In this week's video I explore the rich, fascinating history of provençal fabrics. These colourful, summery prints immediately evoke the lifestyle and food of the South of France, but where do the designs come from, and how were they made? I go to find the answers in the museum and archive of the SOULEIADO company, which was has been making these stunning fabrics since 1806, and whose clothes I've adored all my life!

Mummy is absolutely amazing. Even though separated from Percy, I think all the work in the garden has made her very agile, happy, productive, and satisfied with the accomplishments being achieved at Lalande. We love her!

Right. After than fabulous inspirational video I am now going to find the 2 antique Indian wood blocks that have been kicking around on a dusty shelf for years. I found them in a charity shop for £2 each. Armed with a white vintage cotton sheet (also thrifted) I will have some fun tomorrow printing fabric while the rain pours outside. That’s Tuesday sorted. @@lolodee3528 Unfortunately there is a darker history attached to this. After the invention of the textile print machines, the British deliberately killed off the hand painted/printed chintz industry in India. It had widespread effects because everybody in Asia wanted Indian hand painted chintzes.

In my first country house in Normandy called ' Le Chateau' I used these fabrics in the kitchen back in the 80's, it was really pretty and complemented the patchwork of blue and white tiles over the Cornue cooker. In later years I worked with the daughter of the Demery family who is a fashion designer, her parents had sold the company. In St Remy de Provence there is a gorgeous chateau also belonging to the company I think, an incredible estate in the town. I also lived in Nimes where similar fabrics were used in the gauchos shirts and ladies headscarves. Thank you for another wonderful video. xoxoxo

Amazing that there was a photo of Princess Diana with her provencal handbag was on show. I thought at the time, it was so wonderful, and SO frustrated that I couldn't buy one. But when I visited a souvenir shop it Nice, I bought two quilted table mats, and two table napkins in exactly the same material, and made them into a handbag. It looks identical, and I still have it. Where there is a will there is a way! What I now crave is a dress like your yellow sprigged with red flowers!!!

Fascinating! I think I must watch this one over again at least one more time. Really, this episode rivals the cultural shows on television. When I first discovered your channel, pre-lockdown, I almost left it because I wasn't interested in watching partying and revelry with rich strangers. But since lockdown, the channel has developed a family feel, and rather than endless parties, you show gardening and DIY projects, and now these wonderful cultural episodes. The art history major in me loves those. I look forward to each episode, and to catching up with the familiar faces--and animals, which make such a wonderful ensemble working and playing together.

You and your mother are a great team in these regional vlogs. Makes me happy to watch your firsthand interviews with people who are keeping regional traditions and crafts alive. I knew that Louis XIV was all about the French silk trade but wasn’t aware of his war on cotton trades. The Matelasse’ coverlets were also quite beautiful. Maybe in a few years or sooner you will be able to use some of these on your beautifully restored beds. You should offer small regional tour groups that begin and end at your Chateau. I think it will be the next reincarnation f travel. France has such a rich history. You are a great example of someone actualizing their vision for their life. I made a quilt, and the pattern was called "trip round the world" It was tied through the the three layers and we still use it. With all your beautiful fabrics, you could make a fantastic quilt. Stephanie! This is one of your finest videos. I absolutely loved it as it brought memories back to me of the days when we had the lovely Pierre Deux shops in the US. Pierre Deux had very similar fabrics in table cloths, handbags and beautiful French country furniture. I even have beautiful yellow plates from their line of household decor…it was a wonderful shop.
