My father served at Gorton in the Loco running Department before he became a Premium apprentice, as such he worked on these locos and his time on the footplate included runs such as, the LMR took them off the Manchester Liverpool trains and substituted Compounds but they had to be removed pronto, father said going fast across Throstle Nest Junction was exciting but they were tough, any GCR loco was tough and lasted well whilst others such as the B17 simply fell apart, the secret was a good ratio between fire grate and boiler heating surface, a 26 sq ft firebox grate was good but too small for the big 4-6-0's like Sir Sam Fay class which is why they were never as good. Also there were the D10's or 11E in GCR terminology so that deserves a mention, Butler Henderson was fathers favourite and I wanted one of those but had to settle for Mons but then as you would expect a Butler Henderson came my way so I have both - last comment as father said - her saw thousands of locos but NEVER one that had a cream cab interior.

Hi Sam, well done you for looking at a loco you have had for a couple of years and now you have a great eye for reviewing. I think it’s a wonderful loco and deserved a re - review. Some of the features are good and it’s not expensive as other recent ones, but still a lot of money. I remember buying a steam loco about 12 years ago and it was £107 , that was classed as a super fine model, and others were priced at around £85 - £90 , which was affordable about 3 times a year, now it’s not justifiable at £185 ( two weeks shopping, or 1 month electric, gas and water bill ). My apologies for not being super rich, as a council employee, my wages are not very good, low pay and no above average wage increase, puts an enjoyable hobby out of reach , will have to rely on 4th hand locomotives. But they are still expensive as everyone thinks it’s worth more than it really is. Even rolling stock and wagons are getting to the price that a locomotive was a few years ago. £60 a wagon, £74 a carriage. I have to vote with an empty wallet. Oh well, at least I can build houses etc from card kits. Downloadable kits got good results and multiple for a small price, ink, paper and glue. Yippee.

Welcome to the life of public officers gentleman... I'm a secretary for a french state administration, and certainly not better paid than you are. What makes me rant is that UK models tends to have the price of german ones, but not the quality... I have seen too much issues with UK engines from the year I started UK OO, 2019, and I would certainly not buy anything from the UK now due to those issues. I'm too deep in UK trains to go back now, and it is a fascinating world for me, but for someone new to the hobby on the continental side, I would not recommend go UK now.

I managed a ride in 1992 on Butler Henderson's last weekend at Loughborough. It had been repainted BR Black with lining one side and plain black the other! Unfortunately it was leaking a lot of water from the firebox area and just about managed the round trip. Delighted that Sam has finally found a Bachmann loco he likes. Another balanced review, keep it up Sam.

A beautifully decorated loco with fine detailing and accessory pack included. The weight is impressive with the diecast chassis and having the opening smoke box door is a nice touch, though the upper handrail above could have been curved better than it is on your model. Maybe it is a one off, but it takes away from the look of the nice front-end esthetics. A great model by Bachmann and I've the BR Black Lined #62690 The Lady of the Lake in my own collection.

That’s a great loco Sam. Several fittings and paint details seem to be a tad concerning but surely a close-up can be cruel at times. The crawl isn’t bad at all actually for a 3 pole. She seems to be able to creep along without stalling at least. Apart from the Caledonian 812 all other loco reviews so far this year have been very concerning to say the least. Except for the 812 and this one they are all considered fails in our book caused by sheer unacceptable issues. Hopefully this one new from a box will be as good as yours. She’s stunning to look at Sam and at least runs well.

GCR D11's were named after WW1 related battles and some personalities and royalty. Butler-Henderson (currently in the national collection) was a director of the GCR and was a relative of Vicki Butler-Henderson the motor sport presenter. LNER versions were often called after characters from Sir Walter Scott's 'Waverley' novels characters, hence names like Luckie Mucklebackit, Eddie Ochlitree, Laird of Balmawhapple, Baillie Macwheeble and more! Keep up the good work

Great review - loved seeing the D11 again. I find it fascinating that the ratings are pretty much identical to last time! The only one that isn't is mechanism (5 stars in 2018, 3 now). Why do you think it has scored differently now vs then? Was this a great mechanism compared to 2018 locos? Or is today's rating just reflecting the current market in 2022? :)

Hey sam, what a stunning loco! The level of detail is outstanding! However, I may ask for some advice; one of my drive rods (I think that's the name of the one that connects the drive wheels to the piston motion) has bent so it is now curved upwards. Do you reckon it will be able to be fixed or do I need to go shopping for a new part? It was caused by a screw on the connection rods being loose and it caught the drive rod, so I may send that one back to hornby as I had only run it once before :/

Interesting addition to the D11's history: Prior to their design, Robinson had been tasked with designing a larger express loco to replace the capable but long in the tooth Class 2 4-4-0's. The results were the Class 8B 4-4-2 Atlantics and the Class 8F 4-6-0's. In both cases though, the results were disappointing; far from exceeding the performance of the locos they were meant to replace, but the 8B and 8F struggled just to match their target, with the Atlantics in particular suffering from poor steaming due to their undersized, narrow firebox. In the end, Robinson had to go back to the drawing board and came up with the 11F, a new 4-4-0 that could run rings around the bigger engines. Enter the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. When coming up with characters for his new series of train-based children's stories, Awdry delved deep into his collected knowledge as a trainspotter and rail enthusiast. When forming his vision for the loco fleet of the North Western Railway, he settled on one of the engines being a green 4-4-2 who was notorious for being sickly and weak because he couldn't steam properly due to a small firebox. Sound familiar? It's unclear if Henry was initially meant to be a Robinson 8B specifically or simply a similar loco based on them, but either way the characteristics line up. "But wait a minute," I hear you type, "Henry was never an Atlantic. None of the books depicted him as that. He was always shown as either a 4-6-0 or a 4-6-2, depending on the illustrator." Well, yes, you're right. But note, that was how the *illustrators* depicted Henry, not the Rev. Awdry; in his earliest notes and sketches, Henry is shown to be an Atlantic. But when the stories were first published for public release in 1945, the illustrator the publisher hired, William Middleton, made a mistake and drew Henry as a 4-6-2 Pacific. Unhappy with this error, Awdry declined to ask Middleton to return for subsequent books and the illustrator job was taken up by Reginald Payne. However, Payne made the same mistake, having used Middleton's illustrations as a basis. Things really heated up with the next illustrator, C. Reginald Dalby, who Awdry already disliked for taking a more cartoonish and less realistic approach than Payne, but Henry was a particular sticking point as Dalby's depiction looked almost identical to Gordon, the only real distinguishing feature being Henry having square buffers and a GWR-style brass chimney cap. Awdry was reportedly furious with Dalby's work, especially with Henry not being depicted as an Atlantic for a third time, instead becoming a visual copy of Gordon. It was supposedly around this time that Awdry devised the backstory that many Thomas fans are familiar with; that Henry was a failed prototype design by Sir Nigel Gresley who had tried to stretch a GNR C2 Atlantic design into a Pacific, with some shady businessmen stealing the blueprints from Doncaster Works and selling them to Sir Topham Hatt who was desperate for locomotives at the time. Awdry was also dissatisfied with Henry's character at the time, initially having never intended to let him out of the tunnel he was bricked up in in his very first story, with only the pleas of his publisher and his son Christopher letting Henry out. So Awdry then planned to kill off Henry in the Flying Kipper wreck, only to again be begged not to. Relenting again, Awdry did make one change: Since he was stuck with Dalby for the time being, he took the opportunity to redesign Henry along the lines of an actual well-known prototype, an LMS Black 5, thus giving Dalby no excuses for drawing him wrong. And that is more or less how Henry has remained. So that's the connection between the D11 and Henry the Green Engine: A 4-4-0 built to replace the 4-4-2 and 4-6-0 that failed to live up to expectations, and the 4-4-2 serving as inspiration for the most famous green Black 5 in Britain, who became a Black 5 because nobody would draw him as an Atlantic. P.S. As for the GCR Class 2 4-4-0 that all of these locos were meant to replace, a project is underway at the Great Central (Heritage) Railway to build a new member of the class, No. 567. Though broadly the original design is being maintained and some vintage parts being utilized, including an existing boiler, cylinder block, and tender chassis, modifications are being made to suit current engineering standards, such as widespread application of water jet fabrication, the lead bogie wheels being identical to that of the Bluebell Railway's "Brighton Atlantic" project, and modifications to the front end frames to better withstand rough shunts.

Dear Sam: My architect friend has analysed both your and my attraction and addiction to the 4-4-0 format and concluded that this is due to a phenomena known as ‘on the human scale.’ Apparently this extends to buildings and why we are attracted to certain proportions and sizes of architecture. We do not feel threatened by the scale of these constructions and get a cuddly warm sensation from their pleasing dimensions. There is no cure for this condition; extremes are that eventually you will be ‘held in awe’ by the sight of an LMS Stanier pacific. You may also tend to have a motherly attitude in the presence of ‘Jintys’ GWR pannier tanks and SR Terriers. Hence the appeal of Thomas The Tank Engine to children.

Such a beautiful train! Got a question, and if you’ve said before I’m sorry I’ve missed it. But why do you put a cow on some of the trucks on some reviews? Is there a reason or to make us smile (which it does 😀)?

Yeah you did review the hornby horse box wagon, however did you see that Hattons has the Helijan BOC tank wagon in their bargains , it’s looks unusual and very interesting

Hey Sam I had the 0-6-0 blown out diagram and it had an old late 80s early 90s coupling intsad of a nuckel coupling and lots of box art are like this like the fighter 8 with risers f7 has their old coupling

Such a shame that so many 4-4-0s were scrapped. These would have been the ideal locos for our preserved lines!

Hi Sam, how often do you service a locomotive, is it after a certain number of running hours or just when it fails to run properly, and In between services do you apply any oil to moving parts Regards Greg
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg - I tend to do mine every year, but that's mainly to ensure they're always in top order for videos... you could well need to do them much less often than that, or much more if you run them frequently! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Just a suggestion, but with these pre-grouping loco reviews, can you suggest suitable coaches, if available?
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 2 жыл бұрын
Good idea Phillip! Unfortunately there's not much for these locos, that is GCR coaches. The Hatton's Genesis range will include some GCR, but I imagine this loco would have had larger coaches than those from 1919... though they may still be your best option! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Off-topic: @Sam’sTrains Have you heard/aware of the CIE A Class/ 001 Class from Irish Railway Models (IRM)? I think that you should have reviewed it before. It is a superb model overall, according to many reviewers, with many cool features, and it is a historically important loco in Irish Rails.

ps I did spot a GNR atlantic in LNER green and nice it looks, mine is in dirty BR early black and I did have a motor pack up but I like this C1 loco, father did not very much as he thought they were rough, had small cabs and an odd regulator

You can read all the details on the printed Builder's plate. I can't make out the name of the works, but it was built in the GCR's manchester works in 1922 from what I can see in the video! The livery is Super!

It was Gorton, now the site of a vegetable market had a 14 section erecting shop and a huge engine shed with a coal elevator - great view from the top, also a birdcage walk right across the yard which I recall walking across counting 200 laid up locos (about 1963)
