PhD researcher breaks down a scientific study (linked below) to find out how much weight you gain from overeating sugar, to see if it supports the anecdotal evidence from high carb low fat vegans who claim they're able to eat so much without gaining weight. I talk about how much of that sugar and carbohydrate you can turn into fat via de novo lipogenesis, the specific macronutrient ratios and amounts the participants were eating, whether eating more fat or carbs increases de novo lipogenesis more, whether being obese or a healthy weight affects how many carbs you turn into fat, how much the process varies between individuals, why we do it in the first place, and more! (This study involves overeating by ~1000 calories, or 50% above maintenance intake, on a standard American diet.)

its true, talking from my experience. i would eat 3k-4k cals a day high carb, low fat - lot of potatoes and veggie pizzas, white flour ! pastas. no weight gain. when i started eating the same amount of cals with foods full of fat (for ex. tiramisu)i instantly gained FAT. was very interesting for me as well. btw im 5'4 100lbs right now for reference. also in the past i found it interesting when i eat a LOT of nut butter for some days i gain fat again, even though im not overeating much in cals at all. never gain weight when i overeat rice! when i was kid i was skinny and i remember once i ate one jar of nutella (which i never had before in my life) and cellulite appeared on me for the first time! i was like what the heck. dont be afraid of carbs ppl! just avoid fat and enjoy your bananas hahahah they are not gonna harm you, also regulate your appetite on long term ;)

So what's making you think that the carbs don't turn to fat in significant amount? - in caloric surplus body will always prioritize glucose as a source of energy and will store fatty acids in the adipose tissue instead doing the opposite - burning fat and storing glucose via de novo lipogenesis; which is what this study shows - de novo lipogenesis was minimal since almost all the energy requirements were met by carbs solely. Is there a study where they had very low fat in the diet while being in similar caloric surplus using very high carbs? It just makes sense that de novo lipogenesis would be tenfold higher than in this study.

i dont understand everything, but as a carb lover i feel you are a champion, and you even seem to be saying sugar is not the devil, others are saying it is. I have a friend who is not looking good on Keto diet trying to combat diabetes, has gained a lot of weight. Diet wars, Keto is past its high point and is losing steam as diet fad. You should have a video where you debate a low carb keto type, mano a mano, or woman to woman, it would probably end in a draw but there might be some wounds or a victor.😀

Nice video. There's just one concern with a high sugar diet: it is known to disrupt and injure endothelial function. And if you have a runaway bacterial overgrowth in your gut, that's a double-whammy of trouble. Of course these can be mitigated with plenty of aerobic exercise, and with supplementing with glycine and choline. But there there's also the issue of the sugar feeding tumors. Best just stick with fruit as much as possible.

Great video. Fact of the matter is that the whole "calories in/calories out" idea completely violates the first two laws of thermodynamics helps further explain why all of these cases and instances of CICO not working. Would be interesting to see what it was exactly the subjects were eating in regards to their carbs/fat, as a stick of butter is not the same as eating pumpkin seeds. The body is incredibly complex, and peoples' lives are complex to the point its pretty much impossible to account for every factor. I found people would be better off measuring how much food people eat based on their level of satiety, rather than calories, since that is pretty much how every other animal on earth measures how much they eat and not all "calories" (since we cant technically consume a calorie), carbs/proteins/fats are the same. Thank you for your videos and work, incredibly valuable info/perspective

I would really love if you could respond to this comment, I just have one question about this. I am a huge proponent of high carb low fat and it is the diet I follow. However I’m just curious in this context, is it possible that de novo lipogenesis is it down regulated or rather less used in this instance because of the already excess fat being in taken? Have you ever found any studies on de novo lipogenesis where the test subjects are actually taking in super low dietary fats? I’ve researched and looked around myself and I have never found it unfortunately they always seem to have a minimum of 20% calories from fat. Very curious about that

Sorry about the delay, youtube notifications for comments is terrible lately so I rarely see any on old videos. That's actually why I'm starting a Discord soon, for just these kinds of excellent questions! Yes, I have seen studies with as low as ~10% fat looking at DNL. It does seem like DNL gets upregulated on a very low fat diet--I'll need to research more to see how significant an impact that upregulation could be expected to have on weight etc. Adding it to my video topics list!

It works for me. When I eat a mixed diet, even if it is whole food based, I can go to 2100-2200 calories after which I start to gain fat. I weigh every ingredient before cooking and am accurate at calorie counting. But when I do high carb low fat, even if I have a lot of sugar (white sugar), I can go to 3400 calories and till LOSE FAT! I am not a vegan or vegetarian though. I consume skimmed milk when doing high carb low carb. Low fat high carb gives me a lot of leverage as compared to a mixed diet. Similar thing happens when I go low carb high fat (ketogenic) but I don't feel much good on that. So I do an occasional day of low carb high carb when I eat my nuts, seeds, eggs, and meat. This has helped me lose fat while smashing in calories, being energetic, and have excellent blood work.

@bhojjadamotabanda
@bhojjadamotabanda 2 жыл бұрын
@@atozbodyfitness6311 No it doesn't. The mechanism of fat storage are different for different source nutrients. Fat gets stored as is. Carbs are preferably "burned" by the body, excess is stored as glycogen, when glycogen stores are full and there is still excess, body increases metabolism to "burn off" excess carbs upto a certain limit and if there are still excess carbs, conversion to fat causes about 20% of the calories to be used. So if the fat in the diet is very low, you geta lot of leverage to eat without gaining fat (triggering DNL or De Novo Lipogenesis). A quote from the study "Glycogen storage capacity and de novo lipogenesis during massive carbohydrate overfeeding in man" says, "When the glycogen stores are saturated, massive intakes of carbohydrate are disposed of by high carbohydrate-oxidation rates and substantial de novo lipid synthesis (150 g lipid/d using approximately 475 g CHO/d)". Energy ratio of carbs to fats is 4:9, and considering we get 150g fat storage from 475g carbs, 29% of the calories are lost by increased rate of oxidation and conversion costs. The key to take advantage of this phenomenon is take keep the percentage of fat extremely low with excess carbs (less than 10% of calories) else the fat will directly get stored. The small amount of fat ingested is utilized for necessary functions instead.

It's defined by how high your fat intake is. Carbs are not supposed to linger in the blood stream for too long. High blood sugar is dangerous. Its the job of insulin to regulate blood sugar. It's primary job is shuttling nutrients (Carbs) into cells to create energy. Fat coats the blood, make it thickers, so rather than insulin using it to create energy, it stores it as fat. Too much sugar, oils, Salt, Dairy, fat is toxic for the body. The body only needs trace elements of fat which you can get from fruit and veg.

your body needs fat a for a number of other functions. in the absence of dietary fat from your food, it will mostly likely take it from your fat stores for these processes obviously, you will probably not find any studies on this because the lobbyists want to demonize sugar and force everyone to eat low carb or keto to promote more dairy and meat consumption i have done HCLF for a few weeks now and the fat is melting off. i just keep my fat below 30g per day.

Been curious about this after watching Durianrider and his entourage but trying to find multiple sources to weed out any potential liars. I'm curious as to why you wouldn't gain weight on sugar. I would think this would only be true eating until reasonable satisfaction, and not eating as much as you physically can. After all I watched EricTheElectric munch down 3kg of pure sugar in the form of a cube (yeah there was some protein and fat too). I have heard that conversion of sugar to fat is about 75% efficient so if you eat 3g (12kcal) of sugar, then 1 gram of fat can be made and 3kcal of thermal losses in the sugar conversion machine. Whereas fat to fat stores is close to 100% efficient and I'm not sure about excess Calories in the form of protein. As far as the Calories, I actually believe the opposite - that if the energy budget is spent on mainly carbohydrate, less Calories will be consumed for the same satisfaction. I've had the experience of eating high fat meals and thinking "Really? That many Calories? It felt like a small snack!" The other thing is carbohydrates restock glycogen. If it is low, you will feel fairly gutless when it comes to anything physical. The engine is sputtering a bit with only fat, thus doesn't output as many horsepower or spends more of the day inactive or sleepy, and doesn't get through as many Calories than someone with an all day sugar rush.
@TimpBizkit
@TimpBizkit 2 жыл бұрын
I'm also wondering whether the person with the added carbs and fat used a higher ratio of carbs to fat to fuel their day, so the person gained extra weight not from conversion of carbs, but from replacement of fat usage with carb usage, thus more fat was stored than the extra fat eaten because some fat was not used which would have been used if the person ate less carbs.

The problem with nutritional science is that people doing the "science" are approaching it from an idealogical perspective. Or to put it another way confirmation bias. I would love to see a vegan attempt to prove keto is the best diet or conversely a meat eater prove vegan diet is the best, that way we can eliminate the bias from the conversation. As a non scientist I have to take your word that you know what you're talking about, but for all I know you're just cherry picking certain papers to back up your stance. This is true of the keto/lchf crowed as well.

Vegan is about source of foods and keto is about the macronutrient composition. They are different things. There are many vegans who do a keto diet. Just today I saw a video by a vegan that how keto diet is the best. And they quoted some study they found where vegans on an Atkins diet are the longest lived. And there are many meat eaters who do a high carb low fat diet (large percentage of bodybuilders during the cutting phase). The studies she is quoting in the video are about macronutrients and not about vegan. Those studies themselves don't say anything about plant/animal sources. Do't confuse those two things.

Thanks for pointing that out, I ended up cutting that out of the video (along with many other things) to save time! First, other studies show the same approximate rate of DNL (at least 5 cited in the discussion), this one was just a particularly nice method so I chose this one as the example. This particular study wasn't aiming to show that sugar doesn't lead to much DNL (and they barely discussed the low rate of DNL, they focused more on how it doubled)--the goal of the study was to test the differences between sucrose and glucose in DNL. And they found no results there. Here is another paper from Berkeley that was not funded by industry, showing

i don’t like the message of this video. One premise: from all the diet i’ve tried and tested i (on me) the best is whole food high carb super low fat diet: lot of veggies, lot of fruits, lean meat, egg whites.. This is the one i like the most and the one that keeps me more satiate. Say so: the message that it’s difficult to gain wheight by overeating carbs is FALSE. Sure.. if you eat in a surplus your body will tend to burn all the carbs (cause they are the favourite fuel source) and store only the fat (cause they are already “fat”); but if you eat 200 calories in a surplus: 60% carbs 40% protein 0% fat all those 200 calories will be turned into fat (from carbs and maybe some also from protein) calories in surplus are calories in surplus! sure as hell!!! i’ve done many many time on me and when i want to “bulk” a little bit in increase the amount of beetroot (and nothing else, so i’m still on a almost zero fat diet) and the weight (and fat and hopefully some muscle) goes on. Stop spreading this misconception: exess calories makes you fat, both from carbs, fat or protein!!!

Fats aren't bad, they were bad here because they were combined with high amounts of carbohydrates.

People need to understand it's not single macronutrient u should blame but your overall lifestyle and how much energy u ingest in the first place.
