Another great Burt Bacharach & Hal David song! Seems like this was on the radio almost every time I went for a drive throughout the warm summer of 1968 in Southern California. Interesting that a song featuring trumpeter Herb Alpert's vocal turned out to be one of his very best. Thanks, Harri. Great memories!

Yes, Alpert sang this. 1968. Some of the trumpet might be overdubbed. He performed the song on a television special and got such a great response afterward that he decided to release it as a single. It soon went to number one on the charts. Herb Alpert co-founded A&M records in 1962. A&M housed Joe Cocker, The Carpenters, Janet Jackson, Cat Stevens, Peter Frampton, Carole King, Styx, Supertramp, and The Police among other acts. Alpert sold A&M to PolyGram in 1987 for a reported $500 million.

LOL, the ONE song where Herb actually sings! He’s got a great catalog of hits, no doubt you’ve heard many of them without realizing it. He’s still putting out music too. His album cover for “Whipped Cream and Other Delights” was the thing that dreams were made of for me as a young boy.

When I heard him Play "Tangerine" on that album, it pricked up my ears...as a kid...such beautiful tone and mood you'd swear it was being sung by a pretty girl. He was so much more than just Tijuana Taxi. He played so many different styles on those albums and fooled the people thinking "Tijuana Brass, Mexican music, yahoo" all the time. lol

I'm going to see him [and his wife Lani] on my vacation to Tuscon AZ in January at the Tucson Jazz Festival. He's very old!! Gotta admire him going out and still performing, with help. I hope I can meet him in person and thank him for sparking my interest in Trumpet when I joined the school band. I became a music teacher and played trumpet until 10 years ago when I had enough lol. The man is a legend for several reasons. He discovered a lot of talent for his A & M record label, [formed in the early 1960's], including the Carpenters. His partners and producers etc tried to talk him out of the Carpenters. He saw something in them that they had deaf ears to. How dumb. He was right, they were wrong. Good thing he was boss. Lani, his wife, sang for one of those groups he discovered, Brazil 66, who made millions with their records as well. ths famous Burt Bacharach and Hal David [lyricists] wrote the song and many others on Herb's A & M label.

As a British child of the '60s I was aware of his 2 big hits here, this one and 'Spanish Flea' but knew nothing more about him. Caught a documentary about him on TV about 10 years ago and was quite shocked to learn just what a musical phenomenon and household name he was in the States; seems almost everyone had Tijuana Brass LPs there! Interesting, super-talented, hard-working and seemingly all-round nice guy! Really please that programme directed me to discover more of his music - I love the Tijuana Brass sound! As documented in an A&E Biography episode featuring Bacharach, the recording originated when Alpert, while visiting at Bacharach's office, asked, "Say, Burt, do you happen to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal never recorded; maybe one I might be able to use?" Alpert said he made it his practice to ask songwriters that particular question: often a "lost pearl" was revealed. As it happened, Bacharach recalled one, found the lyrics and score sheet in his office filing cabinet, and offered it to Alpert: "Here, Herb ... you might like this one."[citation needed] Alpert saw the possibilities in the composition for recording it himself. The composition had a recognizable Bacharach-David feel, a spot for a signature horn solo in the bridge and in the fadeout, and it was an easy song to sing within Alpert's vocal range. Alpert originally sang "This Guy's in Love with You" on a 1968 television special, The Beat of the Brass. In response to numerous viewer telephone calls to the network following the broadcast, Alpert decided that the song should be released as a single recording, and it reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in June of that year, remaining in the top position for four weeks. It was not only Alpert's first No. 1 single, but it was also the first No. 1 single for his A&M record label, as well as the first No. 1 in the U.S. for Bacharach & David. The song also spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart. For the single's B-side, Alpert chose "A Quiet Tear" from his first album in 1962, The Lonely Bull.

It is indeed herb singing this song Harri, and playing the trumpet as well in the middle of the song and at the end thanks to the magic of multi-tracking. Herb sang the song for a special in 1968 called the beat of the brass and immediately the phone started ringing so they released it as a single and it spent two months at number 1 from April to June of 1968. The tune was written by the team of Bacharach and David and the piano intro and licks are played by Pete Jolly.

His Harri - great choice! I've got a couple of his records. One of them has this as the title track, and on the other side he sings a song called Without her. It's not bad, but not in the same league as this Bacharach number. I've also got the Herb Alpert Christmas album, and he sings a couple on there. The Christmas Song ( Chestnuts roasting by an open fire....) and another called The bell that couldn't jingle. I've also got a cd, but I can't remember the tracks on it and which ones he sings on. He did sing, and play trumpet, and had a band, that's why his stuff sounds so consistently good. He knew what he was doing. Thanks for the posting!

His album “A Taste of Honey” was the first album of his I bought, and it’s very very nice! Just terrific music, and considering he was competing at the time with the British Invasion, as it’s called, he stood his ground with the best of the best, as it turned out! Great music just IS, and stands alone. Back in the day, music shows usually had an opening act, a pre-band before the main event. Several times I went to shows that after the first band played the crowd only wanted to hear more of the pre-band and to hell with the reason you bought the ticket to begin with. Example, the brand new band, at the time, opening for the Edgar Winter Group was another British master, BAD COMPANY. After hearing them in this debut tour, all we wanted was to hear more of them. Winters band did take the stage, and it took a bit of time, but we warmed up to his musical genius as well. Another was when, at my first concert after high school...Rare Earth was the headliner band, the lights dimmed in the coliseum, and the announcer said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, from the great state of Texas, welcome, ZZ Top...oh my God! From their first note you could tell these guys were something special! Rare Earth was great as well, but there wasn’t always enough time between acts to process what was just heard and experienced.
