In Duke basketball program history, they’ve had 26 1 and done players and until the 2021 NBA Draft and DJ Steward, they’ve never had one go undrafted before today’s feature Trevon Duval did it in 2018, making him the first for coach K. The reason this fact is so astounding is because Duke university has built such a program that made them fortunate to add the best high school players to their roster every year. When Duke recruits you to be their next pillar, it’s almost certain you’ll have a future in the NBA, or at least a great shot at it 1 because of their name and 2 because you’re probably really good, the most ready and ranked really high. This is why it was a shock Trevon Duval didn’t hear his named called not 1 time of the 60 picks that went by in 2018. Leaving high school he was the #1 rated point guard by rivals in front of Collin Sexton, and #2 by 247 behind again Collin Sexton. Although the two battled back and forth for the #1 spot, Duval seemed the most prototypical for the NBA in that he was 6’3, long arms, athletic vs Sexton at 6’1 and a tweener shooting guard trapped in a point guard’s body. But Trevon in my opinion made these mistakes and cost him to be stuck in the G League. The First UNDRAFTED One And Done Player In Duke History TREVON DUVAL Stunted Growth

Collin Sexton dang near brought a 15 point led back with 2 players, 3 vs 5. Trevon doesn't have it in him to that. A lot of great basketball players are missing heart. It's easy to dunk on trash teams in high school, but in college everyone is good. I've seen Trevon and Collin play in person and the difference is that Collin plays with heart and hardwork and is willing and able to take over a game, BY HIMSELF, while Trevon relies too much on his talents of being athletic without covering for weaknesses. It's tragic but hardwork beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

The 2017-18 Duke team was an in and out shot away from the Final Four that year. They had a great starting 5, but no real depth. if you have that amount of physical talent and the Duke coaching staff to develop it! and you somehow squander it, it's 100% on you not wanting to put in the work and improve yourself. his heart wasnt in it. thats why he took the easy way out. he thought he was going to get picked in the 1st round and get that $. he didnt want to have to get better. even if he averaged 20pts and 8ast and was a lottery pick he still would have been a bust bc he didnt have mental toughness to work through struggles. if coach K, who has seen DECADES of players, tells you you're not ready and you go against that knowledge base you dont deserve to make it.

If Coach K tell you as a player you're not ready to go to the NBA yet choosing to go against his wishes is equivalent to not getting drafted for that very reason in itself. Coach K was already losing his cream of the crop and wanted at least one more year with TD before he was granted his opportunity to turn pro. I mean what did TD think was going to happen by going against Coach K's wishes. The game doesn't work like that on the narrow path of making it to the NBA. Coach K has direct access to every NBA team and after one simple conversation with each team Coach K told them the same thing he told TD and that he wasn't ready yet or he told the NBA teams not to draft him because he wanted to keep him for at least one more year. With that being the case TD wasn't drafted and it was really that simple. The crazy part is we are only talking about one more season which would of been life changing for TD but he simply couldn't see the light in the situation four years ago unfortunately so.😩😔

For the record, DUKE fans 100% support ALL our players & want them to succeed on & off the court! That said, while it is true that Duval may have perfected certain areas of his game early on it was his lack of confidence in his outside shot & not coming back for year 2 @ DUKE that cost him long term. It’s very misleading to suggest any elite guard who’s waited till college to develop his shot could ever be in a better position that going to DUKE…facts say otherwise regardless of how much talent is on the team. If anyone on that team can attest to that fact I t’s Gary Trent Jr coming into Duke as a decent shooter & became an elite sniper for DUKE that year. #FactsMatter, so just to be clear Trevon Duval actually DID SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE his jumper while he was at DUKE ….check out his final game vs KANSAS is proof where he was unfortunately one of the better shooters on the team that day! Duval school choice 🚫 the issue! Being the only star it would’ve made FLAWS bigger NOT smaller so another school 🚫change anything because he would’ve still not been confident with his jumper & been assessed the same. In fact, there are many more examples of former Duke recruits who naively bought into opinions like yours going on to play for another school & they never got drafted. So the reality that still exists is that the only person to blame in the TD scenario is the young man who’s hype surpassed his ability so his humility prevented him from listening to Coach’s & draft experts to return to DUKE for yr.2 which 100% he would’ve had a dominant year possibly making a run for another Final 4. To support my take, guys like Tre Jones, Quinn Cook are proof that listening to Coaches & experts will always prove more beneficial than listening to peers telling you what you want to hear! 💯Tell it like it is so this doesn’t continue to happen 🔄

dude refused to retool his game and this is the result. it’s not dukes fault he didn’t want to impact the game in different areas other than being the lead guy. dennis smith jr damn near quit basketball but he adapted and is now a decent shooter on low volume and is a very good defender. duval has had time to do the same, but hasn’t. not to mention the jabs he’s taken at duke despite being the same player he was when he left, he’s still got time to change

Does him going to Duke really make a difference as to why he did not pan out as a pro? It’s not like Duke caused him to have a bad jump shot or broke him as a player in his one year. If he went to another school and stayed longer, the NBA would have eventually discovered his game doesn’t translate. If he was “held back” by Duke, he would have elevated himself from the G League by now.

The thing about the NBA is you better be ready to produce and carve out a role to help a team or your going to have a short career even if your drafted. Many of these young kids have been told they were great while they were growing up to a point they believe that they dont need to work hard on their game anymore and feel they are already NBA superstar talents......they never develope a good work ethic because they have listened to all the hype in high school they got....and I feel that is what has happened to this guy. He thought he could get by just on athletic ability alone like in high school and never put in the work to make his game a total game.

2018 was the first year of paying some attention to the draft. I was flabbergasted on how he wasn’t picked at 2nd round and was surprised a guy like Jerome Robinson got drafted higher. It be sick if Duvall becomes like a late bloomer type situation.

Should’ve stayed another year. Would’ve been a leader on that Zion team and won a ship. Then would’ve been drafted high for sure

Seton Hall would’ve been perfect because it’s he’s very familiar with the area, and they would’ve played through him all the way down to the playbook.. Duke is heavily reliant on their system and how they play.

They've now had multiple 5 Stars at dOoK who've gone undrafted. Everyone remembers the sure fire stars like Tatum and Zion. But forget the myriad of Top 25 kids who went there and either turned into busts, went deep in the 2nd round or were undrafted. A lot of 1st Round flops too.

Didn't show that he could run a team, plus his lack of a jump shot really hurt Duval. Hard to make it in today's NBA if you can't shoot as an undersized PG. Also probably didn't help that he took shots at the Duke program on the way out.

Duke was a terrible fit for him. Didn't let him play his game at all and there were too many other guys on that team that dominated the ball. Alotta plays he was being reduced to a spot up shooter.

I feel like when Bagley came to Duke, he became fifth option on a stacked team. Also when I saw him when theybplayed Wake Forest he got benched in the second half after going 0 for 8 (aproximate) in the game.

The biggest reason he didn’t make it is because he is a point guard who can’t run a team. Not being able to shoot and poor defense was just icing on the cake. With that squad he should have averaged double digit assists. But when your only tool is a hammer ever problem looks like a nail.
