For India, employment based (EB2, EB3, EB3 Other) green cards take a long time to get in USA. After graduation from US university, you need to find an employer to sponsor for 3-yr H-1B visa (max 6-yr with renewal). During this period, you need to apply for Labor Cert with Labor Dept, to prove that you are not stealing jobs from Americans and PRs. This involves advertising your position in local newspapers and trade magazines with your salary. If anyone applies, then employer (and immigration lawyer) will need to explain why you are the best candidate and not the others. Once Labor Cert is granted, then you can proceed with PR application pending on visa availability. For India, there is a 10+ year queue on EB2 & EB3 green cards; and the queue is getting longer. A lot of things can happen in 10 years.

In Canada, "software engineer" is regulated by province with licensing. You'll need to have a 4-yr Bachelor degree in engineering to call yourself software engineer. Software developer and programmer are not regulated in Canada.
