FYI - I have successfully looped a radio controlled autogyro. The model is a Durafly Auto G-2. It is a tractor motored model, with probably a better thrust to weight ratio than most full scale units. Just like on your simulator, as long as you keep positive G's on the rotor throughout the maneuver, it works, but you will always lose altitude from where you started the loop.

A loop in a Gyro can be done, here is link to a video of Jim Vanek flying his Sport Copter at the Hillsboro airshow. The loop is right around the 3 minute mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5bddndohNmFlaM

Which flight simulator were you flying this gyrocopter in? Looks like fun, i have X Plane 11 and MS Flightsim 2020 but havent even looked to see if fs 2020 has a gyrocopter, xp just might. Flying the real thing looks like a great exoerience and i watch a few youtube channels of people that fly them. The 1 thing that is scariest to me was learning that a pushover into a negative G or unloading the rotor can kill you and ive watched some examples of it happening. Thanks for the video!

Mike, what simulator software are you using in this video?
@MikeSmith6283 жыл бұрын
X-Plane 9 - which is an old version -- Version 11 is the current version but my sim profile for the ELA Gyro does not like it very well, thus I have not upgraded.
@cameronlapworth22845 жыл бұрын
Gyro s have been looped both the early ones an about 15 years ago in a cartercopter I believe. Madness though. Actually.getting to the speeds you were before the loop was almost as dangerous as your disk is very shallow and it's easy to dip the disk below the airflow. Also the Sim tipping the gyro with gusts is not realistic either. In reality the teeter hinge will compensate it won't bank due to turbulence. It will yaw not bank.

If you attempted a loop in a gyroplane the the rotors would fail it was tried some years ago and the pilot is dead.

Mike Smith - Nice video but... OUCH probably the worst most unrealistic flight modeling of a gyroplane. LOL, and Austin Meyers swears by the accuracy of his flight models in X-Plane. In this case what a freakin' joke! In reality, cut the power and a gyro won't stall, which is simply not possibly, instead it begins an immediate descent as the decelerating wind-driven rotor blades begin to lose lift. An immediate nose over is required to maintain rotor blade rpms. In my beloved old Bensen B8M the best autorotate speed was 45mph and the glide angle a steep 45 degrees minimum, so there's no looking around for a great place to land unless you've got plenty of altitude. Ask me how I know this. As you know Mike, the golden rule of gyrocopter flying is to ALWAYS keep the rotors loaded with positive g's. And that's exactly why a gyro can't loop or roll. And other than military helicopters, most civilian helicopters today still can't roll or loop since, like a gyrocopter, their flexible rotor blades tend to fold up under negative g's. Then it's GAME OVER! Cheers from Thailand buddy!

@MikeSmith6286 жыл бұрын
xPlane 9.5 running on a Mac. The sim file is for a ELA-07 Gyroplane.
@raouldemer23004 жыл бұрын
The flight characteristics of this gyro are completely unrealistic. Just try to switch off the engine and you will understand. End of the simulation.
@MikeSmith6284 жыл бұрын
Raoul Demer - I agree this SIM does several things a real Gyroplane would be incapable of doing. One of the others is I flew to 35,000 AGL one night. No way in a real Gyroplane of this model. You can however shut the engine off in a real Gyro and land quite safely.

Where can I get this similator Mike?
@MikeSmith6285 жыл бұрын
The simulator is an older version of xPlane (9.51) and the current version is xPlane 11. The problem will be that the sim file itself (for the ELA-07 Gyro) is third party shareware. I did try to run it under xPlane 10 without much success. You can try to find a Gyro sim at xPlane.org that will run under xPlane 11. As a side note - flying a Gyro in a simulator of this type is not really realistic or good for real life Gyro training if that is what you are looking for. The only thing this piticular setup would be good for in real life is instrument rating training. xPlane is an excellent simulator but is just that simulator game. if you are interested in real life flying - then go get a discovery flight in a real gyro and see if it is for you. Warning - may be habit forming.

Nope - just having fun with a simulator - which points out the bad part of simulators - they let you do things that are not realistic. They are good for instrument training only - but actually let you develop BAD habits when it comes the real feel of flying a real Gyro.

Sorry, but found the heavy breathing, grunting, snorting and groaning very off-putting.
Maybe it is a good idea to do a loop with the prerotator turned ON?
@MikeSmith6285 жыл бұрын
No, No, NO! The pre-rotor mechanism is exactly what the name impies. They are light weight power cables and/or a systems of shafts and u-joints ( or in some cases small electric or hydraulic motors) designed to spins up the rotor to speeds much less than the speed that the rotor is at flying speeds. Engaging the pre-rotar at flying speeds would most likely have catastrophic results when the rotor is spinning at 300 plus RPM. Any number of components could FAIL and break apart sending metal parts through the prop or possibly damage the rotor head itself and cause fatal results - NEVER DO THIS THIS - PLEASE ! THIS VIDEO IS WITH A FLIGHT SIMULATOR "G A M E" --- IN A REAL GYRO YOU WILL DIE IF YOU ATTEMPT ANY OF THE THINGS I DID IN THIS VIDEO SIMULATION.
@ramjet40252 жыл бұрын
@@MikeSmith628 Why not just add a Rocket assist to keep the speed up thru the loop? Its really scary watching idiots loop a real gyro as part of a marketing plan to sell their gyro, when their production line has been a figment of imagination for years and a string of deposits paid and no gyro delivered.
@jobischops63066 жыл бұрын
No engine no rotor ?? Who told you that ???
@MikeSmith6286 жыл бұрын
Jo Bischops - not sure I understand your question. On a gyro the rotor is not powered by the engine except during pre-rotation. The ELA-07 simulated gyro in this video uses a pneumatic system to engage the pre-rotator and only engages when the cyclic is held full forward to to protect the drive linkage. Once you pull the cyclic back the pre-rotator will disengage. This is different that a Magni or AutoGyro model where you bring the cyclic back to a neutral position around 130 RPM and continue to hold the pre-rotator as you Taxi into takeoff position and continue to pre-rotate until you achieve 200-220 RPM and release and apply takeoff power to the engine.

@ronandress59485 жыл бұрын
Autogyro has a micro switch that requires you to keep the stick full forward in order for the prerotator to function and during training they stress not to bring the stick back until you reach the 200 rpm mark. 625 hours in the last 2 years in my Autogyro Cavalon and loving every minute of it.
