I eat a ridiculous amount of carbs on most days, and as long as I keep my fat intake low I never seem to gain weight from it. The fact that the body only seems to store carbs as fat as a last option makes sense, because otherwise I would be 400 pounds by now 😂

I love the missing calorie mystery. Of course, the other takeaway, which you mention but needs to be really hammered, is that when you follow a HC diet, every gram of fat you eat *will* get pushed into storage. This is also why people on keto diets have to be careful to restrict their protein as well as carbs. Since protein also stimulates insulin release, albeit somewhat less than carbs, a high-protein high-fat meal will cause a substantial amount of the fat eaten to be deposited into fat cells. I think this is why so many people plateau on keto diets well before they achieve goal weight. It's just really hard to eat almost no carbs and limit protein as well. It's not easy to do HCLF and keep fat really low, but between the two I'd say it's more sustainable than strict keto, having done both.

Really great how you're always backing up your spew with studies, unlike many other channels, which have only spew. EDIT: And it's really refreshing after many years of keto spew -- which worked for me in the 1st week ( awesome ) and then never again matching those losses, living with compromised energy and cravings, attaining the coveted 'fat adaptation' which was a big meh... Now to find carbs again. yes. Bless you child

Hey Miche, I know this vid is 5 years old already and maybe I am late to the party haha...but I love love love your videos, and am really grateful that I found you. I am also trying to recover from 20+ years of disordered eating...in January this year a strict Keto Diet finally helped me out of the binge and purge-circle, but I realized pretty soon, that my body didnt like keto at all (I had the itchiest keto rash for over 2 months, also I am actually almost vegan and had to implement a lot of milk products, which my body and stomach also didnt like. And I am not even talking about the social problems that come with eating keto (restaurants etc). So now I am slowly trying to eat kiiind of intuitive...still try to take care of added sugar and gluten and I am still a bit too used to the high fat because of keto. I would love to try high carb low fat... could you, by any chance, recommend a page with recipes or just general ideas for meals? As I am a bit lost at the moment... Thank you so much for your useful and great content! Greeting from Fania

It makes sense because in nature all animals do is eat all day and they aren't fat. If an animal eats a diet that isn't meant for them (such as how cats and dogs get fat) than they will get fat. If an animal eats their right, natural diet, then it will be highly unlikely that one will gain weight.

I hope I will lose weight with HCLF diet because since june (5 months now omg) I'm recovered from anorexia nervosa ( it lasted 6 years), I gained weight (mostly with a lot of chocolate = lot of fat 😐), and since one or two months I eat HCLF but I can't lose any weight...I overshot my weight set-point! I do water retention a lot too. I readed also that carbs, even in a huge quantity can makes you fat. I'm totally lost as you can see 🙄 do you think I will lose all the extra weight with a huge quantity of carbs, even after eating disorder? Because I love so much carbs and some vegans scared me with their weight gain on a HCLF diet with the calorie in/calorie out theory... I'm so sorry to bother you, but I loveeeee your videos and I'm very curious 😍 (sorry for my english btw, I'm French so I am able to make mistakes)

This is confusing didn't the debunk the fat is bad theory with several studies? What about all the people becoming obese after they increased sugar in the food to make up for the fat they took out. There is a study somewhere to prove every freaken theory bias if you want it to. Was this study replicated with the same results? How is it carnivore and keto people are losing weight and having positive health outcomes? None of the info anybody gives seems to make any sense. It's so frustrating.

Ok, so then how is fat tissue created in your body? From eating protein and fat only? Then why some diets like Atkins and Dukan which are high protein & very low carbs are such a success? I've followed the Dukan diet for 2 months and I ate as much as I liked without counting calories, but only protein and fat, keeping carbs at a minimum. Lost on average about 2 kg / week

I'm surprised at how little fat they burned since they were sedentary. I thought that the major energy source would be fat, but it was only 20%. Does this mean that the high carb meal turned to favoring glucose burning? I didn't think that effect would last all day though. I thought it would go back to normal after an hour or so
@MichePhD
@MichePhD 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. I believe the gram amount of fats may have been normal, but because extra calories were being expended after the overfeeding, it was lower as a percentage of total substrate metabolism.

Wait, by that logic, people on the keto diet should not be losing weight due to the large amount of fat the diet suggests.
@ubizmo
@ubizmo 6 жыл бұрын
The keto diet attempts to keep insulin levels continuously low so that fat cells can release fat to be used as fuel. When insulin levels are up this is virtually impossible. Since protein also stimulates insulin release, a keto diet for weight loss must also limit protein, so that at least 75% of energy is from fat alone. On the HCLF diet, body fat gets burned, as Vegan Miche explains in this video, presumably during the time between meals when insulin levels fall. And part of the HCLF approach is that the fat restriction improves insulin sensitivity so this can happen.

@@MichePhD Well, now I am intrigued! I will look for those videos! Thank you. I can say I was straight Keto for awhile, now low carb. I find my body still performs well energy wise on anything between 50-100 grams of carbs per day. I source these mainly from vegetables but I do have many keto and non keto snacks in my pantry. I eat proteins and healthy fats as well for satiety. I also eat fruits often which was a BIG NO NO on keto. Overall, keto made me feel more in control, less fatigued, no cravings and crashes but the diet was just so boring after awhile. Very limited unless you spend time cooking your own dishes all the time which I am not big into lol. The key for me is keeping processed sugar at bay as that is what causes the crashes and low energy in me. Thank you for replying!
