Spent 10 days on Lake Powell 30 some years ago in mid Oct. , with a lady friend and her dog. Rented a skiff with a out board motor . From the Hyite Marina then went south. Not sole on the lake . The best part was there was a lot more water. Sad to see the condition now. Camping out at night one would be awaken by the noise a fish made when they jumped out of the water , the sound of a raven flying by. That’s quiet ……!!!! Slept in a kiva at defiance house ruin . Had a birthday in a old ruin . Must admit I had a pretty good buzz on that night. Reed the book desert solitaire, written by. A park ranger who journeyed down the Colorado river through Glen Canyon, one of the last before it was flooded.

Lake Powell is a really nice paddle. I did an 80 mile paddle from Bull Frog to the Escalante River and back in July 2018. I've heard some people say they hate it because of the boats and how they pollute the water, but I didn't think much of it. The water is fantastic and feels great. Really cool place to explore. I definitely recommend it.

Great thing about Powell, is that is is SO huge you can find solitude easily even in summer. Though it is hot and exposed, shoulder seasons best.

The greatest kayaking is south of the dam on the Colorado River. There is a shuttle that takes you down to the river via a tunnel that was carved when the dam was built. The water is calm and the canyon is anywhere from 700' to over 1,000'. There are numerous places to camp and fish. You should take out at Lees Ferry because the water gets rough beyond this point. There are also shuttles that can return you to the dam. The shuttles are provided by the rafting companies that float this section of the river. You will not regret this trip. The views are stunning!!!

I also like to paddle a kayak, however the most fun is crashing through waves. Keeping yourself from flipping over and charging another wave. I don't know. Flat lakes and rivers or ok, but I like it when the wind picks up. If I'm driving by my local lake and I see big white caps, I head back to the house to pick up the kayak.

Beautiful! I'm surprised there was no one else there. Crowds or not, I'd definitely go in the summer so I could get in that water! I'd just make this a day trip and skip the camping. Something to think about, though, is if there is plenty of motorboat action in the summer, boat wake could become problematic for paddlers.
@livinglike_lisa79546 жыл бұрын
You can offset your paddles so that they don’t get caught in the wind. You may want to consider a skirt for your kayak for the colder weather. Can’t believe that you can just go camp on a lake like that. Can’t really do that here in NH much. Cool adventure! I love kayaking!
@SUVRVing6 жыл бұрын
It wasn't the wind on the paddles that was giving me problems; it was the wind on my body and on the kayak, and the wind making waves. No fun. But yeah, you can do this kind of thing at thousands of lakes out in this part of the country. It's great :)
@martinjcamp6 жыл бұрын
Amen on "offsetting". Many experienced yakkers orient each paddle at 90 degrees. Body or Paddle, it all adds up to extra effort and slower going because of wind-drag. Also, the fact that you are actually moving the out-of-water paddle INTO the wind eats up energy as well. Ask others that know about this. Great Videos!

I always look forward to one of your videos. Utah would be my number one destination when heading out West. There is an unbelievable amount of beauty packed into that state. It's hard to say what I enjoyed the most about any of your videos, but one of the things that stands out to me is that ordinarily the editing is great, I'm able to hear what you are saying, and everything falls into place without being just a bunch of random clips. I love that you go to the trouble of showing what you are going to be doing, then you do it, and then you tell us what you did. You might consider buying float bags for your kayak, they're bags you blow up and insert in the bow and stern of your kayak so in case you get swamped there isn't as much room for water so it easier to get to shore.

You should practice feathering your paddle. It will enable you to paddle into the wind a bit more efficiently. When you feather your paddle it offsets the blades so when one blade is in the water the other cuts through the wind rather than pushing into it and therefore is much easier to paddle into headwinds. Just an idea.

I'm really enjoying these videos. It's been three years since I was last in Utah--too long. Your paddle stroke is shoulders only. A good paddling stroke is from your core muscles. Find a good coach. You mentioned wind. That's why you need a better stroke. Should you get a 15 knot headwind, you aren't going anywhere unless you have a good stroke. What happens is the wind picks up and you realize your plans just changed, you have to get back, or get to-- ASAP. That's when you need the power of a good stroke. I was at Lake Powell 15 years ago, rented a powerboat. Went up the river to the Escalante River to visit Cathedral in the Desert. Beautiful. The water level is down quite a bit. Still is. Cold weather paddling is a good thing. You're always supposed to dress for the water temp, not the air. (Friend died of hypothermia on a warm summer day warm ocean water. Loose wet suit). A good wet suit, booties, mittens, layers underneath water temp not a problem.

I've been working my way thru watching all your videos. I wondered when i'd get to see you paddle the kayak. I paddle/camp a 17 foot sea kayak for weeks at a time and plan to spend a month on lake powell. I'd likely start at page and paddle up one side of the lake exploring many of the side canyons and then back down the opposite side doing the same thing. Since your a hiker and suv camper you already have most of the gear and experience packing light for kayak camping. Good on you for wearing a pfd ! Please be careful thou, a very light boat like that will float away from you quicker than you can swim back to it if you capsize, and even water temps of 50 degrees can get you hypothermia in very little time. Thanks so much for posting great informative and educational videos Tristan ! Love that you are posting the gps co ordinates and date filmed, very helpful. Epic adventure. That water was so beautiful & clear. So I'm thinking you could have tucked in behind a rock face to escape the wind? What about that first slot canyon? Could you have camped there where you couldn't go any further in your kayak? That would have been awesome. When you are places like this without cell signal, have you notified anyone of your location? My wife makes me (requests very hard) use my SPOT locator to send her a message and map location.
@SUVRVing6 жыл бұрын
Looking back with hindsight, yes, I'm sure there were other places I could have camped that would have been more out of the wind, but it really wasn't all that windy until an hour or two before bedtime. Before that the wind was manageable. But I agree, it would have been great to camp right in the back of that first slot canyon. I give people back home an itinerary of my trip, and I try to check in from time to time when I do have a cell signal. Amazingly, I actually did have reception when I was on top of the little rock knoll above my campsite. But yes, I am looking into getting a SPOT locator or something similar in the future.
@myadventureoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I use the older SPOT that sends a pre-made message and gives a map location. Costs around $150 a year. They recently came out with a new SPOT that offers 2-way texting.

I've never had an inflatable rubber kayak. The inflatable boats I have are ones that I made out of thin nylon material. They're very lightweight and compact. And the fact that the inflatable rubber ones take up a ton of space is exactly why I ended up getting a plastic one. I figured I could keep it up on top of the car and out of the way. Works great.

I would have to have a tent because of the snake issues

This was an exploration of Bullfrog Bay correct?

At 20:00 I don' know why you didn't camp with a fire in a more enclosed area away from the elements

I don't like making campfires

I remember when you started videoing the kayak since transitioning out of the inflatable. In comparison, I can see you love it *and* see why. Way better investment.

They're for different things entirely. The inflatable raft is for throwing in the backback and taking to lakes that are too far away to carry the kayak too. Both it and the kayak are great for what they do, and I use both of them.

How's the ventilation/condensation situation in your bivy? I've always wanted to do a multiday kayak trip on Powell.

What date did you do this kayak trip? I live in Phoenix and my understanding is that Lake Powell is very hot in July when this was published. Thanks for the info. Love your channel.

Hi Deanna. This was in late March. Thanks for watching.

That makes more sense. I'm planning on passing through there next Spring on my way to Zion, so this is good to know.

What a life. Are there any fish? Looks pretty salty, the water lines.
@SUVRVing6 жыл бұрын
Hi Nancy. It's a freshwater lake, and there are plenty of fish.

Hi Tristian. Do you have advice on best road trip planner? I’m in northern Wisconsin heading to cliff dwellings and Chaco in NM. Any help would much appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by road trip planner?
@melaniecribbs48022 жыл бұрын
@@SUVRVing no worries I did some overlay maps and got what I wanted. Thanks for all your videos! They keep me excited to get out there whenever it’s -40 outside.

What part of the year did you go on this trip to lake powell for this footage? or is it footage from multiple visits?

You know, you give a bunch of detailed information, which is awesome! However, you speak of temps....I'm damned if you ever mention exact time of year? Also, any number of boats make this possible but, for example, the Native Watercraft Slayer XC...you could remove the electronics pod, install the scupper block-off plate, pop the seat out and strap it down on front of the hull, and I swear you have an awesome even sleeping platform...leave it anchored but floating! You have protection from critters, no rocks in your ribs, and no unscrupulous folks making-off with your floater! 500 pound capacity, so you can take more than those oats for dinner. I made a domed canopy that locks down in the gear tracks...blocks wind, snow, rain...

With my current kayak, just regular ol' camping is the simplest and easiest solution. And this was filmed in late March.

Cool...getting ready to head there November 1st for a couple weeks kayak camping.

Wind? Yeah, the terrain is so open and treeless that the wind carries to most places. I've been sandblasted there on at least one trip.

Don't know why you don't catch fresh fish and grill them when camping as walleye or perch are great eating.

I don't eat fish

I wondered if you had wet shoes in the kayak. I guess there's no way to keep your feet dry getting in and out. Or were you not wearing shoes even in the chilly temps?
@SUVRVing6 жыл бұрын
Usually I wear sandals when I'm kayaking, but I forgot them on this trip, so I just went barefoot. Once I was established at camp, I put my regular hiking shoes on to wander around and explore a bit on land. Thanks Kathryn.

SUV RVing I'm going to miss when your channel takes off and you're too busy for these little convos, but I'm rooting for you. I was just listening to Van City Vanlife's livestream and he chatted a bit about patreon while answering questions. Makes sense. If you decide to do it yours will be the first one I'll contribute to.
