Finally, a video of something I can find in my backyard! Well, almost. In Tasmania we get plenty of Jack-Jumpers (Myrmecia pilosula) which seem to be the more bouncy, aggressive sort, but their stings don't hurt quite as bad or for as long, the itch afterward is more annoying than the sting. Though there have been reported deaths to this ant, I believe they were all cases of anaphylactic shock. But we also get Bulldog ants, also called Bull ants or Inchmen (Myrmecia esuriens). From some quick googling, it looks like the Myrmecia brevinoda that you got stung by are generally a fair bit larger than the ones we get here though, the [esuriens] queens being at largest 0.94 inches (still a big bloody ant!) compared to the brevinoda queen's massive 1.6 inches. When I was a kid my mate managed to get stung on the buttock by one, and it swole up to almost twice its regular size. I also remember as an even younger child, my younger sister unknowingly sat on a nest of them and received 7 or 8 bites by memory. I remember by her scream alone, and the way she ran, I thought she had been bitten by a snake for sure.

I live in Perth (where this video was shot) and while in the urban areas we never see them, I've seen a few when I was camping. It always astounded me how fast they move for their size, a good half a meter a second I'd say. The ones I saw never jumped and I'm pretty sure only a select few can but you can easily tell how super soldier esque they are compared to typical ants regardless. They usually hunt alone too, basically the epitome of quality over quantity

I'll never forget accidentally digging up one of those nests as a kid, those ants are quick and jump and will get you in ways you don't expect. 30 years later I still haven't matched that pain. The family of ant the Myrmecia is a throwback from early ant evolution before pheromone based teamwork evolved. Primitive ants often had to hunt without teamwork and hence the strong mandibles and strong simple (formic acid) sting.

Fantastic video, Bull Ants are quite the amazing power houses of the ant kingdom. Also as someone who is an antkeeper in Aus I just wanted to clarify that this was a colony of Myrmecia Gratiosa (judging by size/colors), video identified these as Myrmecia Brevinoda which are larger and a dark maroon color. Nonetheless worthy specimens for a sting test 😂

Can i ask you two questions?: what is the most venomous type of bull ant? And what is the biggest type of bull ant? Thanks
@jordanverhoeven3156 Жыл бұрын
@@akrilla5929 No worries, mostly easy questions to answer. So for the Guineas Book of world records Myrmecia Pyriformis is considered the most dangerous ant in the world. Thus it would be safe to assume its the most venomous of Australia's Myrmecia, however a close second would probably be Myrmecia Pilosula (Jack Jumper) as it stings people more frequently and causes anaphylaxis in people yearly. As for largest bull ant, that easily goes to Myrmecia Brevinoda, however since bull ants can be monomorphic it means they can vary in sizes. So the largest Pyriformis queen can be larger than the smallest Brevinoda queen, but the largest Brev will be much larger than the largest Pyriformis queen.

I didn’t realise there was a bull ant nest nearby, and by the time I got back to the car I had them all over my little body stinging me. I think test like these should be conducted with a specimen that hasn't been held by the forceps stinging it the whole time, that could drastically reduce the "true sting" because it's already released a lot of its venom on the forceps before stinging for real so you may not get a true idea of a full dose sting. it'd be like getting stung by one that just stung 6 people first, I believe Smit did a similar process of agitating the specimen as little as possible first so he could get a true index on the full scale and effects of each sting. that being said I love the channel and I'm glad you are keeping it up! you've become a great host also

I was stung by about 5 of these at the same time on my leg a few years ago. It really did feel like my leg was on fire and I had to hold a hose on it for several minutes to soothe the intense burning sensation. The good thing is that the intense pain does subside after a few minutes, but a light pain and itching does hang around for a couple of days.

Seen a new video, expected to see Coyote but forgot he retired..☹️. Channel ain't the same without him but still has the information and entertainment that I enjoy.
