This is the BEST explanation on a smooth landing. "Airspeed, numbers, when number disappear below you, pull power to idle (keep a little power) transition to slow flight, maintain altitude , keep nose pull up until cowling touch the end of the runway!" - Well THAT IS YOUR MONEY FOR a Pilot - Perfect Landings!!!!

I was so lost in landing recently even though my log book says I did more than 500 landings. So I have been trying to find the tips and tricks for smooth landing in youtube. Most of them tell me perfect traffic pattern, airspeed, and so on. I know these things are very important but my landings were somewhat wrong. But oh, man…this is the best tips. I will use your tips on every landing. Thank you!!!!! (I hope I will pass checkride next week…)

I always put so much pressure on myself to make a good landing. After watching this instructional video it gave me a completely different goal for my next landing. No more pressure, just go around and try it again. Wouldn’t it be nice if life had go arounds too…The only thing that messes up a good go around, is a better landing… you are a good instructor. Your approach to making it basic first, then let’s build from there is spot on. Very grateful

Nicely done, all too often pilots do not practice go arounds. Preparing for a go around is a key component.

This is the BEST explanation for treat all landings as a go-around! I do catch myself flying too fast on landing if I am too high above the glide slope, and then forcing the plane to land! This causes the plane to rise again instead of descending, and then I have this hard landing I'm going to get more into slow flight with every type of aircraft in the flight sim but here you don't have a good feeling about how high you are above the runway! What about the flaps to do a go-around?
@AeroNerd
@AeroNerd 2 ай бұрын
I would practice slow flight really low over the runway in your Skyhawk… don’t land, but try to fly as low as you can for about the first 3rd of the runway just so you can get that “sight picture”. This is what really helped my students get those smoooooth landings! After the first 3rd of the runway, go around. As soon as you have a positive rate, slowly raise one flap at a time and keep that positive rate going whether if you are flying Vx or Vy. Or as directed my the manufacturer. Thanks for the comment! More content once per week!

When I was learning how to fly, my circumstances caused me to have a private CFI. He had his own Skyhawk XP. He was always worried about making it to the field and having enough altitude. Me not knowing anything about flying. He taught me how to land using what’s called the Sarajevo approach, or combat approach. It took me a long time to figure out how to land an airplane because it was so scary. But once I mastered it, it saved my butt more than once. He also had me fly under the hood quite a bit and that also save me seeing how I would fly back-and-forth to the Bahamas in the morning over glassy water. We did a lot of stall recoveries. which I highly recommend. Flying at night was one of my favorite things to do. This was in 1970.

It must be nice to adjust the seats. Most the Cessnas I train in have broken seats. Last time I could barely even see the end of the props 🤣

Wow, that can be a safety concern if the seats are broken in aircraft. Especially the pilot seat. There have been cases where planes had crashed due to broken seats! Please be careful!!

I have always felt that a little power during the transition or flare was beneficial but my instructor would always say full idle. Thanks for the info!
@MoonRock-ij8ni
@MoonRock-ij8ni 2 жыл бұрын
soft field technique says add power. when practicing, making it smooth without power is important for both short field and power off 180 and typically harder to learn. A lot of the problems with hard landings comes from transitioning to slow flight too early, pitching too high and not aligning with the runway. In single engine planes full idle from abeam the touchdown point in the pattern is safer incase you have an engine failure on base or final, you'll have enough energy to touch down safely and you have extra power if you need to adjust for normal landings.

Great explanation,thanks. I did my first solo flight last week, there was a hook barrier at the beginning of RW22 (LTBU) and a crosswind 7knots which is above limits of first solo. I guess I strarted to flare a bit early and just try to keep flying 10 feets above the runway to shorten the taxi time before reaching exit point (3km long RW) After reaching the middle of the runway I pull the throttle idle and pull the stick back and wait for touch down. Diamond DA 20 C1 bumped once and I did not wait for second! And full throtlle to go around. Iuckly managed to land on my second attemp safely and smoothly. Early flare is second important issue as I understand.

Hello Ty! First, of all, I am not a pilot nor taking any classes right now but a friend of mine in the Philippines is already a licensed Private Pilot and currently working to get his commercial license. Needless to say, he got me to become interested in becoming a private pilot myself hahaha. So now I found myself watching videos NOT necessarily to learn (can't really just learn by watching videos) but to get some idea of what I need to learn. I must say, this is the first time I came across your video and I like the way how you explain things, and you made a lot of sense.... so thank you for sharing your knowledge, am sure a lot of pilots are gonna benefits from your videos.

You are very good at explaining the aviation processes. I am sure we all agree that your explanation is very on-point and excludes most of the nonsense. Exclusive nonsense is essential since it creates unnessesery clutter in the learning curve! Thank you for all your time and for saving time for others! I've learned a LOT by watching your instructions.

Nice video, many thanks. I have a PPL and after getting my licence, due to covid and other personal reasons, I was not able to fly for almost 4 years. A couple of months before I did visit my school and found it too difficult to land and even after 10 hrs I was not ready for Solo. After watching your video, I realised that one of the reasons for my inconsistent flare was perhaps due to the lower seat height. I now remember that during my PPL training, I used to sit on cushions to allow me a good view of the cowling as you have demonstrated in your video. Another issue I faced this time was the great amount of pressure I felt on my hands while flaring. I remember that, during my PPL training, I used just three of my left fingers to flare gently and every time, atleast 20 solo, I did good smooth landing. But during this visit I had no idea how to get rid of the pressure while maintaining Airspeed and Aiming point using Trim and Power adjustments respectively or rather I would say , I cannot recollect what I was doing right with the controls to give me a smooth yoke, which could be manipulated with just 3 fingers effortlessly, during my PPL training whichever C172R Aircraft I flew. Very much appreciate if you could throw some light on this, how to get rid of the pressure, so that I could do better landing next time around.

This was helpful. I'm in the middle of a pinch hitter course with no previous flight experience or study (other than helping my husband study for his PPL). So I'm learning to fly and land from the right seat. My biggest issue right now is learning when to transition from flying just above the runway to flaring. Thanks for these tips.

That's the Best explanation to me . I adopted recently that bad habit, of thinking about Landing, all the time. As consequence i was told of by the instructors, cause i was trying to fix a 'slight' bounce, not knowing how terrible it could be! Just, many thanks for the advice, of course every approach is a GO Around, and it has to be priority number 1. Thankyou very much Sir, I will try to work on that 😊🙏🙏🙏

You are correct!...I've been a licensed pilot for +38yrs. I watch these channels to reinforce things I know, learn some interesting new ways to do things I've done a certain way for years and on some occasions break bad habits. I might add that absolutely nothing beats quality stick time. Being somewhat tall I've never had seat height issues. With that being said somewhere along the way I learned how to judge ground height by the front quarter of the windshield during transition.

Great Video!!...I stopped at 06:50 and a lightbulb popped on. 💡... I thought ... he's talking about Aircraft Carrier Landings!!! If you watch any cockpit video of carrier landings..They are doing Touch and Gos...... They nevet stop FLYING THE AIRCRAFT... if they miss "the trap"...they are already in afterburner mode... I have tried it with simple Home pc flight simulators..and you will succeed most of the time if you think and do a "Touch and Go" in the landing profile!!! Most people look at Carrier Landing and think "THOSE GUYS ARE NUTS"...not really... Thank you for your tutaledge and expertise!!! I am a new viewer and I will be watching from now on..and do some back viewing on your older stuff!!! Thank you Sir!!! ..🐦.. 👀

I'm a Pilot in training and have 8 hrs. I have a great CFi and wouldn't change anything she's great. She makes me feel comfortable and never gets stern. And first and foremost I believe that's the most important thing is to learning to fly, have a good CFI. I'm loving flying that much I want to fly every chance I get. At the moment I do 2 hrs a week I wanted to do 2 hr flights but she said it's better to just do 1 hr flights as not to practise to many things in that lesson. As it is getting more difficult to remember everything in the lesson. Believe me if you haven't done it yet at least go for the first lesson. it's worth it Certainly helps not to leave it to long between lessons also, I did wait until I had put enough money aside to make sure I didn't have to stop half way through. Blues sky's and safe flying everyone. From Australia 🇦🇺 ♥

I've been a Pilot for just over 4mth months now. it's the best feeling ever to be in control of the plane. I often practice landings when ever I can as every landing is different and I've gone around a few times. I know it's hard for some people they think they just have to land and not look bad in front of people because most times there is always someone watching you land. I've gone around twice not knowing that 2 CFI,s were watching both times ,1 for a gust of wind and the other just didn't feel right and both have said better to make the decision to go around rather than be remembered as the bloke that stuffed up a landing and damaged the plane and I know of 4 bad landings that will be remembered because of damage to the Aircraft, plus the mental damage to the person flying and that takes a lot longer to get over rather than thinking it's not going to look good for not landing. Safe flying everyone from Australia 🇦🇺

Thanks for this! I'm doing my training right now, and I've been struggling a bit with my flare and hold-off technique , so I'll try that "trick" by placing the nose/cowling at the end of the runway. The runway is short here, and of grass instead of being paved, so we use a steeper approach (approx 5 degrees) coming in to land, and thus we flare and retard the throttle to idle once we pass the numbers, but as far as the flaring technique that you described, it should still apply. Thanks!

In fact my landings at night are better. Since my peripheral view has been detoriated due to my oldness I concentrate on the speed the runway get wider. At night the side lights give me a good estimation of my altitude. Thus I can even make smooth landing without landing lights.

Initially I found this hard. Recently I've been smoking my landings and should be soloing in the next couple of weeks God willing. Does anyone else do landings like this?

For initial training I can see your instructor’s logic. However keep in mind if you were to pursue heavier jets such as corporate or airline, I would train to land on the 1000 footers instead of the numbers. There’s a study from FOQA about why jets land short the runway because everyone is trained to land on the numbers. I’ll make a new video about this soon. You will eventually get your own style of smooth landings. There lots of ways to land. You’ll get there! 😁

Keep in mind that there is more than one way to approach the landing process. When I was a teenager back in the mid 1960’s, I got my introduction to flight training in a Globe Swift from my father - a military trained WWII P-40 and P-47 fighter pilot, and later a flight instructor for the Army. He taught landings much differently than how they are taught today. My father treated every landing as a precision, power-off, flight maneuver. He would allow me to add power ONLY if I misjudged the glide so badly that I could not reach the runway. The use of power was, by his method, a sign of poor technique. I recognize that flight instruction has changed over the past 60 years, but there is still merit in manner that flying was taught back in the golden age of aviation. To this day I still land using tight patterns and no power except when necessary.
