We put this matchup into our head-to-head pool because they're both barrel proof single barrels from Jack Daniel's, but Coy Hill was a 2021 Special Release that garnered a LOT of praise and some incredibly high prices to boot (despite having a $70 suggested retail price). Coy Hill was also very difficult to find. While some Coy Hill bottles are considered "hazmat" being 140.0 proof or higher, we wanted to compare a slightly lower proof Coy Hill to see if it really did stand head-and-shoulders above the standard Jack Daniel's Barrel Proof offering.

Just tried my JDSBBF (60.00) (127 proof) today and loved it! I also picked up a small bottle of JDSBBP (30.00)(131 proof)!! Coy Hill were I’m at is $499.99 & $599.99(no way)!!

I agree that Tennessee whiskey is a variety of bourbon. Not all Tennessee whiskey uses the Lincoln County process, and some bourbon does. In practical reality charcoal mellowing is just another way of making a distinctive bourbon, like using wheat instead of rye, or finishing in a heavily toasted and lightly charred barrel. 🙂

Fun video! I'm abig SBBP fan and luckily they are readily available. Granted I live in middle Tennessee not far from Lynchburg, but even so I've not seen a bottle of Coy Hill on any shelf anywhere between Brentwood and Tullahoma.

I have three Jack Daniel’s bottles: the SBBP, the Bonded and the Triple Mash. I could never get the banana note in the nose for any of them, not even the Bonded which is supposed to be all banana. One day I poured some Bonded in a glass, I smelled it( no banana, again) and I left it sitting for about 20 minutes. When I got back to it, the banana note was so strong, I couldn’t smell anything else. And it was in the palate as well, just as strong. You guys said that Erin never gets the banana notes, maybe she should try letting the pour sit for a while.

I bought the jd barrel proof on clearance for $31.99. Something told me don't pass this up. Wow! This is my first barrel proof. This is awesome. What a great sipper. Obviously at this proof it's not a daily drinker. But once a week or so great. It's sitting on a shelf above my computer. It's like it talks to me. Easily one of the best bottles I own.

I'm usually good up to around 120 proof but I kept hear how good JDSBBP is so I tried a 375ml at 130.8 and was amazed it didn't drink nearly that hot, I've got some in the 'teens' that drink hotter

I wish I was a fan of Jack, I see the single barrel proof all over the place in NW Indiana but no Coy Hill. I just can’t get over the banana note, maybe I’ll give it another shot. I have yet to try the barrel proof. Cheers

The banana note is still there but barrel proof does bring a lot of other flavors to the equation as well.

Remember too that the SBBP's are as they say single barrels. So some may have a stronger banana note than others. And some may not have it at all. Just luck of the draw. Not surprised you never saw a Coy Hill, they were a ghost when they released. They basically don't exist now at all except for secondary prices.

I love me some JD! The 2020 SiBBP rye is my absolute favorite so far. I've had a few of the regular SiBBP, but not the Coy Hill. I have a bottle of the Twice Barreled Single Malt that I love. Retail on JD special releases and barrel proofs are bargains in the whiskey world! Cheers!

My main problem with coy hill was that it was basically just a really hot version of the jack bp store pick i had next to it. So my reaction was similar to erins. After trying it i was less sad i missed it. I still have some of the special edition rye, which i think is the superior whiskey.

Coys can vary pretty wildly. Some are just hotter JDSBBPs and some are some of the best whiskey we’ve ever tried. The range is wild.

Not sure on the barrel number but it’s pictured in the b-roll if you can make it out. It’s a standard non-store pick 131.0 proofer we bought in Nashville.

Now keep in mind. IF that’s the Coy Hill Small batch it came in a 375ml bottle and not a 750ml. So that $70 price tag is for half the size. The Coy Hill single barrel from two year ago came in a 750ml

There’s isn’t a whiskey on planet earth worth $500 in our eyes though, so suffice it to say it would’ve been two thumbs down at that price.

Am I the only one that has ever gotten a “bad” bottle of JDSBBP? I had a local store pick and the nose was incredible but on the pallet it tasted like banana flavored chemicals and asphalt with a hint of maple syrup. Haven’t wanted to spend the money on another. Did I just get a bad barrel pick?

Could be that particular bottle, that particular pick, or the way your palate reads JDSBBP. It would be difficult to say without trying at least one or two more different Jack single barrels, but those flavors aren’t what most get (us included) so it sounds like it may be that particular bottle or pick being “off.”

The 375s are the “small batch” versions with many being 145-155ish proof. The 750s are the single barrels that range from 137-144ish proof.

When you say double blind, what does that mean to you? In science that means neither the subjects nor the scientist knows who is getting which intervention.

In the context of blind tastings, it means we have no idea what is in either glass and we could be sipping anything (compared to a single blind head-to-head where we'd know what pours were in the blind tasting but not know which pour was in each glass).
