Local Bay Area maker and avid angler Andrew Lawrence shows me how he assembles his own Kastmaster knockoff 'Master Kast' surf metal lures from cheap blanks and tie bucktails to any hook. Paint it, powder coat it, it's up to you - save money and have more satisfaction while you catch! This how-to vid covers surf spoons but can be scaled up or down for any size spoons, mickeys, metals, etc.

Made my own Rock fish Jigs some years back, used Cheap brooms or dusters for the yellow hair and regular yarn for bodies. Might be able to find an inexpensive substitute for buck hair as not all that cheap unfortunately..Also could add some metallic colored flashing into the threads if felt up to it ..sorta give it a bit more "bling".. Nice video as always.

I get mine from china in bulk for about a dollar each shipped. Dump the cheap rings and trebles. Airbrush or use lure flash tape. From years of experimenting with hooks on metals, have come to love the gamakatsu open eye (siwash) big river hook, line sides do not come off this hook once you hook em. I tie a few all white, all chartreuse, then most white with a chartreuse lateral line all with a pinch of crystal flash or flashabou for the bucktails. The white with chart does the best here in the bay. Same with hair-razers (bucktail jigs), much cheaper to make your own and very satisfying to get fish on something you made. As always, great vid Ish.

Gratitude! 🙏 -------- hi everyone, there seems to be some confusion with the title. if this vid covered building them from ingot or scrap, i would have titled it differently, maybe "make your own km from scratch metal". i don't think most people can smelt, mold, cut, grind, balance, and polish metals, so this is a simple diy anyone can follow to assemble a custom like-kastmaster from cheap blanks.

Hey guys I'm new to fishing never did it before I just bought my rod and reel combo and I have the same tackle as you but size 1/2 oz with a hook on it so my question is how do I know what kind of fish and how big fish I can catch on that?? there is no information about anything I was hoping for some info about what kind of fishing line to use with this and all that but on the back of that tackle no info. Yeah I know I probably sound stupid but yeah I have no idea about fishing lol.

Always! Some DIY (and easy to rig) weights would be nice considering how much lead I've donated to New Jag City off the rocks; I'm experimenting with nuts and bolts with mixed results. And even if it's impractical for the layperson, a video featuring any anglers 3D printing their own tackle would be pretty eye-opening.

Hey there,… Kastmaster has been around for quite some years now and proved to be quite an effective lure to say the least… and yes, everything today is horrifically expensive for no good reason … Anyways… been experimenting with different lengths and variations of the Kastmaster … they all work very well, long ones, short ones, in between one as well… a little bit of bling goes a long way on these lures …. To step up the game …. going to cut the out of stainless steel rods …. just for personal use … stainless is not cheap by any means but It won’t rust because everything will be stainless… and instead of treble hooks … single stainless hooks that resembles a big nasty salmon fly….
@CC_Marauder
@CC_Marauder 4 жыл бұрын
These are zinc blanks NOT stainless steel like real Kastmasters. How would you explain the longevity difference between the different metal types in your experience? Is it worth it to buy cheap up front only to wish you spent a little more on SS to begin with?
@rkw221
@rkw221 2 жыл бұрын
kinda my thoughts as well. Not only the type of metal but also it's density. As well as balance in the body blank. I've fishes KM's since the 70s and also cringe at their cost even back then. However, after trying dozens of knock-off I always went back to the real deal. I am totally for saving but often we are stepping over dollars (in this case fish) to pick up pennies. Balance is also a big thing in a DIY knockoff as this affects motion and fishability. Love the idea just suggest treading lightly to see if your builds need refined to actually catch fish...

How much fish can u catch before the buck tail starts to break away
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 6 жыл бұрын
After using the featured bucktail for about 10 surf hours, the hairs and thread are holding up great, but are being stained by the rusting treble. My advice: if you're fishing salt, use a saltwater rated treble, like a VMC O Shaughnessy.

What size single hook do you recommend for the 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 oz. sizes? Has anyone tried putting on a weedless hook?
@CC_Marauder
@CC_Marauder 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Very few, if any YT sites give tips on the proper size treble hook to use on a Kastmaster or Master Kast based on ounce size of the blank. Kind of important tie together info to the normal inquiring mind.
@k9er233
@k9er233 6 ай бұрын
For Trout and similar size using trebles, I have seen it suggested to use: #10 for 1/8 oz - #8 for 1/4 oz - #6 for 3/8 oz - #4 for 1/2 oz. For Salmon, Steelhead, Stripers, Black Bass etc. #2 for 3/4 oz - #1 for 1 oz - #1/0 for 1.5 oz - #2/0 for 2 oz - #3/0 for 3 oz. Personally, when I fish them using trebles, I generally go up 1 hook size above these recommendations for a better hookup. Often for Steelhead, Salmon, all Basses, saltwater species... I use a single Siwash or other large single trailer hook with the shortest shank that I can find. I always dress my hooks, treble or single with bucktail, craft fur, flashabou, crystal flash, feathers or combinations thereof. The dressing on the hooks adds extra kick in the water like a swimming fish's tail. If you think you are getting short strikers, trim the dressing to just past the hook bend, but I have found that most strikes are aggressive enough that it is usually not necessary to trim. If I could only have 1 lure for all of my fishing, it would be a Kastmaster. I have been consistently successful using them for almost anything that swims for over 61 years now, so you could say that I am solidly 'hooked' on them. 😁 Hope this helps and Good luck.🎣@@CC_Marauder

hi, check out www.reelpowerhandles.com, the guy that runs that site sent me his master kast blanks, they're very good quality, action is similar if not exactly like an acme kastmaster (full links in vid description too). his blanks are made of zinc and plated, pretty durable in the surf in my month of testing. i'd replace the rings though. surf sizes are priced avg qty 10 for $29 which is like 50-60% less than oem acme versions. he's got a TON of other great gear and upgrades on his site, if you use promo code ishwithfish, you'll get free US shipping on ANY order. he's helping me help you guys out!

Hello Ish with Fish... greetings form Peru... I like to do my own lures and when I saw your vid I thought that you will show how to do the KASTMASTER metal spoons... After some minutes watching your vid, I figured out that you use blank metals. Where did you bought them? Some years ago I did my own Kastmasters metals, using a circle section steel rod and cutting it with two different angles... It was very hard to made the cuts but at the end and after some effort, I got my homemade version of a Kastmaster.

hi, thx for watching! these blanks are called 'Master Kast' and are almost identical to shape and weight of the real Acme Kastmasters. I put a associate Amazon links in the description so you can easily order everything shown. You can find them on eBay too. Yes, you can certainly build your own spoons from scratch, but it's very difficult to cut and polish metals for the average angler, at least to match the grade of Kastmasters. These blanks are much more convenient.

Please let me give you a recommendation. Instead using a treble hook at the end of your lure, try using an assit hook like the ones I set in my Attila Slim (can watch my video)... having that setup, your odds for catching will be better than using a treble hook. I have changed almost all treble hooks of my Spoons or Jigs with assist hooks. Try it at least with one of your jigs, and tell me how it went....

You can also use a straight, 4-5" white worm on a single hook. The action is unreal. It has to be a straight, thin round worm and not a curl tail worm. This is an old trick from dudes that used to fish at the old Evans St PG&E in San Francisco.

@marvicty
@marvicty 7 жыл бұрын
@Ish With Fish, I would probably go with a 2/0 Siwash hook on a 2 oz Kastmaster (Mastercast?). If it's 1 oz and below, definitely drop down in hook size. I found that if I was fishing the Bay, I never needed more than 1/2 - 3/4 oz.

"Changing hooks on lures" you mean? And no, making one dose not require melting and smelting metal... but taking round stock and cutting at two angle, sanding, and drilling two holes is quite feasible for most.
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 6 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Tooley "buying blanks, adding hooks, tying teasers" i mean. targeted audience are people who are unaware it's easy to assemble your own🖒 and no, i don't think you can simply cut one from round stock. blanks are oval with disproportionate bevels - i think oem are cast molded, ported, chromed and polished. i don't think the average angler can make one at home.
