I switched to calisthenics once I became a father. I was an avid gym goer and was quite strong. However, by switching to a body-weight based workout routine, I noticed that my recovery time was quicker, my grip strength is the same, my muscle mass is pretty much the same (natural ecotomorph), I am less sore when I wake up in the morning, and I can keep up with my kids playing in the backyard or sports field as they age into teenagers. - Pullups/Chinups (using different grips) - Pushups (using the floor, chairs, stair, etc.) - Lunges (floor or one foot on a chair)

@giorhivers1672 What I mean is that lifting free weights and building muscle in the gym is a totally different ball game than calisthenics. I would know. I tried an American Ninja Warrior test course because I figured, since I'm a decently strong guy in the gym, that I'd be good at the shows course. I was wrong. I can do normal pull-ups, but I can't hop the bar from 1 level to the next up the ladder 20 times.

@@Madworld8975 . Anyone can push weights around. That's not a skill. I lifted weights at the gym for 15+ years. I would know. @phantom6276 it's exactly the same ball game. Both produce stimulus on the muscle and cause hypertrophy and strength gain. If you couldn't do the ninja warrior course you just weren't strong enough regardless of how you train. Literally search videos of the top ninja warrior guys and they almost all utilizes free weights. Idk why people love to separate free weight and calisthenics like they are both a different beast. I could do 50 push ups. Now i stopped doing it in one set. I do 15 reps of slow controlled full range push ups. I do 4 sets. This is much more harder than i thought. Same way I could do only 8 to 12 pull ups. I am thinner than many. So i don't think my 12 rep is impressive. I am also 39 yr old. Now what i do is i don't go for all out one set. I do controlled slow pull up reps of 5 for 4sets. The gain in strength is similar to weight training. Once in a while i do the one rep max out. I also do assisted pull ups like 25 reps three sets. I keep varying my routine so different fibers work at different times so there is an overall gain. I still plan to go to gym so once in a while i can check how strong and fit i am.

Practical information for newbies: Even if you plan on only working out at home, there's no reason not to expand your exercise options by using dumbbells and a bench. Bodyweight only is more complex and restrictive. Most calisthenics movements are more complex compound movements and because the difficulty depends on your bodyweight, it's INCREDIBLY difficult to have a good beginner phase. Why? Because you should optimize your form, develop a good mind muscle connection, notice and rule out individual problems like muscle imbalances etc.. easily 8/10 calisthenics newbies are not focusing on the right things. In the gym it's EASY in comparison. Ask chatgpt for a simple beginner routine, stick to learning the main compound lifts, use little weight on every lift, focus on your form by watching videos and perform the movements slow & controled with a pause. This way the low weight is still challenging after a few reps and your form & mind muscle connection will develop in no time. The EXACT same thing applies to calisthenics, but it can't be self-taught as easily, simply because the movements are way more complex, free and leave room for a TON of mistakes.

When I was younger, calisthenics implied things like push-ups, lunges, pull-ups, one arm push-ups, jumping jacks, mountain climbers and stuff. It wasn’t until more recently that “calisthenics communities” became a thing and they started practicing gymnastic skills.

The script for this video is a little odd. In many of the points, the formula seems to be asserting something firm, and then immediately backpeddling. For example," You can't _____ . Well, you can, but it's hard." Why not just cut out the uncertainty and say, "It's difficult to _____ [due to the nature of calisthenics]." Minor gripe, but the second-guessing doesn't give the audience much credence in your knowledge.

After lifting weights for many years I turned to a mix of calisthenics and weight lifting (dumbbells and kettlebells only) and I'm really enjoying the results. As someone else mentioned I recover much quicker and I still put on enough muscle mass for effort to show. I'm not trying to look like a bodybuilder so for me its about losing weight, staying fit, and having enough muscle mass in the right places for an even and aesthetic look. I exercise from home with very limited equipment which saves lots of time and space. When I used to lift weights at the gym my free time was centered around making trips to the gym. That's no longer the case as I don't exercise in gyms. I couldn't be happier.

Having those bands along with a bit of creativity or access to KZbin gives you about 70% of the effectiveness as going to the gym and bands are super cheap. Yes calisthenics movements can be difficult. There are alternate movements and ways to build up. Same can be said for weightlifting. Most people starting out don't have the mobility to do a proper squat, deadlift, bench, etc. You should definitely start with calisthenics for a few reason. As the video said it is mainly compound exercises, you get more out of it full body wise. To include the mobility you will need for weightlifting. It does a better job at burning fat. It is more of a conditioning exercise than a strength building exercise and you should condition the body first to workout before thinking about building strenth. Yes you will also get stronger with calisthenics. Then, once you have developed strength and conditioning from calisthenics you can focus on hypertrophy and strength training with weightlifting. You could also progress to more difficult and explosive calisthenics/plyometrics. Depending on what your end goal is. Calisthenics should not be boring, a proper HIIT exercise routine with calisthenics is way more intense then just lifting. In my experience calisthenics will give you results faster due to the compound exercises and fat burning, which will help with wanting to continue exercising for a beginner. At some point you should incorporate weightlifting to some degree especially to develop the legs, fix imbalances, etc.

@jonathanjackson6874
@jonathanjackson6874 3 ай бұрын
It depends on the purpose of the workout. Time under tension is good and should be done. But for explosiveness, a plyo pull-up would work better. Launching yourself off the bar and being able to spin in a circle takes a lot of explosiveness. For instance if you want to jump higher and only do slow and steady squats you won't get anywhere. It just comes down to what is your goal. Fast reps have their benefits as well, as long as you maintain proper form. This is why calisthenics is not as limited as the video makes it seem. Speed and explosiveness play a role as well.

I started calisthenics from below level zero. I had literally just recovered from being paralyzed in both hands for a prolonged period. I just wanted to say that i approve this message! It can absolutely be done, but i did it and if i got a do-over i'd have gone to the gym and 'learned to walk' with a hybrid program before running face first into pure calisthenics. When you can do like 3-5 push-ups you can probably also do exactly 0 pull ups, 0 dips, 0 handstands and possibly also 0 inverted rows. That makes it really really hard to get going. And once you do get going, volume is going to be a serious problem for a while as you grind your way up through the 1-10 rep range. 😮

@@TENNSUMITSUMAThen you don't understand the square-cube law. Why is an ant so much stronger than a human pound for pound? Regardless of body fat, body mass rises at a faster rate than absolute strength. All else equal, someone who weighs 300lbs might be 50-75% stronger than a 150lbs guy, but for twice the weight.
@TENNSUMITSUMA
@TENNSUMITSUMA 2 ай бұрын
@@manmoth4 an ant is stronger than a human 'pound for pound' as you put it, because it has less mass for gravity to work on, and have smaller levers in their limbs! Hence the reason why shorter people generally have an easier time doing things like squats than taller people (especially if no 'enhancement' substances are used)! If you think two people that are equal weight, yet one is 95% muscle while the other is 40% muscle, isn't going to have completely different strength outputs then... 🤡‼ God forbid they're different heights! The moment I hear 'all else being equal' I know it's bull $h!+, no matter how 'scientific' it is! In nature (which is the only thing that matters), meaning not on some lab, all things are more or less *never* equal! Real life out in the natural world will always beat scientific, peer reviewed, journal entered whatever the f==k!

@@TENNSUMITSUMA If you still don't understand the square cube law that's fine, but it's a literal scientific law that's out there if you want to research it. As 3D objects grow in size, their surface area grows by radius squared, their volume by radius cubed. Your muscle strength is proportional to cross-sectional area, so doesn't increase as fast as your mass. This actually touches on something you said. You see, the force generated by the muscle should be proportional to it's cross-sectional area multiplied by length, since total contractile units should scale like this. But it's likely the length is cancelled out by the torque disadvantage of greater length. Anyway, point being, smaller animals having greater relative strength than larger ones is a universal trend. Elephants are strong, but could an elephant lift another elephant? Doubt it With regards "all else equal", you literally got the point backwards. When I say "300lbs Vs 150lbs, all else equal" I'm saying that they would each have the same body fat percentages, bone to muscle ratio, insertion points, etc. The point is that we're scaling the same person down to smaller size, we're eliminating the other variables to consider only the influence of overall size. This is the basis of the scientific method. You seem to even agree with me in a way? But your original comment was asking why calisthenics guys don't win strongman competitions. My point is that the strongest guys in absolute terms don't have great relative strength, because gaining the size needed for the best absolute strength causes your mass to rise faster than strength, due to the square-cube law, as explained. Hope that clarifies. Edit: ah, I get it. I agree with the top level comment, but I don't get why you disagree with the notion that a calisthenics athlete wouldn't be stronger per pound than a top level strongman

10:28 you CAN do isolations with calisthenics. it just makes less sense, since the main goal of calisthenics is compound movements. and technically, even when using free weights, they no such thing as "absolute" isolation. you'd always have some muscle group supporting you or keeping you stable while doing the main work on a few muscle groups.

As a guy who did close to 30 muscle ups at 80-85kg bodyweight, and a certified personal trainer with 15+ y xp.. promoting Trx is WORSE than promoting hard drugs and/or steroids. Good luck doing a flag if you are above 6 feet. Imagine 30 min video about Calisthenics, that doesn't mention vest almost at all (weighted vest). Beside saying that you split calisthenics the same way you split the routine the gym routine - almost all advice here is useless. Forgot to mention that cali is fun in groups/pairs, and easier to push yourself and others compared to the gym. Yeah i get plenty of vitamin D while working out outside at 1-4.. P.M.

Gym training with heavy weights builds muscles, but makes you slow and bulky. Calistenics routines are building muscle+cardio that make you a lean mean machine. Also training outside is so much better than inside. I have done both worlds for years. Calistenics wins easely. Calling it boring is strange to me, since you can use your creativity and make almost every exercise more challenging.

I'm no doctor or fitness nerd, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I find that doing pure calesthenics is not the way to go. I mix it up with wall climbing and parkour in order to supplement bits I might not be doing as intensely as I should in calesthenics cause I get bored. It's worked out great for me, I also run 6-10km before doing the exercises so my body is already pumping by the time I start. It also helps to mix it up a bit in the sense that when you're tired of the cardio doing push ups feels like resting even though it's not. In the end my idea is to do stuff that our bodies aree naturally programmed to improve at. If you go with the angle of getting healthy rather than buff you'll eventually be yoked AND healthy. When it comes to exercising and "getting results" it's always best to not think about it, otherwise it's like looking at the clock every 5 seconds when you're 15 min away from finishing your shift, makes it feel way longer than it needs to.

You’d be surprised with Calisrhenics. Once you learn how to fully balance while pushing or pulling from your centerline, you gain IMMENSE gym strength. Most guys who can full planche, end up dipping and benching, throwing on at least 2 plates under the belt or on the bar. Or a one arm pull up? Imagine the strength to not swing and pull up your own body weight (I’m 190 lbs for example) Best part, is that I don’t blow up and get saggy like the body builders. We stay super lean and muscular all around even pushing past 50 in older folks.
