I hope triton does well and other companies take notes on how to treat a customer

I love the both the product been using for a few years now . Perfect on every job . Only difference I like to demand is a flexi quality sealer on tiling joints around floor to wall and on corners , same tone as grout.

There is a debate that has been going on. To drop the backer board in the shower pan or don't drop the backer board down in the shower pan. Is there any reason you did? Run your backboard to the floor? I know you will kerdi everything in the next video, but there is some that will say you still need to not run the backer board to the floor, cause water can wick into your studs. I would like to hear your thoughts

If you are using a waterproof membrane over a poured base, and banding on/up the corners, wrapping all corners where wall board meets the floor, You CAN RUN THE BOARD TO THE FLOOR. There should never be "wicking" in this situation. In a rubber bladder pan installation NEVER run the board to the floor

With Kerdi you usually just use drywall. That triton is overkill under Kerdi. Since triton is cement based you could have just liquid waterproofed it with aquadefense or redgard. My go to for a couple years is goboard, it’s waterproofed already you just have to seal the seams.
@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 2 жыл бұрын
Triton is not cement based. It’s gypsum-polymer. It’s only advantage is no silica issues. It’s also very low mass but not strong. It’s also not waterproof, definitely needs a Kerdi or similar membrane. Redgard is crap, is you want a liquid membrane, use Hydroban. This Triton is a knockoff of Widi board, only more fragile. There is a “waterproof” version that has integrated yellow membrane but imo it’s too fragile to be mounted to 16” spaced studs alone. The best method is still a high density waterproof gyp-board like Denshield then float mud to square the walls and then a properly installed membrane barrier. This install is not best building practices but hopefully will provide 10-15 years service life.
@krehbein
@krehbein 2 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelM-to4sg Good info. My memory is that wedi board is a foam type core with a mesh embedded in cementatious layer on the outer layer. Are you saying you float mud over the denshield? Seems odd.
@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 2 жыл бұрын
@@krehbein Widi has no silica, not cement based, similar to Triton. Yes, we install Denshield then lathe and float w/FatMud. The Denshield is sufficiently waterproof except joints and screw holes which are taped and troweled w/waterproof thinset. Our current choice is Cementitious Hydroban but we’ve used others in past. In the unlikely event walls are dead flat and square, you don’t need to float FatMud. Unless the walls were built w/precision skill and engineered lumber, they are never flat & square. If you’re building a steam shower, it’s highly recommended a waterproof membrane such as Kerdi be installed over FatMud, otherwise tiling directly over FatMud is good. We personally use Hydroban liquid membrane in all niches and behind all mosaics on standard showers. The vast majority of our builds these days have at least one steam shower in the home.

Yeah I was confused about this as well. Maybe I missed it but I don’t know why this is a video about a backer board since it doesn’t seem to be serving a different purpose than a drywall backer for a Kerdi application.
