Nonono, come on, the sphere studio can't be that small. To cast correct shadows the sun simulator clearly has to be several miles away at least, so this is at least a 10 mile diameter studio. At least a mile high. So at least 80 square miles of LCD screens on the ceiling. 😀

Let's say $60 per tv (huge discount), total cost of tv's alone would be $ 24.7 *billion.* A typical 40" tv would use 50watt. 412million x 50W = 20.6 GW The nuclear powerplant in Arizona produces 4GW. So we need 5 plants. Construction costs in 1986 for 1 plant $5.9 billion. 5 plants would have cost $29.5. I know Will Duffy is very generous, but I doubt he would pay $45 *billion,* just to fool some flerfs for 4 days.

I've been thinking how cool it would be if people at the various Antarctic stations were to find out about TFE, perhaps through the upcoming documentary. Then next December we could find a volunteer at each station to do a 24+ hour timelapse, all coordinated. This would show that this same type of observation occurs all over Antarctica. Of course there are already livestreaming webcams at several of the stations. So it's already being done. But as a coordinated set of observations that would be fun.

Here’s my understanding of what the thinking was. At 0:14, that long line of footprints in the snow tells you how far Will had to walk out to what looks like the north-west of the main camp to set up this Insta360 camera. Someone worked out the position very well. If he'd done it in the main camp, the sun would've been in danger of being obscured by the mountain around local solar midnight (which is not the same as midnight, Chilean time). The obvious place to set up would be just north of the main camp, but that’s where the ski-plane airstrip is, so that whole area was out of bounds and out of consideration. Halfway Point was chosen because it would provide plenty of clearance for the sun above the mountain top. Halfway Point was already set up and equipped with toilets and power because it was used as a water station for the ice marathon runners. It's called Halfway Point because its half way around the 10,000-meter loop of track which had been cleared of loose snow and compacted by the Sno-Cats. The other main reason for basing the photography at Halfway Point was out of consideration for the other guests and the staff, who have to sleep in the tents at the main camp. It's hard enough to sleep in 24-hour light without people wandering around outside your tent, talking about cameras and elevation angles all "night". I guess there was also far less chance of a curious guest or staff member wandering up to the cameras and disturbing them if they were well away from the main camp.

I especially like how the local sun circles around in FRONT of Mt Rossman, possibly the most based name for a mountain ever. That was extra cool, because it does it twice. Once at the start, again at the end. The cloud-morphing artwork was pretty slick too. In genuine time-lapse they'd be far more "jumpy". But glertfurds will glerfturd, all day every day.

When part of the sun passes behind the mountain, the mountain does not cover it. As if the sun passed in front of the mountain. The shadow that the mountain produces should be very long. Do you have a geometrically consistent model, that matches observation (i.e. the Sun circling around an observer in Antarctica in december), that’s not the rotating globe model?
